The Giants need to get inside the top 5 or it’s another knock on Pat Shurmur’s resume.
There are times he gets in play calling grooves, and his system is fine (most coaches use most of the same stuff, besides that ugly Mcadoo-McCarthy tree), but he’s behind on play action value

and 1949 playing pro football before concussions on back-to-back plays made him think about a different line of work. Now 91 years old, the former businessman, lifeguard and surfing nut is the patriarch of “a bunch of jocks in the family.” He may not attend Husky games any more but watch out
if you shake his hand. He’s got a grip like a vise.”

In 1948 at Boston George Cheverko caught his only pass of the season from new Giants’ QB Charlie Conerly, lateraled it to center Carl Fennema who ran in it for a touchdown, the first TD pass of Conerly’s career.

November 16, 2018 Ron Johnson – Two Records Turn 50

“On this day in 1968, running back Ron Johnson set Michigan’s single-game rushing record against Wisconsin. Yes, Ron Johnson’s record turns 50 today. The amazing Ronald Adolphis Johnson ran over, around, and through the Badger defense on a muddy-mess of a field that day.
When it was all over, Johnson had rushed for 348 yards on 31 carries. He had one carry for minus one yard. So, Ron’s “net” yardage for the day was “only” 347 yards. Wow – think about that for a minute. He averaged almost 11.2 yards per carry (11.19) and also caught 2 passes for another 25 yards. Oh, by the way, Ron Johnson also returned one kickoff for 15 yards that day. When it was all done, he totaled 387-yards in all-purpose offense. Oops, I almost forgot to mention that he also scored five rushing touchdowns (35, 67, 1, 60, and 49 yards). Yes, fifty-years later, Ron Johnson is still the only Wolverine to rush for 347-yards in one game and score five rushing touchdowns – amazing!
Michigan won the game (34-9) in front of a rain-soaked crowd of 51, 117. It was the last home game of Ron Johnson’s stellar career at Michigan. The decisive win pushed Michigan’s record to 8-1-0 and kept them undefeated in the Big Ten at 6 wins and 0 losses. It was the perfect set-up for the season ending game at Ohio State on November 23, 1968. Unfortunately, Michigan lost the last game to the hated Buckeyes and finished with a final record of 8 wins and 2 losses. The Wolverines ended the conference season in second place with a final record of 6 wins and 1 loss.

The bottom line is simple – Ron Johnson had a stellar career at Michigan. He was a record setting player who also achieved some significant “firsts” at Michigan. He was the first African-American player to be a Captain, Most Valuable Player, All-Conference and All-American in a single season. Oh yes, he was also the first African-American player to be a two-time team MVP (1967 and 1968).
The best way to summarize Ron Johnson’s illustrious Michigan career is to document some more of the important “firsts” that connect him to Michigan Football.
* Ron Johnson is the first Michigan back to rush for 270 yards in a single game. (Navy in 1967).
* Johnson is the first, and only, Michigan Man to rush for 347 yards in a single game! (A 34-9 win over Wisconsin on November 16, 1968).
* Ron Johnson is the first man to score 5 touchdowns in one game in the “modern era.” He scored 5 rushing touchdowns against Wisconsin in 1968.
* Johnson is the first, and only, Michigan running back to rush for 19 touchdowns in a single season. (1968)
* Ron Johnson was the first Michigan Man to record over 1,300 yards in a single season in 1968. He finished with 1,391 in that record setting season. He was also the first man to average over 130 yards per game in a single season in 1968. (He finished with an average of 139.1 yards per game in 1968.)
* Johnson was the first Maize and Blue running back to record at least 4 games of more than 150 yards in a single season in 1968. (Note – he was also the first man to record two 200-yard games in one season in 1968 and also the first to total over 300 yards in one game.)
* Ron Johnson was the first Wolverine to record 2,400 rushing yards in a career from 1966 to 1968. (He finished with 2,417.)
* Johnson was the first Maize and Blue running back to record ten 100-yard games in a career from 1966 to 1968.
Yes, Ron Johnson was a great player and a better man. He quietly waited his turn, then, went on to enjoy a record-setting Michigan Football career. Today is a wonderful day to appreciate one of the greatest individual performances in Michigan and college football history.
Ron Johnson moved on to a successful career in the National Football League and then entered the business world. He continued his successful journey as a family man, businessman and model citizen.”

