I love Didi - but - for what he wants to make and likely can get, i'd agree.

Get two more DJ's (because yes they grow on trees), and steal whomever the Astros stole from the Cardinals' system because our talent is vastly superior to the on-field performance in the ALCS.

BleedBlue : 10/18/2019 12:03 am : link
Pry Cole away. With Verlander getting older, it shrinks Houston's window of blocking us from WS. Get rid of EE, Gardner, Sanchez if you can find a trade partner and we will be right back here but will be the favorites lol

You're just as stupid as the person who made that comment you replied to.

The catcher for Houston is batting .000 in this series, yet they're winning easily.
How much longer with Sanchez?

I know 2 years ago he was great and the Yanks will point to that when they do bring him back for 2020, but I am at wits end with him. They can do better than a guy who will hit you 35 homers but with over 200k’s and a .230 average all while being one of, if not the worst defensive catchers in the league.

Didn't their catcher lead off the inning Houston hit the three run Homer? You know the difference between the two? Houston's catcher swings at good pitches and plays good defense, he is a thumper and isn't relied on for offense. He does his job. Sanchez Ks at an alarming rate. People need to stop making excuses for this lazy bum

I haven't liked him for a while so I'm biased but I would look for a trade partner. People been giving me shit on here for days now because I continue to point out his lack of an approach at the plate. For some reason he is their golden boy. Imo he is great trade bait to get more contact hitters in here

I don’t think he should be brought back if it means more than 3/45.

The question is, for all of you arguing about Sanchez, would you sign him to a 20M per contract? I am not so sure.

He was 4th in OPS and wOBA among catchers this season. There's a 95% chance the person you replace him with isn't as good as him. Once again, he has the only hit with a man on base over the last 7 innings. Yet, you've decided he's the person you're going to bitch about incessantly. It makes you sound like a fool. Literally no one thinks he's played well this postseason, but your complaints are ridiculously over the top.

No fucking shot, then again I wanted him traded last two years while his value was higher. I'd move Torres to short. Let Didi walk. See if you can find a trade partner for Sanchez. I look for a 2B who is a contact hitter. I liked DJ at first. We need another player like him.

Postseason...
IDGAF what he does during a ridiculous long and watered down regular season. We are going to be in playoffs for next ten years. We need guys who can hit in playoffs..I rather a catcher who Bata last, plays great defense and has solid plate discipline and spend money on a stud pitcher or a solid contact hitting middle infielder

The guy replacing him wouldn’t need to be better than him for the team to be better offensively. And defensively, if they built a 4 foot wall behind the plate, it would be better than him and save the team more runs.
Boone is beyond reproach as he won 103 games
xman : 10/18/2019 12:24 am : link
If he were to leave NY and say go to Detroit he will turn that team into an instant winner. He is that good. I figure he is like Torre who waited to come to the yanks to show what a great manager he was.

Mix and match. Wonder what the lineup will be tomorrow.

I liked his lineup better tonight but Gardner third early in series was a joke and could have costed us some runs. I don't blame Boone tho. Yanks didn't get much from starters and didn't hit.

Hard not to agree with this -- not winning tomorrow I mean. The team has been beaten up by the Astros. No doubt it is not only unhappy with itself as a team, but doubtful of each other internally, especially their pitchers. The lack of starters and bullpen stoppers has been fatal when playing against top hitting of the kind offered by the Astros -- maybe the best overall seen in the last who knows how many years -- and top pitching it turns out they can't reliably hit.

Winning three from these guys looks to be and ought to be impossible. So what can be shown tomorrow that they couldn't bring tonight, game 2 or game 3? Win and it would be down to two, that's true, but taking out Verlander under these circumstances? That would be crazy. But it also would just be baseball.

No he isn’t. He’s got some great power for an infielder, and has been a really strong ISO guy for 3 years, but his batting average is pedestrian at best and his BABIP is historically below league average.

I don't think there's much of a mystery here...
M.S. : 10/18/2019 5:42 am : link

...the Yankees have had a remarkable, amazing run this season in light of all the crazy injuries, but the end-of-season stats showed that the Astros could match our bats; trot out starting pitching that we could only dream of; and BTW they won more games.

Should the Astros advance to the World Series, it will surprise no one at all that the two opponents have very strong starting pitching.

Oh, well.
Amazing how you can win 100+ games
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 10/18/2019 6:51 am : link
And a series and your run can come down to a couple of at bats going well for one team and poorly for the other. Yankees kind of over achieved this year with all the injuries. Their flaw from the beginning was not having the lights out #1 pitcher. It's why they likely don’t move on.
Sanchez is immensely frustrating
mattnyg05 : 10/18/2019 6:51 am : link
You can point to OPS (which would obviously be inflated because of the few hits he does end up with, most are home runs) and he obviously he a homer tonight which is more than anyone in the lineup can say, but his approach at times gives you no chance.

You see how beneficial a guy like DJ Lemaheiu has been and to me it’s him, Torres hitting more disciplined and Urshela hitting for average. With two strikes Gary is a black hole but for a home run every so often. Encarnacion too, and Stanton in last years playoffs. We have too many guys that good pitchers chew up because they swing at terrible pitches. Just my eye test opinion. I know the stat heads will come back with 500 reasons why Sanchez is the best catcher but he is feast or famine, and I feel like it’s 80 percent famine and the 20 percent feast inflates his stats during the season.

