Breaking down some of Pat Shurmur’s questionable game management decisions versus the Cardinals

Duggan on The Athletic

Quote:
Coaches entered the week four of 37 on pass interference challenges, according to ESPN. Shurmur is 0 for 4, but has no plans to change his approach.

“I guess I am going to continue to do it,” Shurmur said. “I know they are getting overturned at a low percentage, but I felt like there was a push there and it was a big chunk of yardage. It was in the first half, and I felt like it was worth challenging at that point.”

What nonsense this new challenge is
BestFeature : 10/20/2019 9:20 pm : link
It's making a complete mockery of the sport. Either you can overturn it or you can't. If you have it on the books actually overturn the calls once in a while.
So he is going to stick with something despite being wrong about it?

That’s special for him. Most coaches learn and adapt. Glad to see Shurmur adamantly bucking that trend!

That rule needs to be wiped out. What other league actually announces that the goal of replay is not to get it right, but just fix the most appalling of mistakes while admittedly allowing other mistakes to stand?
I think the key point to understand
mdc1 : 10/20/2019 9:32 pm : link
is that the NFL is warning you that it is an impotent challenge and it will generally not work. If you are smart you will read through their corruption and realize that they created this arrangement as a prop to cover for their corruption in that Saints fiasco last season. The TV networks sell this caution too.

NFL were exposed so they had to do something, but that something will not give any coach or team control over their decisions. This is a business and I believe they (NFL) really wanted the Rams in the SB. That owner is pretty wealthy and needed to be rewarded for dumping St Louis and moving to LA.
the NFL does not look good with this approach
markky : 10/20/2019 9:41 pm : link
I think they are a bit out of touch with what a turn off this is for the fans. I can't believe the shit isn't hitting the fan over this but I guess it's not. it's honestly perplexing.
It is a simple solution
mdthedream : 10/21/2019 6:28 am : link
just like they do at the end of the game have someone in the booth stop the game and review it. Of course it would have to be obvious pass interference. No the coach throws the flag and you lose a timeout. Great solution screw the team of a time out because the Refs suck.
I’m becoming less and less of a Shurmur fan

But losing challenges is not an issue for me. He has been right on just about every one. And what’s he losing? His right to make another challenge that probably won’t be successful? Who cares.
The way the the officials
Dnew15 : 10/21/2019 7:56 am : link
are viewing this PI challenge nonsense is stupid. The record of overturned PI calls makes you wonder if they would have even overturned the PI call in the NFC championship game last year...which is why this whole thing came about.
If his past two challenges
section125 : 10/21/2019 8:10 am : link
were not overturned then unless a DB comes out and tackles to the ground a WR nothing will be overturned.

He is stubborn, even if he is correct. Yesterday was worth the challenge. That was clearly egregious.

It is clear the officials are thumbing their noses at the league and rules committee. Riveron should be fired as a warning, but Goodell is spineless.

But Shurmur should not bother anymore, it is a waste of our time and timeout.

You know, the past several weeks I'm on board with Shurmur not being the right guy for us, but I keep saying that I'm glad he's making those challenges.

If only to have the refs come out and deny an actual bad call happened. When they finally do reverse one - they are going to look ridiculous. Well, even moreso than now.

The worst part is he's been right about every one of those calls being horseshit. And he's lost them. at least it had chatter about the one in NE.
agreed
LG in NYC : 10/21/2019 8:26 am : link
this guy can't be gone quick enough for me, but challenging bad calls is not high on my list of complaints.
I said that on the ref thread, but there is going to be a fucking
Zeke's Alibi : 10/21/2019 9:17 am : link
uproar when they overturn one in the playoffs. You can almost sense it coming. Imagine them not overturning that in a playoff game? People would go apoplectic.
And if they do people will still go apoplectic because of the utter
Zeke's Alibi : 10/21/2019 9:20 am : link
lack of consistency. They should have just scrapped it at the owners meeting if this is the way they want to handle it. They are setting themselves up for failure. I never been of those guys as I love football and figured they could fuck it up royally and I still watch, but I didn't even finish the game last night and it was Philly Dallas. I just saw too much bullshit reffing all day and was burnt out.
I think the most notable thing coming out of this
Mike from Ohio : 10/21/2019 11:37 am : link
Is that for the first time, the NFL has admitted that they are using replay for things other than trying to get the call right. They have admitted they are not reviewing to see if a call should or should not have been made, they are reviewing to protect the reputations of the referees.

Replay itself can be good if used like they do in the college game to simply confirm or change missed calls. The NFL is very adamant that they don't view replay the same way. It's more of a game show feature.

Completely agree. Just because the system is rigged, you shouldn't give into it if you know you're in the right.
Shurmur not an Alpha
Thegratefulhead : 10/21/2019 12:27 pm : link
He just is not the type of person to command respect. Player's coaches can work, cerebral coaches can work. If you rely on the latter you have to give your team a schematic advantage on game day that translates into success. Without that, I think you inevitably lose the team, adult or not. Time is running out.
