Bye-Bye Until Next Year
Percy : 10/20/2019 8:48 am : link
Yankees gave us a great season. The better teams (e.g., Rays and Astros) revealed weaknesses in the Yankees, especially in team pitching (starters and a bullpen that turned out not to be as overwhelming as everyone had predicted), but also in team hitting -- they did not do as well in that department and do it as regularly as had been expected against some pretty ordinary pitching, pitching that, from teams that stocked very good pitchers, silenced and baffled them. Along the way, it must not be forgotten the Yankees had to and did overcome massive injuries to so many of their players that they could have filled more than a single hospital ward, finding people to fill in who were sensational surprises and proved to be great new contributors.

But in the end, the Astros were the better team. No two ways to say this. From top to bottom they were better. Last night's game, the one that turned out to be the Yankees' last for the season, started annoyingly. They gave up three runs in the first to the first few Astro batters and then, in their own halves of the first two innings, managed to leave five -- count 'em -- on base. Very discouraging. Demoralizing in the most crucial game yet played by the Yankees in this October. They did not recover until the ninth, when they excited all of us rooting for them in this frustrating contest by scoring two to tie it up. Great! New shot at it! Still alive! Only to have the Astros rip it away by doing the same thing in the last of the ninth, scoring two on a walk-off HR against our best closer, Chapman, to end the game.

Pretty incredible baseball drama! But we were on the losing end of it.

Big disappointment for the Yankees and their fans here and all over the globe. Now everything on and about the team will be criticized and, hopefully, redone offseason in ways that will enable it to do even better next year.

Grudging congrats must be given to the Astros team and its fans. They should be very proud and go on to win it all. We'll see you again next year.
It was a great season

haven’t had that much fun watching them since I was a kid. Very likable and very resilient club.

They will make some tweak and content again next year. The timely hits didn’t happen and that was the difference. A healthy Severino and Betances coming back are huge, something the trolls don’t realize or refuse to admit since the only way you can win apparently is to have 3 aces. Well, we had all 3 aces with their backs against the ball and even just 1 hit changes this series.

That’s baseball.
Will be rooting for the Nats for sure.

The Astros are enjoying the near-dynastic run that we were supposed to have. Their lineup has another 3 maybe 5 year run, but pitching is more uncertain. That overlaps with our core’s prime as well. Unfortunately I feel their coaching staff is better so we will have to outspend them. It starts with Cole.

Fun ride while it lasted

They were just overmatched. Please fix the pitching Cashman! Hopefully looking at the quality of starters in the WS will convince him.
Who do some people think Cashman
UConn4523 : 10/20/2019 9:27 am : link
doesn’t want another top arm? I really don’t get those comments. There isn’t anything to “fix” other than maybe injuries and suspensions which is what effected this series as well.

We lost because the players didn’t execute (mainly the lineup) when it mattered most.

Pitch is something that has happened to this team all year !

Altuve is a great hitter and one of the best if not the best in the game. Should have just walked him.

But!!!!!! This game and series did not come down to that last pitch.

Yankees had guys on in every inning and failed to rally . This series is on the lineup, not the pitching!!!

The fact that they almost got this to 7 games was incredible.

Yankees need to find more guys like DJL and less like Stanton/EE.
I thought Boone misused Green this whole series
DC Gmen Fan : 10/20/2019 9:48 am : link
should have started Happ and used green for critical relief.

Overmatched? Did we watch the same series? Were they swept, struck out 20 times in a game or non competitive? No they weren't. Did the Stros kick our pitchers asses and blow us away? Again no.

This series was nip and tuck, and it wasn't like they were dominated in any way. The Stros came through and made a few plays when they had the chances and the Yanks didn't make as many when they had theirs.

Pitching to Altuve in the bottom of the 9th inning with the score tied and two out in game 6 in the ALCS when you have somebody named Jake Marisnick up next.

That's some quality thinking right there Booney.

Well Vern couldn't reach your nuts...

But, he is their best player. Could care less about Bregman, Altuve is the guy that drives that team. If there was one guy that was going to beat them, it was Altuve. When Chapman has his usual one man brain fart with Springer, I knew Altuve would be trouble.

And for those wishing to walk Altuve, who walks the winning run to 2nd base...?
Who calls the pitches ??? The Yankee pitchers

Have been beaten like a drum with their secondary pitches all year long.

As soon as Altuve didn’t chase the fastball high and outside he should have been walked!!!

They follow analytics all year long !!! Can’t tell me the right call was to throw a slider down 2-1 in the count.

Another walk the winning run to 2nd base advocate...

Do you remember how devastating that slider for Chapman was all year and it was getting better every month? And I guess you forgot the 103 mph FB that Devers hit of Chapman that was at eye level and Devers is not, nor will he ever be, Altuve.

That's some quality thanking right there Booney.
Pitch around Altuve moves Springer into scoring position. I am sure that was the thinking. I think I would have taken my chances with Marisnick or a pinch hitter, but I can understand the logic.

Astros are a good team. Kind of interesting that in the year of HR, the two teams with 3 good starters made it to the WS.

When you have Jake Marisnick sitting on deck, and the count reached 2-0, you walk Altuce. I'll take my chances
with Marisnick. Chapman had lost his fastball command
against Springer, and walked him.
Maybe he rediscovers it against Jake the Snake, but
I am NOT letting Altuve beat me. The Yanks had no margin for error, don't pitch to him, case closed, sorry.
Then Chapman has that shit ass smile on his face, like WTF is that?

Turns out there were serious holes in the lineup
HomerJones45 : 10/20/2019 10:53 am : link
Edwin, Didi, and Gardner all turned out to be big holes in the lineup. Stanton was a hole by virtue of being a no-show. That's a big bat missing in a series where a run here or there would have made a big difference.

Oh, and Chapman never lost FB command mid-outing this season and then got it back next batter.

You're right man and I should know better by now. I'm usually one to let the little things in life just go by as you're right it's not worth it.

The thing is though, I love my teams and they've all been a part of the track of my life and sometimes I feel the need to defend like I would family and friends. I know it's not the same but in a way it kind of is to me.

I'm definitely going to work on ignoring more of those types of posts moving forward but it's a shame how for the most part these threads were pretty great all year. Then when we should be really into it and enjoying where they are, we get so many bullshit posts.

There were two posters who didn't say jackshit during the season who all of a sudden are on the game threads.

I don't know why they kept posting when the series was over after game 2....

It was sarcasm. He loses the zone often and regains it. You are not paying attention, so fixated on placing a man on second...and his slider was not unoften his best pitch. Whatever, it is not like Altuve can't hit a FB.

I was paying better attention than Booney, with his Skippy Magoo moment.
You walk Altuve, that's what I said above.
There were other reasons they lost the series,
as I said, when you are down 3-2 in the series,
can't let THAT guy beat you in that situation.
I stand by that feeling. I am sure a lot of people feel that way as well. No margin for error needs to change your approach in that situation.

Chapman threw his slider all year with excellent results. Unfortunately he threw a horrible one to the wrong guy. It was a fun regular season and the usual playoff results. Now we’ll see if Cashman will adjust or just keep doing the same thing over and over.
