Daniel Jones ranks first in attempts into tight coverage

NyquistX3 : 10/16/2019 11:37 am
The NFL has a player tracking system that can measure things like defender distance, and they have a stat that measures how often a QB attempts a pass fit into a tight window. The stat is defined as the amount of passing attempts a quarterback makes where there is a defender within 1 yard or less of the receiver at the time of completion or incompletion. Just over 31% of Jones' passing attempts have been thrown into tight coverage, which ranks first among all QBs.

That could say some things about the Giants' receivers' ability to generate separation from defenders, Jones' style of play in general, the scheme, ect. Something else to take into consideration when evaluating Jones' performance after four starts.
Let’s

Without SB
Coach Red Beaulieu : 10/16/2019 11:46 am : link
Ds can play more 7 men in the box soft Cover 2s and Tampa 2, so usually not a lot of space. Tampa 2 is especially effective against wco.

SB should force Ds into more 8 man box Cover 1s and 3s. DJ8 should not have been fooled by Little Bills disguised coverages, no reason for him to play run against Hilliman. Bad coaching by shemur.
This has been the case all year

In preseason, the WRs were barely getting any separation. Next-gen stats had it around 1-1.5 yards
Well, every pass he made against NE was in tight coverage
George from PA : 10/16/2019 11:54 am : link
I suspect....that will change dramaticly after Arizona....which will.near zero as long as stays away from Patrick Peterson.
Just like at Duke
AcesUp : 10/16/2019 12:13 pm : link
You don't need the NextGen Stats to say that but it's encouraging that it backs up what you see on the field. I'm interested to see what he can do when his WRs are gaining separation. If we can get Engram and Barkley that would go a long way in helping that cause. I think DJ is inline for another Bucs-like game against a pretty terrible Cardinals secondary if those guys are active.

Independence Bowl last season against Temple (without Rock Ya Sin) would be an example that could be looked at for Duke receivers getting good separation. Jones was 30-41, 5 TD's.

He still had 2 picks and don't remember the details of the picks. Ever since I've watched him (4 years), he's always pushed it. Someone's gonna have to rein him in if they want that adjusted. Eventually he'll figure this out anyway.

The edge/olb FA market is stronger than the OT

Give Shaq Barrett the money

Draft OT1 or 2 or WR1 or 2

result of the injuries to Barkley and others as well as poor WR talent when the top guys are all out. Defenses do not need to defend the run With both Barkley and Gallman out. Hopefully they can get Barkley, Shep and Engram back on the field soon, which will also help Slayton who looks like a keeper so far.
It also says something
mittenedman : 10/16/2019 9:44 pm : link
about Shurmur's error in strategy. The Giants do not have good WRs. Neither did the 86 team. You create separation by using a run heavy attack with built in play action. That's the type of team I thought Gettleman was creating but it's not the strategy Shurmur's going with.

It's too bad because it really sounds like they're on the same page when they speak.
Barkley hasn't been there to be a running team with.
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/16/2019 9:52 pm : link
But even when he was in there for those two games, you can't just line up barkley against a defense that's waiting for it and expect magic to happen. If you don't have something to back off a defense, hoping for a 1986 rushing attack isn't going to work. The talent level around the league is much too high for that.

Very good question. I think DJ has a propensity to just take the first read and go with it. When perhaps their is a better option with a better read/more patience...

It's easier said than done when you're going against the best defense in football and Jon Hilliman is your RB...

With Barkley, it's a different story. But, I can't blame the coach for not being able to establish the run these last couple of games. The downgrade from Hilliman to Barkley is humongous.

And I hate to blame Hilliman... the guy is doing his best. He's just not good. On top of it, he's been a fumbling factory.

Hah... obviously I mean the downgrade from Barkley to Hilliman is humongous... not the other way around.

Guess I haven't had enough coffee yet.

Well our WR's definitely aren't getting separation, but there is some truth there. He trusts his pre snap reads a ton and his incredible arm kind of masks the problem a bit. That third pick he threw against the Pats you could almost seeing him going oh shit as he lets the ball go.

That says a lot about the receivers getting open. For the most part, they aren’t. Of course, for the past two weeks, we have been short handed and guys like Fowler, Latimer, Jones, Ellison just are not going to get hardly any separation at all, if any. (Jones the best of that foursome.)

Now having said that, we have played two of the best defenses in the nfl the past two weeks so I’m sure that counts for something. Let’s see how we do (getting separation) while playing Arizona and Lions. I know Peterson is back, but he can’t cover all 3 WRs and the TE.

Let’s give Danny boy some nice targets fellows.

mittenedman : 10/18/2019 8:22 am : link
He does the same thing when he has Barkley & Gallman. He philosophically does not stick with the run. Even when he does it’s too much from shotgun. IMO. I like an old school run game coming at you from under center, going left/right/middle and working play action.

Now Shurmur a WCO guy so I cant be surprised, but this approach does help get separation when your WRs are overmatched.
Doesn't PA
crick n NC : 10/18/2019 8:48 am : link
Affect LB'S the DL, and any in-box safety more than corners? Your separation is probably more to do with man considering that zones have holes or Windows if read properly.
Running the ball helps guys get seperation because it forces
Zeke's Alibi : 10/18/2019 8:53 am : link
teams to play man, but we still need guys to consistently beat man coverage. We've gone up against some good secondaries under DJ outside of the Bucs. Play Action doesn't really help guys get separation in man with the exception of the guys sitting in zone.

idiotsavant : 10/18/2019 9:25 am : link
I think coach knows how to do this he just, as mentioned has a bias towards a certain type of play.

And yes, play action gets wrs open, can get, you pair it w certain routes deep and throw middle if that makes any sense.
I mean
idiotsavant : 10/18/2019 9:41 am : link
Run action with a real run game, derp wrs routes, that creates lots of space, your going to be able to scheme a TE or a #3 wr or a RB open.

Also, outside runs especially quick outside zone runs, if effective, that buys your qb more time and space, which gives your wrs or whomever more time to get open . Also, corners who lack discipline , thinking here comes a freight train, loose coverage.
In theory man is man
idiotsavant : 10/18/2019 9:43 am : link
But, in practice, when QBs and rbs run for many yards, corners start to look back and loose a step.
Play action helping separation
mittenedman : 10/18/2019 12:36 pm : link
*Pulls coverage out of the middle of the field while simultaneously attacking that area with routes (WRs have more space to get open)

*Longer developing routes/deeper drops (WRs have more time to get open)
We need some better WRs.
Dave in Hoboken : 10/18/2019 12:57 pm : link
Would love to pair Jones with legit number one.
Teams may end up with better QBs
mrvax : 10/18/2019 1:12 pm : link
if the QB played in college with receivers that did not get much separation.
Its x3
idiotsavant : 10/18/2019 4:30 pm : link
If you have run line action w effective runs, also a real threat of backside QB runs, those two things obviously effect lb position, BUT also, we've seen it a million x:

Those things get in the head of cornerbacks as well for the 3rd element, the pass.

CB looks back to see qb/rb running free on 1st down, 2nd down cb looks back, ball sail's over his head.
The WRs get 0 separation
TD : 10/18/2019 8:02 pm : link
Jones is doing a masterful job at sneaking throws into tight windows - certainly for a rookie.

Not to bash Eli but Eli would have been massacred already. He can’t make the throws Jones can.
