If there were a coaching change

djstat : 10/21/2019 11:28 am
At the end of the year, aside from Bill Belichik, who would you want to see be HC? What type of coach? Suggest only coaches who would be available and not coaches you’d have to trade compensation for.

Who would you want and why?

If you think you know who you’d want said candidate to bring as OC and DC feel free to share.

I don’t think John Mars will make a change but who knows. I personally think Shurmer is a decent OC and a lousy HC. Like Norv Turner type person.

im usually not the thread police but

I don't know..

if I will want what I wish for, but I'd like to get a defensive-minded HC who is young and brings a lot of energy. But, I don't want to chase the next Sean McVay or I'd fear we'd end up with Zac Taylor so the young, offensive guy is a crapshoot.

I would prefer to not have a retread or a Pats assistant either.

If we really want to go out of the box, give me Dino Babers.....

Yep
I'll echo Fats here

A strong defensive coach. No Patriots coordinators.
I'd take a good look at Mike McCarthy
Mike in Long Beach : 10/21/2019 11:34 am : link
He's still only 55 years old, so he's not a dinosaur, yet has the experience and pedigree to handle New York. In a 12 year career in Green Bay he only finished less than 2nd twice (6 division championships). He won a superbowl and has a winning record in both the regular season and the postseason. He was let go because of a poor relationship with his quarterback - not an inability to coach. I think he'd be great for Daniel Jones.
McCarthy's..
FatMan in Charlotte : 10/21/2019 11:36 am : link
QB covered up a lot of his coaching issues.

I don't want any part of him.

There were rumors for many years about his coaching abilities. and they weren't just being started by Rodgers.

Curious(nothing more), would you have been ok with Patricia?
I..
FatMan in Charlotte : 10/21/2019 11:45 am : link
wouldn't have been. Pats coordinators are a big no from me
No, I didn't want Patricia
Greg from LI : 10/21/2019 11:46 am : link
Bill Belichick runs the Patriots' defense. Their DCs have been mere figureheads.

The only Patriots coach I'd want is the man himself.
A couple of former players..
Chris684 : 10/21/2019 11:47 am : link
Chase Blackburn and Dan Campbell.

I find both very intriguing.
No idea at this point.
Johnny5 : 10/21/2019 11:49 am : link
I really wanted Shurmur to be the guy.

I was on the Babers train for awhile but he’s been rough this year.

I’d drop the bag on Lincoln Riley
Probably a pipe dream

but I'd see if those rumors about Saban supposedly wanting NY badly were true.
I don’t know what the hell I’m talking about
Oscar : 10/21/2019 12:06 pm : link
With that said I would bring Matt Rhule in for an interview.
What about

Not a chance on Meyer.

Saban isn't leaving. And he's 66/67 y/o.

Why Not Matt Eberflus?

You don't hear about him because people don't talk about the Colts, but he did a great job with the Cowboys and the Colts, and deserves a close look, especially if you want a Defensive guy:

not make it through the bye week. If worse case scenario occurs and the Giants are 2-8 at the bye, why keep him around? Start your coaching search earlier than others. Everyone threw Eli under the bus for being the problem, Jones has played 5 games and the issues are the same as the first 2 games. Its clear that the HC does not have a feel for the game. He lacks creativity and shrinks in the pressure of the press.

He didn't go for it on 4th and 3 vs the Pats and he got mocked, yesterday he goes for it on 4th and 15 instead of punting for field position and he's taking heat. His post game presser is pathetic.

I'd personally like someone younger with energy and vision. Someone like McVay or Kingsbury
We need to stop looking for a type
Biteymax22 : 10/21/2019 1:44 pm : link
We wound up with Ben McAdoo because ownership was looking for something different than Coughlin

Then wound up with Shurmur because they were looking for different than McAdoo

How about we just pick the best candidate next time and not worry about what "type" they are...

I used to think this:

Now, I'm not so sure. If the Giants' season stays on the course it's currently on and they finish with 4 wins, I think Gettleman is able to convince Mara that a coaching change is necessary. Gettleman is invested here too, and because he was suggested to Mara by Accorsi, I'm sure his arguments that Shurmur is holding preventing his roster from realizing its potential will be heeded.
and to answer your question
santacruzom : 10/21/2019 2:10 pm : link
I still want Robert Saleh, the 9ers coordinator.
If Belichick is

the GOAT head coach, shouldn't we be able to see a bunch of players and coaches that have learned a lot from their experience with Bill? It seems like the info BB knows does not impart wisdom to anyone who serves under him. Very strange.
An innovative college HC

or a young NFL assistant first timer who can run an entire organization. No retreads, no Pats guys, no 2019 Super Bowl/Championship game OCs or DCs.

The NFL is as bad at identifying good HCs as they are at drafting players. It's not easy to find the right guy. But it's easy to see the Giants don't have him now. Another year is just going to make it worse.

Needless to say, that's EXTREMELY risky and very un-Giants-like. If that's what you want, the first name that comes to mind is Kellen Moore.
I think...
FatMan in Charlotte : 10/21/2019 2:46 pm : link
we'll see that Kingsbury doesn't have great vision.

He has a gimmicky offense and not a very good one, to boot.

I’d definitely be interested
I am torn between an offensive or defensive minded coach for HC
Jay on the Island : 10/21/2019 8:25 pm : link
Either way it is very important that they bring in a very good OC. I would target Jay Gruden as OC and Bill Callahan as the OL coach.

Kris Richard is one of the DC's I like as a potential option for HC especially if he brings Rod Marinelli over as his DC. Jason Garrett is more than likely going to be fired at season's end. That would free up his staff and the Giants would be crazy not to make a run at Marinelli. Marinelli has done a masterful job in Dallas.

Honestly the only coach I would want retained is Thomas McGaughey. He's done a very good job here, the special teams have been better than any season under Quinn.

He was my first choice before Shurmur and would be my first choice after.

The guy would cure a lot of ills.
