RB Utilization by Shurmur

nygfaninorlando : 10/20/2019 8:40 pm
Granted it was Saquon’s first game back, but an on going issue with Shurmur is under using the best running back in the league. Not sure if Shurmur is trying to outsmart everyone, has too much on his plate during the games to effectively call plays or is just plain clueless. You drafted Barkley with the 2nd pIck in the draft, FREAKING use the guy. Cowboys first drive tonight, 4 of the first 6 plays go to Elliott, then an easy TD. Next possession, handoff Elliott another TD. Watch how the Panthers use McCaffrey, How the Saints use Kamala. Even Jacksonville gave 31 touches to Fournette. You have to get your best player the football. Did we even try to run Barkley wide today? Everything up the middle. Ok, rant over but just one of the many reasons Shurmur needs to go.
It isn't even just that.

There have been way too many games where he just abandons the running game and he is on record as saying sometimes you have to. The problem is he is too stupid to understand that when you are in the second quarter or even first quarter of a game it isn't time to abandon the run. I have no issue with not using Barkley that much today. You can tell he is still bothered by the ankle injury. However, the other RBs should have been used. This puts way too much pressure on an OL that isn't that great to begin with. DL and blitzer's only care about rushing the passer so it makes that much easier to do when you don't have to worry about the run. He feeds into the defense's hands.
We all love Barkley

but Shurmur's ridiculous play calling wastes what was already a luxury pick. He's not doing anyone any good when he doesn't have the ball in his hands.
It’s like watch a bad version of Andy Reid
Giantimistic : 10/20/2019 8:51 pm : link
With his game strategy.

Also, to the OPs point, we almost never run him wide. Everything is up the gut into a mess.

It was killing me watching the cardinals run wide—running plays the Giants should be running.
He is from the Andy Reid coaching tree
Ben in Tampa : 10/20/2019 8:55 pm : link
Bad clock management and negligent run game are hallmarks of Reid and his coaches
Dude never runs the ball twice in a row
Rflairr : 10/20/2019 8:57 pm : link
Even with a RB like Barkley

A garbage very awful version of Andy Reid. He is a terrible coach.
Barkley
Marty866b : 10/20/2019 9:57 pm : link
Wasn't getting much done either. He looked to be about 75% when he wasn't hobbling and the line gave him very little room to run. Opposing teams load the box to stop him because they don't have any respect for our receivers in the passing game.
Running
Archer : 10/20/2019 10:18 pm : link
Is it possible to be creative with the running game?
Barkley’s runs with one exception were between the tackles
There was minimal miss direction it was power running
To further compound the problem everyone new that the Giants were going to run on first down
So Arizona sold out and stopped the run

The other issue I have is last year Barkley caught 8-10 passes a game
He was split out and he created mismatches
I have not seen one wheel route this year
Barkley catching passes can open up the run game
Barkley can’t block
Vanzetti : 10/21/2019 12:53 am : link
So whenever he is in the defense is going to blitz like crazy.

Barkley might help the run game but he hurts the passing game big time

Until that improves, Barkley will be great individually but he won’t make the team better

I don't disagree that he needs to improve but it's not like every good RB has been a pass protector. I can't image Sproles or players of his ilk were, but they are still used to their strengths, even if scheme helps

Why can't NYG use Penney or Ellison in the backfield w/ SB to mitigate the issue? Or quick throws to him? (Even some built in 1 read plays for DJ when pressure is getting home?) SB is too good even individually to not be a net positive for the team many games even w/ his weaknesses. But no doubt the coaching / scheme still has to help. Yet what happened to using a QB's athleticism if only on roll outs, read options, a few runs just for the threat? Vs the predictable G-C-G runs on 1st...only helps the D really

Tbf, it happens to many RBs. Aaron Jones fans have said similar. DFreeman often underutilized if only in the pass game, save in catchup mode. Why wait to have him do something he's great at? Or Andy Reid, who'd I'd thank for suddenly forgetting about Westbrook in the RZ after he'd terrorize NYG's D the whole drive til then...

I swear during the course of the game I said the exact same thing. He learned all of the bad lessons from Andy Reid with none of the good ones. After Barkley's best run of the game (21 yards) with a RB, FB, 1 TE, and 2 WRs personnel on the field, what do the Giants do? 3 straight passes out of shotgun.

Wayne Gallman has a nice, physical 9 yard run (that was called back for a penalty). Well guess what, you're never going to see him again.

Thinking back to the game at Philly last year, it's as if Shurmur has zero feel for what's happening in a game. If something works, say goodbye to it. If they run the ball well, time for 5 straight passes, etc.
We all question why Gallman plays...
Kanavis : 10/21/2019 6:20 am : link
When Barkley is healthy. Yesterday Barkley clearly wasn't 100 percent. And yet Gallman gets almost nothing. Shurmur is clueless. I know Barkley is great RB. But if watching all sorts of RBs tear it up (including a second stringer against us) doesn't make you think a RB as a 2nd pick is a luxury.... Then I don't know what to tell you.
Seems they hardly practice runs
idiotsavant : 10/21/2019 6:27 am : link
No outside zone.

Outside zone boy shanny is 6-0.

I was thinking that same thing during the game, there is zero creativity in getting the ball to SB in space where he is best.
I also feel
mdthedream : 10/21/2019 9:09 am : link
Gallman should see 8 carries a game and catch a couple of passes. I don't think we are using our weapons well. Also Why doesn't he send Barkley out wide as a receiver get him on LBs and miss matches. Play Gallmen and Barkley at the same time once in a while.
LOL!
mdthedream : 10/21/2019 9:10 am : link
sorry about that was thinking the samething.
Barkley would touch the ball more if
Jimmy Googs : 10/21/2019 9:14 am : link
they converted more 3rd downs.

Simply said...more difficult to execute obviously with our O-line and dropped balls.
They ran 47 pass plays and 18 running plays
Eli Wilson : 10/21/2019 10:02 am : link
Not including penalties.

Jones threw it 35 times, scrambled 4 times and was sacked 8 times.

There needs to be way more balance, especially when the best offensive player is the RB.
