CB Sam Beal, on injured reserve, has been designated for return by the Giants and will begin practicing today. The earliest he can play is the Week 9 game vs. the Cowboys.
Great news

Have to see what we have in him for the rest of this season. See if he is a piece of this defense moving forward.
I did not know the second part

that he's still not eligible to play for a few weeks.

Better than nothing but that's kind of a buzz kill.

No, there are 17 weeks in the NFL season including the bye week. Beal is eligible to return week 9. So he will actually be active for 9 weeks but will play in 8.
If he looks good in practice

He's already a full participant in practice. Barring another injury he will definitely play week 9.

pre-supposes it ever WAS on the field. This guy has been on the team for what, a year and a half?, and has left no mark whatsoever. Hope things change but I'm not putting much hope in a total cypher.
Good, we can use more CB depth...
BC Eagles94 : 10/16/2019 11:41 am : link
and it is time to see what this guy has got. Teams are allowed to bring two guys back from IR now. Any idea who is being planned for the 2nd one? Kareem Martin? Russell Shepherd? Any of the other guys on IR worth a damn are either out for the year (Ryan Connelly) or not eligible as they weren't on initial 53 man (Corey Coleman- out for year anyway).
We are passed the he has to 'prove he can stay on the field' stage
90.Cal : 10/16/2019 11:47 am : link
He can't.

Zero patience for a guy who hasn't been able to participate in a single padded practice... a year and a half after being drafted... not 1 padded practice with the Giants under Beal's belt... he better make plays as soon as he hits the field or I'm all the way done on hoping/believing Beal will ever do any good for us.
Maybe now we can work on finding out

Seems like it is saying he cant play vs Dallas.

Tom Rock

@TomRock_Newsday
Here is why the Giants didn't have Beal practice on Monday: It would have started a 21-day window that would have ended on Nov. 4. The Giants play the Cowboys on Nov. 4. So two days basically bought the Giants another week.
Lots of people ignoring the fact he probably would have been ready

IIRC he must be activated in a 21 day time frame. So they have a choice between Dallas or following week.

If he gets hurt again before he is eligible to play (vs dallas I think) then definitely cut him on the spot!!!

If he plays and sucks really bad then yes cut him at the season end...

He has alot to prove and he doesnt have another 18 months to do it

is kind of silly. before we classify him as a bust at least let's see what he can do in actual practices and games. No one knows if we have a good player or a bust at this point. Anything he gives us at this point this season is gravy. the guy has been hurt, let's see him when healthy and root for the guy to be great instead of killing him before he does anything.

Played in only 9 games his rookie season and then missed a game each his 2nd and 3rd seasons before playing in all 16 games for 8 straight seasons.

Simms didn't play a full 16 until his 5th season in the league.
Baker, Ballantine and Beal will do us just fine in the near future

The best part of his current injury

It's
AcidTest : 10/16/2019 2:54 pm : link
too early to give up on Beal, but I nonetheless understand why people don't expect much from him. He hasn't played football in two years, and has never taken a snap in an NFL game. I'd just like to see some progress this season, since it's unlikely Jenkins will be back next year.
RE: If he looks good in practice
Rong5611 : 10/16/2019 3:14 pm : link
Maybe, we'll see by late October. If they don't have any meaningful games by then because of losses to the Cards and Lions, maybe you move him.

But, I'm not sure I'd be quick to get rid of him. JJ is our only experienced CB. Beal hasn't even practiced with pads with the Giants yet. Ballentine hasn't taken a snap at CB yet. Baker is starting to not look lost out there.

Point is - You don't want to play the kids and have them get shell shocked. I'm thinking you want to ease them in and have them learn. Having JJ out there helps stabilize things, at least he's been there before.

It might make better sense to take him off the books after the season.

That said, I don't see him returning after this season. They will save cap space for next year.

Corey Webster
Samiam : 10/16/2019 3:40 pm : link
How long did it take Corey Webster to get good? Why are people so quick to talk about cutting a 3rd pick who by all accounts is one of the better athletes in the secondary? Pretty sure he had an issue with his shoulder before he was drafted which, if true, is why he lasted until the 3rd round. Then he pulls a hamstring; not uncommon for a DB. If he was ready to play by week 3 as Zeke's Alibi mentioned above, then I question why he was placed on IR to begin with. Its not like this roster is so overflowing with talent that an injured player couldnt be inactive for weeks 1 and 2. Nevertheless, I don't get how people are talking about getting rid of me so quickly if he doesnt show ability right away.
...
christian : 10/16/2019 3:43 pm : link
There's no silver lining when a guy misses 1.5 years. He's not practicing, he's not learning in a real live scenario, and he's not contributing.

Beal hasn't seen a single real snap since what, a MAAC game in the winter of 2017?

Giants#1, Donít you know that reasonable takes on issues regarding the Giants are not well taken on BBI.

We much prefer the shooting from the hip emotional banter we are familiar with.

Never understood the urge of some fans
gmen9892 : 10/16/2019 4:30 pm : link
To just dump a talented player for nothing because he has had some bad injury luck to start off his career. It's almost as if he would have been better being healthy to start this year and not playing like Corey Ballentine. The guy clearly has something the Giants brass liked, which is why they went out and drafted him with that 3rd round pick.

Let's see if the guy can make it on the field this year and then talk about cutting him for nothing at the end of the year if he doesn't play.

I wouldn't say fully healthy, but our outside corner depth is good, and I'm sure he could have went. Roster spots are important. He pulled his hamstring second week of August. You are looking at a two month injury max for most severe pull.
If he looks confused in practice, he should fit right in.

I'm not sure how your lack of patience has any bearing on Beal or the conversation at hand.