There are weeks and months stretches of time where this guy is a complete zero at the plate, which many catchers are anyway so I guess what can be done. It’s just frustrating.
Fat lady not singing yet, but she is walking up to the stage.
GiantsUA : 10/18/2019 6:53 am : link
I feel like I have seen this series before.

My point is
mattnyg05 : 10/18/2019 6:57 am : link
A lot of catchers are zero at the plate. But when you swing at terrible pitches, don’t put the ball in play, and have zero approach with two strikes, you’re almost less than zero at times. Just me-but I think actually hitting the ball might be making a comeback as opposed to just loading up for a homer or nothing.

I agree 100% but I doubt Cashman/Boone do. Heard Boone in a presser a month or so ago & someone asked him if he cared that many of the batting averages were so low. Boone blew a gasket saying they don't care about batting average,it's not a statistic that's important to them.He doesn't care if they strike out, only hard contact is important! Yet,we hear people in baseball say the Yankees need more hitters like DJL. The Yankee philosophy works in regular season, but fails miserable in the postseason(except when they're facing the Twins) when they're not facing second rate pitching!

I agree in thinking they won't bring Didi back (even though he's one of the few guys in the lineup that will go oppo & is a LHB. Also,I believe we'll see the real Didi next season as he will have had a year after his surgery!)Gleyber SS/DJL 2B next season. Real interesting off season-CC,Didi,EE & possibly Gardner,Chapman & Betances coming off the books/leaving in FA The only good I can see from this debacle against the Astros is maybe Hal will be shamed into spending for Cole but based on his fiscally conservative attitude,I doubt it!

Didi K’d at a 15.4% rate this season, which if he had posted over about 200 more at bats would have placed him within the top 35 individual players in the league for lowest %. So yes you have a point Tesla, however for a guy who strikes out relatively so little he is a feast or famine hitter (given his .276 OBP, he sure isn’t taking walks to offset the .237 BA). Take this season with a grain of salt if you want. It’s yet to be seen if Cashman can find anybody better than Didi, but it should not be assumed he just gets re-signed to a big deal entering his age 30 season.

Their flaw is they haven’t hit, pitched, played defense or managed well. Just a complete abomination of a series from top to bottom. They need to make major changes. Can’t have an all RH lineup that allows teams to carry ZERO lefties and can’t have a roster where you can’t pinch hit/mix it up in the playoffs. Major bonehead decisions made on playoff roster and strategy.

And you eat what you have to of Giancarlo’s contract and get him out of here. He’s a disgrace.

Tesla : 10/18/2019 8:24 am : link
3/45 is the most I would go for him....and 3/36 (or less) would be ideal.

He has a huge flaw in his game....he's absolutely allergic to walks, and his OBP is usually terrible as a result of that. He's been clutch in the playoffs in the past, but as the series is proving that is not a repeatable skill that you can rely upon. His defense has been excellent but you can expect that to begin to decline as well as he enters is 30's.

from an advanced metrics perspective, Didi has also historically had an a pretty awful batted ball profile -- low line drive rate, and for years an extremely low hard contact rate. In 2018 he managed to get the hard contact up to 36%, which is OK, but it's come back down to 34% this year.

Because of this, hes a low baseline BABIP guy that hits a lot of pop ups. When you couple it with the fact that he doesn't walk, this is not a guy that I sign long term unless it's really friendly.

By age 31-32 I don't see how you could value him (on a good team) as much more than a defense-first SS who has an OK stick for an 8-9 hole hitter.

It's a shame because he's a hell of a likable guy, but I could go on for hours about things I'd rather see the yankees do with $60M over 4 years, let alone more than that.
That was damn ugly!

This has been a resilient group all year. I hope they can make the Astros at least sweat and get it back to Houston. Last night proved to me it’s not so much the Astros pitching as it is we are just ice cold. We’ve had our chances in every single game this series but haven’t gotten a big hit since game 1. Maybe we start cashing in before it’s officially over.

More than 30% of their ABs have concluded with K's in this series.
Some of Didi's career stats
Carson53 : 10/18/2019 9:12 am : link
This is based on regular season numbers in 8 years in
the majors:

OPS .742
OPS+ 99
OBP .313 (that's a biggie to me)
BB 201 (so about 25 walks a year)

baseball-reference.com/players/g/gregodi01

Those to me are below average numbers offensively,
I like the guy, but it may be time to move on.
The Yanks may offer him a qualifying offer, which would be around 18 mill.+ next season, gets them a draft pick.
Let some other team overpay to sign him, get some starting pitching!

I don’t think that’s the right way to look at this. Look at his stats with the Yankees. Before this year, he was a legitimate top ten SS for several years. The question for the FO is will Didi performance continue to drop or will he return to form.

I didn’t hear no bell. Fuck the Astros.

The difference in this series has been that while the Astros haven’t hit well either but are getting timely home runs

Too much offseason talk.

Save it for the offseason.

Can't give up on this squad after the year they had and all the resiliency they've showed.

It's been a horrific last 3 games. No one can get a timely hit. This isn't on the pitchers even though I get the sense that the majority of the fan ire this offseason directed at Cashman will indeed revolve around pitching.

How many runners have we left on base? In scoring position?

Bases loaded 1 out and we get no one home.

The situational hitting that was so good all year has quite literally just gone "POOF" and vanished.

The Yankees need something... anything to spark them tonight. I don't expect a roll over and die game here.

One inning at a time. If it ends tonight, so be it... we can discuss the offseason then. But it's not over yet.

I've licked my wounds and am ready to find out tonight what the Yankees are really made of. I expect them to have done the same and to be even readier to overcome their little problems.