““Ron was a great player for us during a difficult era,” Giants president John Mara said Sunday. “He was smart, tough and was always a class act.”
“Ron Johnson was the first mentor I had on the New York Giants,” said former defensive end George Martin, a member ofthe franchise’s Ring of Honor who was a rookie in 1975,Johnson’s final season. “He led by example. He didn’t do it to impress any of us. That was just his character. He was a leader by nature. I looked up to Ron and I tried to emulate every fiber of his being because to me he not only walked the walk, but talked the talk.”

Johnson joined the Giants on Jan. 26, 1970 in one of the most famous trades in franchise history, one that sent speedy wide receiver Homer Jones to Cleveland for Johnson, defensive tackle Jim Kanicki and linebacker Wayne Meylan.
Jones caught just 10 passes in his only season with the Browns. But Johnson became one of the NFL’s most productive backs. He was a Pro Bowler in both 1970 and 1972 when he rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each (14-game) season, including a career-high 1,182 yards in ’72.
In his six years with the Giants, Johnson rushed for 3,836 yards, which places him seventh on the franchise’s career list, between Ahmad Bradshaw and Hall of Famer Frank Gifford. With 1,066 rushing attempts, he is one of six players with more than 1,000 carries in a Giants uniform. Johnson’s 33 rushing touchdowns are the eighth-highest total in franchise history, one less than Gifford and two less than Ottis Anderson.
Johnson’s Giants resume also included 189 receptions for 1,813 yards and 15 touchdowns.
“When you looked at Ron, he looked like an ordinary guy,” Martin said. “But he had something inside of him - when he ran with the ball, he looked so unorthodox. He was so determined. When he put on a uniform, he was like Superman. He just transformed himself. I looked at him and I tried to emulate everything Ron Johnson did.”

Johnson entered the NFL as Cleveland’s first-round draft choice – 20th overall – in 1969. In his one season with the Browns, he rushed for 472 yards and seven touchdowns, and caught 24 passes for 163 yards.
Johnson played at Michigan from 1966-68. He finished his career as the school’s leading rusher and is currently 16th on the school’s all-time list with 2,440 yards. Johnson ran for more than 100 yards in 10 games.
He still holds the Wolverines’ single-game records with 347 rushing yards and five touchdowns against Wisconsin on Nov. 16, 1968. That season, Johnson was Michigan’s first African-American football captain and was named an All-America after rushing for 1,391 yards and 19 touchdowns, the latter figure still the school’s single-season record. Johnson was selected the Chicago Tribune Silver Football Award winner, Michigan’s most valuable player. He finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy balloting and was named the Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient as Michigan’s top student-athlete.
Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Michigan in 1969.
Johnson was born on Oct. 17, 1947 in Detroit. His older brother, Alex, was a major league baseball player who won the American League batting title in 1970.

Following his football career, Johnson founded Rackson, a food service company based in New Jersey. The company eventually owned numerous Kentucky Fried Chicken franchises in Michigan and New Jersey.
In 1989, Johnson, along with Giants greats Harry Carson and George Martin, founded Minority Athletes Networking (MAN)because they saw the need for positive role models working in the lives of young people following the Central Park jogger incident.
“It was Ron’s ideas that helped craft the foundation for MAN,” Martin said. “We were glad to be a part of that impactful organization and we had no idea it would last 30-plus years. Ron actually came up with the name Minority Athletes Networking. He was actually the drive for many, many years.
“When you looked at the residue Ron left in his life, it was always positive, always affirming, and it was always impactful. Every time I look in the mirror, I see some aspect of Ron that has had a profound impact on me, because he was a guy that wasn’t bound by being an athlete, he wasn’t bound by his own color. He had no limitations as a man, period. And that’s the way he conducted his life. I don’t think people will ever accurately measure the impact of Ron Johnson had on society as a whole, and that includes Michigan, as well.”
Johnson was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2008.”

