I think the NFL got one thing right in allowing team celebrations again. Some of them are silly but as BBI used to say, it's much better acknowledging your teammates and all revelling in the celebration than celebrating by yourself like it's all about you. Listening to Peppers talk about the team celebration after his pick 6 against the Redskins and how much he appreciated celebrating with the guys really solidified this opinion. It's a minor thing but good job NFL.
I grew up with all the players simply handing or flipping the ball to the official. Then Homer Jones introduced the spike and the rest, as they say, is history.
Make it competitive and it could turn into the NFL equivalent of the NBA slam dunk competition.
While I'm not a big fan of the premeditated choreographed type celebrations I don't think it should be a penalty. To each his own, and there is no harm in it.
But for me, the most cringe inducing thing about the group celebrations is the realization that grown men must practice these things like a group of 12 year old cheerleaders.
I know, another “Get off my lawn” guy.
Just another thought, even though the above comments seem thoughtless, remember when Bill Gramatica tore his ACL celebrating a field goal? It really would suck if a player got hurt during one of these little dance routines after scoring. Just hand the ball to the ref, and go sit down.
