Extremely dark, so prepare yourself. However, JP was amazing in the role. Some complained that it was slow, at times, which it was, but it’s the back story of the character.
I would not expect JP to get caught up in the DC universe movies. JP is Oscar worthy IMO and if you are a fan of DC you will love it compared to all the garbage movies they put out.
Not really by choice the second time. My 18year old needed someone to see it with.Excellent acting ,my 18year old son's first comment when it was done was the point of the movie was that society creates its own monsters
.....the laugh was forced EVERYTIME hardly sold as a condition.
....2 hours of "becomming" the Joker, 30 minutes of being the joker
Honestly as sad as this is to say because JP did a nice job with the role, I would rather watch Leto's character. Ledger's version of the role will probably never be bested.
As dark as Ledger's take was I still laughed a lot. That's part of the villains ethos and sick charm. That was starkly missing here.
I left that movie with the thought that there's no way around some loon copy-catting some of what he/she saw of the Joker in this movie. And that's a scary proposition.
thinking they are getting a marvel-esque MCU movie and leave saying WTF.
Understand what you are going to see-
it’s a Scorsese/Kubrique-esque drama much akin to Taxi Driver (which this movie draws a ton of inspiration from)..yes it’s wrapped in The DC universe, but make no mistake this is a profound piece of art about the fragility of the human mind and societies role in shaping a psycho.
Great flick...I absolutely loved it in a sort of “A clockwork orange” or “Requiem for a Dream” way..., but know what you are going to see. It is disturbing.

Did you ever look into how ledger got that character? He stole it completely and it’s not original. Generally people don’t know this. I’ll let you do some research you’ll be amazed at the results. I’ll give you a clue it’s on YouTube.
I love that it got great reviews and is still dominating the box office. Love even more that it pisses off certain people, media outlets, and political parties. Absolutely fantastic.
RE: It’s kind of annoying how many people go to see it Â

See, I took it less as society shaping the psycho and more as societies failure in removing a psycho and preventing what took place.
What's really surprising though is Phoenix being open to doing a sequel. He pretty much promised he'd never do that with any of his role but he really seemed to enjoy this one.
By any metric it is easily his most successful film of his career.
'thinking they are getting a marvel-esque MCU movie' Â
I'm as up for a dark tale as the next guy. While the character is psychotic, and it is an iconic role, it contains or should, moments of actual humor arising from his mental illness. That's missing for me.
that it was a good movie, but wasn't really about the Joker, and that it is hard to imagine this guy becoming a criminal mastermind who'd actually challenge Batman.

the theory that it was a movie about mental illness re-skinned as the DC joker is plausible and happens to a lot of movies.
The age of the joker and bruce wayne is too big of a gap. Even Tim Burton's joker would be too old. Michael Keaton was 38 in 1989, his parents were shot when he was 8 so the Joker was probably pushing 55-60 there.
It glorifies mob violence and the hero's are basically mentally unstable people. It left me feeling dirty frankly. On exiting the movie theater I expected to see lots of people wearing masks in the parking lot setting fires to cars. I'd rather see an uplifting movie.

In the interest of keeping this thread spoiler free, there are certain aspects of Jokers dozens of origin stories that this film could fit in perfectly...I can’t really say more but it makes sense in the context of the movie.
Off of Phoenix. Just so riveting. I thought the directed pieces it all together perfectly to. Just really haunting, saw it almost 2 weeks ago, and I’m still thinking about it.
I can't remember the last movie that moved me this much. Amazing how they managed to turn Joker into a sympathetic figure. I read an article about a criminal psychologist raving about how realistic it was.
I saw it oast night and am a big batman guy, 15K comics etc etc.
From the Adam West era Truly great performance opening the door for mad joker unleashed. An interesting view from the eyes of the Joker.
Overall a very good movie. Not going to get into an Oscar debate for I am not a voter and have not seen the competition
The concept of the Wayne family turned me off at times. Understood the direction but simply long story short do not agree. Poor role casting there too IMO in regards to the Mother and Father. No mention of Alfred at the gate or not, but former British intelligence think his part was fumbled too.
Again solid movie that flowed and in a blink of an eye it was over. Nothing to wait for after the credits. Worth seeing, and fully set to take the Joker to the next stage, ah movie.
Ledger was tops for me, but this Joker has the ability to carve out his own notch. If the role is expanded further they will need a strong Batman actor to even the playing field.
Most superhero movies don’t feel like cinema to me. Everything about this movie seemed like a film that didn’t have to rely on source material or the comic books.
DC would be smart to keep doing the standalone films. JP’s Joker won’t be showing up in any Batman movies.
And here’s a Giants family connection - JP is engaged to Rooney Mara.
two hours of watching someone descend into becoming a psychopath. The only interesting part was his affect on the local populace.
hahahhaaha
What a jackass response. The guy does not have a right to not like the film? Especially since he gave a reason for why he didn’t like it?
I mean, of course he has a right. I just found it humorous. There are matters of opinion, but then when that opinion has nothing to do with whether or not a movie is good, and then that opinion is used to determine whether or not a movie is good, I find it funny. Sorry.
the film was made by the director of Old School and Hangover Â
If he doesn't win it, then the award has no real meaning anymore.
the guy commanded your attention with every scene, he changed his body for this, his emotional set was shown in each tension scene. it was just masterful.
Phoenix has been as good as any actor our there for a while now Â

I thought it was excellent, Phoenix absolutely crushed it.

I saw it but wished I hadn't
I loved it man...such a great performance by Phoenix.

That was, uh, disturbing. And yet I liked it. The scissors thing...could have gone without that. Wife shrieked that scene, Haha.

But it's going to make a lot of people feel uncomfortable, especially. Hence the unease from the critics.
I also wonder how many younger viewers will view it since this is more about story-telling (a dying art form) and less of an action flick.

Well, number one, it is rated R. Number 2, it's doing great at the box office.
I agree with you that it was a masterpiece. There's really nothing I can even nitpick, I was just so fixated on the whole thing.
Many disagree with me, but I think we're smack in the middle of the nadir of the movie industry (TV is a different story).
I've long criticized that there are too many reboots/remakes and mindless action films, especially comic book films.
But while Joker is a comic book movie, it is far from mindless. This director took huge risks, something Hollywood rarely does anymore.
Totally agree. The acting was good otherwise total garbage.

it was great from top to bottom.
If this is the direction WB wants to take DC to, i am all for it. Its alittle too real at times and you see how this can make others uneasy.
JP is a shoe in for an Oscar. Its his.
If he doesn't win it, then the award has no real meaning anymore.