““You had to be there to believe it . ... there in gloomy Yankee Stadium as the Giants, their glorious winning streak all but shattered, trailed the Redskins, 33-14, going into the final period. Yon had to see it with your own eyes to believe what the Giants did yesterday as they turned disaster into triumph in a comebacK which will be talked about as long as there are Giant fans.

The key to the magnificent comeback is contained in two words ‘to believe.’ The Giants believe in themselves. Sitting beside his dressing cubicle ,in the locker room, the sweat still beading his face, Ron Johnson told it like it was to a solid, encircling ring of reporters and radiomen. Ron had scored the first of the Giants' three fourth period touchdowns on a 5-yard burst up the gut of the Redskins' goal-line and Ron had scored the winner on a 9 yard dash around the Redskins' right flank.

Three Touchdowns Down, Yet They Won

"How in the world," a man asked, "did a team three touchdowns behind ever dare to dream they could pull it out? How did you do it? Where did it come from? Ron Johnson thought a moment. "We got something from within," he said. "We believed." Outside, on the dank ramps, as the fans flowed slowly toward the exits, one heard over and over again "unbelievable .. . absolutely unbelievable," this from tough Giant addicts who have seen almost everything over the years. . . Inside, from one cubicle to another round the dressing room, you heard the same sermon, perhaps couched in different words, that Johnson was preaching belief in themselves and in each other. Across the room, Fran Tarkenton. who had directed the winning drives, was talking about a fellow named Tucker Frederickson and how he always had believed in him. "They said Frederickson's legs wouldn't let him run deep, but they can't say it anymore. I've always believed in him, and I've always believed he had exceptional ability and competitive spirit." "Today," Tarkenton said, "he proved himself to everybody."

Tremendous Final-Quarter Rally

Tarkenton had taken his offensive platoon, with Frederickson at fullback and Johnson at halfback, 86 yards, including 15 yards for offensive interference, for a touchdown at 5:19 of the fourth period, slicing the Redskins' lead to 33-21. At 7:04 of the fourth period, Tarkenton had completed a 57 yard touchdown connection with Frederickson, slicing the Redskins', lead to 33 28. And, with one minute left to play, Tarkenton had handed off to Johnson, who ran 9 yards around the Redskins' right flank, making the Giants the winners, 35 33. "This is a team which believes in itself," Tarkenton said. "We believe in each other." ' . He talked about how the ability of Frederickson complements the ability of Johnson. "Their defense .was rolling to the wide side," Tarkenton said. "They were giving us Frederickson; the strong linebacker had to take Frederickson man to man, and it killed them." The individual statistics bore out the quarterback's analysis. Frederickson had caught 10 passes for 165 yards, twice the catches made by the league's leading receiver, Charley Taylor, and for 65 more yards. Frederickson slso had packed leather 13 times for 33 yards and the initial touchdown of the game.

Outrushed Loop's Leading Rusher

And Johnson had out-rushed the Redskins' Larry Brown, leading rusher in the league, 106 yards to 53, and he even out caught Taylor by six catches to five. Across in his office, Alex (Big Red) Webster was saying: "It's their attitude. They believe in themselves." And he talked about the tremendous job done by the defense in the first half. It was a job of defense which. four times thwarted the mighty Redskin offense, with its leading rusher, top pass receiver and No. 2 passer, and made it settle for field goals. "What I really loved about our defense," Big Red said, "was the way they never stopped believing in themselves. At the end, they got the ball back for us." The crowd had chanted over and over "Defense . . . Defense . . . Defense." There was 4:17 left to play when the Giant defense stopped the Redskins short of a first down and forced a punt. . , There was 4:06 to play when Tarkenton went to work at his 27 for the final drive. - "The play was power 28. from red left," Johnson said as he described his 9 yard burst around end for the victorious tally. "Everybody blocked down . . . Frederickson got their end . . . and I just strolled in. , "It's our attitude," Johnson said. "We believe in ourselves."
