NFT: John Smoltz sounds like Jim Kaat

AndyMilligan : 10/19/2019 3:08 pm
Uncanny, their voices are so similar. Their cadence and how they speak about the game as well..

Always liked Kaat

Iím nor sure I remember well enough to compare.
Well

Smoltz talks a LOT more. Voices are similar.
That's what analysts do nowadays, irregardless of the
particular sport, they talk a LOT more.
Less is more to me.

Yea he does talk a lot more. I kind of like Smoltz. I'm not sure I'm learning a whole lot but he has an easy presence in the booth.
Smoltz is pretty awful

Kaat was a master. They might sound the same but thatís where it ends. At least for me.

Hmmm, I don't thinks so. Smoltz is very good. And yes he talks a touch to much.
He blabbers on and on and on
mattnyg05 : 10/19/2019 6:43 pm : link
And half the stuff he says doesnít make any sense.

Ron Darling is a better announcer IMO. Even Tim McCarver was better (though towards the end he was a tough listen).

I think Smoltz is informative, I love listening to pros about the nuances of pitching. Thatís also why I loved Kaat and Cone is awesome too in that regard. The issue I have is he never has time to talk Yankees. When the Astros are in the field, heís blabbing on about whoever is on the mound. When the Yankees are in the field heís blabbing on about how awesome the hitter is thatís up. He did the same damn thing in the Twins series. Drives me nuts. Although Iím probably biased and the Astros fans think the same thing so who knows
I'd never compare Kaat to Smoltz,IMO they're on different levels
TheMick7 : 10/19/2019 7:22 pm : link
when it comes to describing the game, knowing when to interject a nuance & telling what is right & wrong w/the game right now. Kaat does all that & more. Smoltz cannot speak w/o showing his biases on whatever or whoever he's talking about. Smoltz knows the game but doesn't do himself justice by how he goes about describing it!
I don't think Smoltz is a good in-game broadcaster
Matt M. : 10/19/2019 9:41 pm : link
But, he is extremely knowledgeable and a great listen in interviews, especially when talking about pitching.
Smoltz and his buddies
RasputinPrime : 10/20/2019 2:34 am : link
were the worst part of the series. I felt spoiled by Ruocco and Cone.
Smoltz never stops talking
moespree : 10/20/2019 10:43 am : link
I think it is clear he knows what he is talking about but he just never stops talking.
