NFT: I keep having this recurring dream

cjac : 10/16/2019 11:27 am
Let me start by saying i've been having this dream on and off for over 20 years. And i cant figure out why.

There are many different versions of it, but all the same theme. I'm in college and i forget about, or don't have all of the information, about one of my classes. I cant find where it is and I forgot to drop it, and now its the end of the semester and its too late.

I had the dream again last night and in this version I didnt go to any of my classes for the entire semester and now its finals week. I dont even know where they are located.

Anyone else have this dream?
Yes
threeofakind33 : 10/16/2019 11:30 am : link
I have been having a very similar dream for the last fifteen years.
Pretty common dream...
BamaBlue : 10/16/2019 11:36 am : link
for educated people who have busy lives and juggling different activities. It's an outgrowth of a perfectly normal insecurity with not being able to complete all of the important activities...
Have been having the same dream...
BC Eagles94 : 10/16/2019 11:37 am : link
for as long as I can remember! It is apparently a common type of dream.
I have a very similar dream
widmerseyebrow : 10/16/2019 11:39 am : link
The semester is almost over and I realize I have completely forgotten to attend one of my classes. I have a horrible realization that I must cram a semester's worth of material in a very short time to have any shot at passing the final (and the class). I am embarrassed to show up to that class after missing most of it and I usually wake up when I'm looking for it.

I always assume that I have this dream whenever I'm feeling overwhelmed and perhaps not acknowledging it consciously.
Holy shit

I have been having this same dream for over 20 years but it takes place in High School...
I've had that same dream a million times
bradshaw44 : 10/16/2019 11:44 am : link
And have had it recently now that you brought it up. Crazy that so many people have this dream.
Nope but here's one I do have
I Love Clams Casino : 10/16/2019 11:50 am : link
sold a house 10 years ago. I dream that my wife and I go back and the people who currently live there aren't home. We just go in the house and start hanging out and I am beyond paranoid the entire time that the people we sold to will come back while we are hanging out in there. Also I am acutely aware that the house we left is now completely different on the inside, yet still familiar. It's weird.

Almost weirder, I told my wife about it and she says she has the same dream
I consider this to be
ray in arlington : 10/16/2019 11:50 am : link
my most common dream. I wake up in the morning thinking, "there's the course I forgot about dream again".
I had it so often
BillT : 10/16/2019 11:52 am : link
I was able to recognize it as a dream while I was having it! Alleviated a lot of the tension it created and I have it far less.
You have a very boring subconscious.
x meadowlander : 10/16/2019 11:54 am : link
Doesn't take Feud to diagnose it's meaning, a common theme of insecurity.

I used to have nightmares of driving a truck downhill with no brakes.

Then I stopped driving trucks and the dream went away. :)
If you Google "most common recurring dreams"
RC in MD : 10/16/2019 11:55 am : link
the dream you described (or a variation of it) is one of the most common dreams.

I know that I've had that dream many many times. Same for a dream where I'm in the backseat of a moving car that I can't seem to control no matter how much I try.

Get this one all the time. Usually it's senior year in high school and I'm worried they're going to revoke my college acceptance if I fail.

some debt a few years back. Started having a recurring dream where my teeth would crumble and fall out. Paid off the debt and the dreams stopped.
Indeed...
rnargi : 10/16/2019 12:04 pm : link
it's one I have often. Particularly the part about forgetting to drop the class.

Another, driving...but never crashing...while taking a nap. Somehow the car stays on the road.

I had the Columbine dream for decades before it happened. I could not get myself to run in the dream. Haven't had that one in a while.
Yep

Regularly have some variation of this. Easily my most reoccurring dream.
Similar dream

Oh shit i have a similar version to that one too, but its college also. Or the one where i'm late for my tee time.
It's a common dream...
Metnut : 10/16/2019 12:23 pm : link
I have it occasionally too and it alternates between high school and college.
Hahaha. I'm not crazy.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 10/16/2019 12:26 pm : link
Usually mine is last minute final exam, but I didn't attend any classes all semester.
I have had several of these
pjcas18 : 10/16/2019 12:27 pm : link
recurring dreams, for me the college dream is I walk in to the final exam and realize I never went to class all semester or studied (and it's pretty much a true story).

I have the tooth loss dream often.

but the most common dream I have is one where I dream I, and in some variations of the dream, various friends of mine, murder someone.

In some cases the dream goes all the way to me being in prison, in other cases I just live with the guilt but have not been through a trial. Sometimes I know the person we killed, sometimes not.

the dreams seem so real and the feelings of remorse or dread do too.

In one case the dream seemed so real a few days after it I saw one of my co-conspirators and I asked him, this might seem like a weird question but did we kill Berube, roll his body up in a carpet and throw it in the Connecticut River?

and he just looked at me and quietly walked away.

not sure what that dream is all about.
Yep, have the same one...
Ryan : 10/16/2019 12:29 pm : link
...once in a while. Usually not all classes but just one that I completely forgot about or forgot to do homework, etc. Occasionally it used to pop up as being unprepared at work but the best part is this version almost always occurred Saturday AM so waking up from it and realizing that it wasn't real and I didn't even have to get up go to work was always awesome.

One recurring one I have a lot is being back playing either little league or HS football but either a.) my helmet is down over my eyes and I can't see anything or, b.) I can't run because it feels like I'm stuck in mud or my legs just won't move. The latter can actually be really painful as it's happening.
It's always me going back to high school
Eli2020 : 10/16/2019 12:38 pm : link
Or, even worse, a combo of high school-college where I interact with people who were assholes to me during that era in my life.

