I read an article about this in JAMA in the mid 90's.

I don't know why the NFL gets crucified and soccer gets a free pass?

People always say this I don’t know why. NFL willingly and actively tried sweeping this under the rug when the research was presented to them. They deserve every ounce of criticism they get. Soccer is at best the 4th most popular US sport, less people care about it so naturally less people will take that research seriously. However, they already started implemented non-heading rules for kids under 11 and limited heading up to age 13 or 14 I believe. I’m not sure what more can be done other than banning them all together but progress has been made regardless.
Soccer is the most popular sport in the world.

The rules on heading and the protective gear worn hasn't changed at the adult level at all despite the dangers being well known for a long time. UConn, I'm not sure why you're defending soccer. They should ban heading or require some form of helmet.
you asked why football gets

crucified and I gave you the reason. Soccer has also changed its rules at the youth level (this isn't insignificant) so they have actually done something - no idea why you think they get a free pass.

And asking Soccer to completely remove heading the ball changes the sport dramatically. Boxers, MMA fighters, football players etc. all know the risks associated with their sports, Soccer is no different. And heading the ball is optional, you don't have to do it ever if you don't want to.

yup. Remember clearly taking a number from sky-high punts off the back of the noggin' and experiencing some real wooziness. Not to mention the head-to-head hits when going up for the ball. Kids aren't coached up on this stuff until they've already knocked a few points the SAT already - at least back in the 80's/90's.
Started playing rec soccer in my early 30s after not playing for 20.

Opposing GK punts the ball downfield. I'm playing CB and our mid is free 10 yards in front. Figure I'll head it to him no problem. I had forgotten the kind of impact those headers cause.

I feel a crunch in my neck and am immediately dizzy. Kneel down for a few seconds, look up and start seeing stars.

Refused to ever use my head again after that concussion.
