Giants being this bad for so long can't be good for the NFL

Eric from BBI : Admin : 10/20/2019 5:38 pm
The Giants are too important to the League. The market is too big. The match-ups with the NFC East teams are too important.

This downfall for NYG is bad news for the NFL.
Don't
giants_10_88 : 10/20/2019 5:40 pm : link
people say the same thing about the Knicks and Rangers? Nobody actually cares.
I'm sure Goodell isn't happy that big market teams like the Giants,
Anakim : 10/20/2019 5:40 pm : link
Jets and Steelers are complete shit
Where's George Young?
Go Terps : 10/20/2019 5:40 pm : link
.
I think the bigger point here....
Tesla : 10/20/2019 5:41 pm : link
is that we are firmly entrenched as one of the worst teams in the league now.....not just for this year but for 3 years in a row. That's enough to consider us an inept franchise.

At some point the arrows need to start pointing at Mara. I seriously hope the league steps in and stops him from hiring Abrams as the next GM. Enough of the soft nepotism/sentimenatilty shit. It's not way to run a successful business.

3 years?
darren in pdx : 10/20/2019 5:42 pm : link
They've been bottom of the barrel since mid-2012..I believe Coughlin was the only thing keeping those teams from going 2 to 3 wins each of those seasons..
I don’t think it matters at all
Oscar : 10/20/2019 5:43 pm : link
If anything it’s ideal because New York will generate money automatically just because it’s a huge market. Better off having the smaller markets thrive because they’ll get a boost and everyone is watching other games anyway.

With modern technology and media coverage we are beyond location mattering at all. Chiefs and New Orleans are both from tiny little markets and they could easily play in a Super Bowl and break récords. Players can be national stars regardless of team/local market.

I also don’t think people nationally view the Giants the same way as the Yankees or Lakers or whatever. They aren’t a national, flagship franchise like Dallas, Green Bay, Pittsburgh. They’re old money NFL but not a top tier national team.
Bottom line
Emil : 10/20/2019 5:43 pm : link
You don’t a flag ship franchise in your biggest media market being continually lackluster

I think Eric’s got a good point.

Other than continuing to build the talent and finding a coach who is better at in game decisions, I’m not sure what else can be done. I like Schurmur as an offensive mind but he’s lost me on being able to call the plays and make the right decisions on a consistent basis. He needs to give one of those duties up and the owner should pressure him to do it.
no one cares
uther99 : 10/20/2019 5:44 pm : link
they are irrelevant
Let's not forget that Rozelle had to step in &
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 10/20/2019 5:44 pm : link
Give us George Young. Perhaps the Mara's suck at running a competent football organization?
Playing against Kingsbury
Coach Red Beaulieu : 10/20/2019 5:45 pm : link
was like playing against a well disciplined coached mistake free Coughlin team. A tremendous constrast to especially Giants O today, an absolute slopfest.
You want Goodell to step in
HomerJones45 : 10/20/2019 5:45 pm : link
and hand them another executive and tell the owners to butt out or they will be suspended like Rozelle did? Goodell doesn't have that kind of juice.
But it’s good news for Shurmur..
morrison40 : 10/20/2019 5:46 pm : link
Conducting losing press conferences with that damn smirk on his face is his forte!

Isn’t Chris Mara still the head of scouting?
The NFL doesn't need New York success.

Every market gets national attention.
I don’t know
MtDizzle : 10/20/2019 5:48 pm : link
about the NFL but I know it’s not good for my health I can tell you that. I’m numb to losing.
I don't give a flying screw job about the NFL.
Phil in Joisey : 10/20/2019 5:49 pm : link
The Giants being this bad for so long isn't good for ME and the rest of us loyal Giants fans.
Giants Cowboys
Coach Red Beaulieu : 10/20/2019 5:49 pm : link
were monstrous rating draws.

Ah at least we get to point and laugh at the Cowbois.
Would the NBA really be much better
CT Charlie : 10/20/2019 5:50 pm : link
if the Knicks had been good in this millennium? Seems like a NY-centric point of view.
I think its horrible for the league
Lines of Scrimmage : 10/20/2019 5:54 pm : link
Two things can change it.

1. Jones. Is he the answer? We all need to hope so.

2. Head Coach. This is the one who can change the whole culture imo. PS lost me in preseason. Is this team being prepared to win? Do they expect to win? What repercussions are there when they don't win?

I think we need a HC who becomes the face of the franchise.
Mara is an incompetent owner

So true
Jim in Fairfax : 10/20/2019 6:04 pm : link
The NFL might have become the elite American sports league in the 1970s If the Giants had been good then.
there may have been a time
bluepepper : 10/20/2019 6:13 pm : link
when the NFL or other sports leagues needed a good team in NYC but that time has long past. NY is just another town now.
As long as the Pats and Eagles are good,
81_Great_Dane : 10/20/2019 6:25 pm : link
the league is strong in the Northeast, so they're ok. That makes up for the Giants and Jets.

The Ravens are an interesting team on the rise. That makes up for Washington.

The league office would probably love it if the Giants would get their shit together and at least be competitive but I doubt the lousy NY teams are really hurting the NFL.
Years ago it would be true
micky : 10/20/2019 7:07 pm : link
But this day and age in sports ny market , or in this case giants, isn't as big as it has been for a struggling team. A lot new cities are catching up as far as ratings (smaller markets)

This. Overly conservative and refuse to adapt and innovate. Rest of the league has passed them by. Can’t be successful relying on nepotism and cronyism.
With gambling and FF...
bw in dc : 10/20/2019 7:50 pm : link
these down cycles for big markets like NYG are much less impactful.
I’ve been thinking this

the league
AndyMilligan : 10/20/2019 7:53 pm : link
doesn't care that much about the New York market anymore. They moved the draft. The Giants aren't as big to football as the Yankees are to baseball.
Why does that matter?
Mike from Ohio : 10/20/2019 8:08 pm : link
The tickets are sold and people are still watching. I think NY fans tend to overestimate the importance of New York teams to the leagues. The NBA is flourishing and the Knicks have been a joke for two decades. The Giants are coming up on a decade of futility and the league is fine.

I doubt anyone in the NFL offices really has any concern about how far the GIants franchise has fallen.

My feelings about the Mara family are more a result of the awful 1970s, when Wellington Mara was known more for his inept football decisions than his contributions to the league.
I don’t think it matters all that much
UConn4523 : 10/20/2019 9:25 pm : link
if it was the early 90s, sure. But fantasy sports and gambling have forced interest regardless of fandom.

They should be more like Snyder and the Redskins or the post Jimmy Johnson Cowboys.
Did the NFL care that the Giants stunk from 60's until the 80's ?
Ron from Ninerland : 10/20/2019 11:44 pm : link
Why should they care now ?
Why's it bad for the NFL?
jcn56 : 10/20/2019 11:50 pm : link
Will it cost the NFL money? I don't see how - they've managed to create secondary markets that they get a piece of, and since there are enough non-native NYers here when visiting teams come in their fans can pick up tickets to the game to fill up any slack. PSLs are already sold and people who bought them have to buy the tickets or lose them - it seems that gate revenue should be intact.

Fantasy football and gambling will ensure that there's still interest in even lopsided games. Do you know how many people I know that are not Giants or Cards fans that mentioned they'd be watching today because they had Murray or Barkley in their FF leagues?

It's not costing them dollars, and not costing them eyeballs. Mara is still raking in cash. Nobody is coming to save the Giants from themselves this time, and that's a damn shame.
They've been bad for some time now

Do you see the inherent irony imbued in the contrast between your handle and post?

Maybe you might consider a new handle?