That, or constantly missing flights to NYC...then, if I do arrive, its a dark gloomy place of sorrow....

Also, when I was watching the Walking Dead while simultaneously getting ready to graduate college, I had all these zombie dreams.
Had similar college dreams for many years
Coach Red Beaulieu : 10/16/2019 12:49 pm : link
eventually went away. I attributed it to not attending graduation, namely a ceremony or ritual to commenmorate the ending of a significant part of life.
this thread has been enlightening!

Not only have I had cjac's dream recurring, but I've had the flying one too.

Like, I'll just be in the car or something, and out of nowhere, I'll just start flying, uncontrollably for a while.
it means you feel unprepared for something
GiantNatty : 10/16/2019 1:02 pm : link
very common dream.
I have the same type occasionally
giantsfaninphilly : 10/16/2019 1:15 pm : link
I'm back in college and I need one class to graduate. I also tell myself that I've graduated already, so at least that part of my conscious subconscious is working through dreaming.

I have no notes, I've never gone to the class and I don't even know what room it meets in.
I've had a similar dream (not dropping
Beezer : 10/16/2019 1:25 pm : link
the class but also not having a clue what's happening because I haven't been there). But not for a while.

Another one is where I'm able to jump from great heights and as long as I brace for impact, I'm able to land with no issue ... then re-launch myself to scale a very high wall, or whatever. I'm always disappointed when I wake up. lol
When I was young, I could actively control my dreams...
x meadowlander : 10/16/2019 1:35 pm : link
...could even wake myself by falling facefirst in the dream.

Now I rarely remember dreams.

I had one a few years back that freaked me out where my parents were in cahoots with a gang of cannibals that were going to cut me up and eat me.

There was one time that got a little scary where I tried falling to wake and it didn't work. Jumping off a bridge did the trick. :)
wow -so it's common
blueberry : 10/16/2019 1:43 pm : link
for over 20 years - realizing the finals are coming and I never went to class - how to cram? same dream
however I did go unprepared for finals once during 4 yrs of college and I attributed this nightmare to it

also I'm in a strange city and am going to be late for the flight home - how too get to the airport in time? another recurring one
.
arcarsenal : 10/16/2019 1:43 pm : link
I always have variations of that dream... it's usually that there's just some class I've been enrolled in but somehow just didn't attend for nearly an entire semester and then suddenly realize I have a final exam coming up or something. I've had it countless times. It's usually college.

I find that when I'm dozing off a lot of times, I'll start to recall places from old dreams. I.e... buildings, landscapes, etc. It's weird because in some cases, part of me isn't entirely sure if it's a place I've actually been or passed through at some point, or if it's just something I constructed in my sleep and was always just part of a dream.

I've also dreamt a bunch of times that I've sort of unknowingly or unintentionally committed some sort of crime... or do something where I don't think I'll get caught. Some of these have been incredibly realistic to the point where I've woken up and had to spend a couple of minutes making sure none of it actually happened.

In a lot of these dreams, I make a run for it and I wind up in all of these random neighborhoods... hopping fences, running through yards... I just run and run and run.

This stuff has always kinda fascinated me.
Is there ANYTHING better than waking...
x meadowlander : 10/16/2019 1:47 pm : link
...from a stone-cold, worst-ever nightmare? From sheer-horror to fist pumping YESSSSS! in 10 seconds.

A few times a year, my wife will wake to the sound of me screaming in my sleep. But it's not really screaming. The kids have heard it too and think it's hysterical - when I scream in my sleep, I sound like a special-needs deaf person yelling in a unknown foreign language.

:)

I've had this dream many times too. Sometimes I try to evade authorities, but most of the time it's the realization that I'm about to go to prison for a while and not knowing if I'll be able to handle it. I can never remember doing the crime in my dream, but I know I did it. Man do I love waking up from that one and realizing it was all bullshit.

Anyone else have trouble figuring out if things were a dream or if they really happened? I don't mean just for a minute when you're waking up.

I'm a little concerned I didn't graduate because of that class I forgot to go to.

My actual life was like that dream, for a while. It's horrible...horrible

A long time ago, I sometimes had the similar dream, to yours:

flying between houses where I had lived, paid the rent in advance for years, but lost track of where it was, did I still have the right to be there after so long, the empty rooms, big five room apartments, slightly rundown but with lots of space, furnished, in interesting towns where I'd never really been, in great detail, each place different, so.much detail it must be a real place, where I had never been ...or had I...then flying off to another same...
Its a revelation from God
Giantz_comeback : 10/16/2019 9:57 pm : link
That you do not know his son Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but through him.
Finals week is the final judgement
Giantz_comeback : 10/16/2019 10:01 pm : link
We can be under the law (1st covenant) or under grace through faith in what Jesus did on the Cross for us. For all who received him he removed all our sin and gave us new life in him. Free from guilt shame and condemnation and a clear conscience towards God as his Son just like Jesus in whom he is well pleased.

This is the critical information that you have been missing and why it continues to stir on your heart.

remember them because I wake up in the middle of them a lot because if I move the wrong direction in my sleep my screwed up shoulder hurts enough to wake me up. That dream is common though, like others said, I've had a million versions of that one too.

I also had one once that went on for like a year it felt like and in it I was a subsistence farmer somewhere in old Asia and whatever the language was I spoke it fluently with the people around me. In that dream I went to sleep, I woke up I worked the farm I drank butter tea I felt odd for a long while coming off of that one because I was immersed for a long time.
