Defer

mattnyg05 : 10/20/2019 6:44 pm
Does it deserve its own thread? Probably not. Does it matter? Probably not because we suck anyway. Was not on the game threads and just logged on a minute ago... Does it infuriate anyone else that we constantly defer?

It just screams pussy Shurmur move to not take the ball and score right away. I feel like a good team always takes the ball and sets the tone. You can set a tone on defense but you’d have to have a good defense. What says you bbi? It’s obviously the least of our problems but it is still annoying.
No, not at all

I don't have a problem with it at all. It also sets the tempo if the defense shuts the offense down on the first series.
considering we are always behind in most football games

seems like we need more opportunities.
Pat believes in deferring victory

understand the rationale for it. Do any other coaches do this as much as Shurmur does?

I’ve never seen it done as automatically as he does it.
I'm on the fence

You want to come out aggressive and start by scoring. But if you're down at halftime, it's great to re-start by having the ball.
You cannot always defer

Last week vs NE the wind was terrible making it difficult to throw against
The team that had the wind at its back in the fourth quarter had a significant advantage
So what does Shurmur do, he defers and gives the wind advantage to NE
Then the Giants lose the game in the fourth quarter

Shurmur is an awful in game manager

Pats always do it!
problem is defense plays the biggest factor
mdc1 : 10/20/2019 6:57 pm : link
in much of this. guess he can blame the defense more allowing the lead. This guy reminds me of the older Mora in that he seems to play not to lose. not attacking.
Jesus people need to stop hitching about this, unless there is wind
Zeke's Alibi : 10/20/2019 6:59 pm : link
you should always defer. The momentum swing of going into half scoring and getting the ball is huge. The win percentage of teams that do this is higher than baseline.
I feel like you get Engram and Barkley back
mattnyg05 : 10/20/2019 7:01 pm : link
you absolutely don’t want to start down 7-0, whether you have faith in your defense or not. It doesn’t have to be every game but maybe the situation dictates a different move. Change it up.

Is it though? If a team gets the ball first and scores... what is their winning percentage? That is a misleading stat if it’s just “if a team gets the ball at the beginning of the first half and scores they have a higher win percentage” because... Of course! The problem is we give up the score and usually don’t score to open the half.
Deferring makes a lot of sence
Chris L. : 10/20/2019 7:11 pm : link
when you are an established winning team and/or have a good defense. We are/have neither. This team HAS to get off to a good start to get its confidence. Today was a great example of why we should not defer given our current fragile state.

What happens if you have a terrible defense?

In that scenario, the Giants are putting their worst unit on the field first to start the game and hoping they don't give it up. Problem is, they are, as expected.
It's grown on me

I like the prospect of having 2 straight possessions end of the first half and beginning of the second.

Pederson did it tonight for the first time in winning 33 coin tosses. Yes, for the most part it makes sense.
The forecastt was clear that it was going to start raining soon
Tesla : 10/20/2019 8:30 pm : link
So passing on taking the ball in the dry weather only to take it when it was almost guaranteed to be raining at start fo second half was truly idiotic.
I can't give a list, but I've seen a lot of teams do it. I think the

main advantage is having the wind at your back in the fourth quarter. To me it's 6 of 1 and half dozen of the other.
