NFT: Help! Wife had her identity stolen

Vin_Cuccs : 10/21/2019 8:33 pm
So my wife got a new credit card from Pier 1 in the mail today that she never ordered. Hadn’t been in the store in years. She called the company and they told her someone opened and account with her correct date of birth, home address, maiden name, and social security number, and ran up a bill for $2,000 a few days ago.

The employee at Pier 1 credit said this looks like a classic case of identity theft, and to call the credit bureaus and local police.

Has this happened to anyone else?

What steps should she take?

How can she prevent this from happening again?

Should I be concerned or take any preemptive steps?
If you give me her

Follow these steps
1 file a police report. It’s required by the co pant
2 log into her credit report to see UCF there are any other fraud accounts to or charges
3 put an alert on all 3 reporting bureaus maybe a freeze for 3 months
4 sign up for credit Monoriting.
5 keep an eye on all your accounts (bank, credit etc)

That’s all you can do.
call one or more of the credit bureaus and put a freeze

on your credit. you can remove the freeze any time you need to. that way nobody can open a new card, get a loan, etc., in your name.

also, you're not responsible for the credit card charges. by law you are only responsible for $50, so not a disaster. the credit card companies are getting very good cat identifying fraud as well.

You need to call
section125 : 10/21/2019 8:45 pm : link
all your credit card companies, banks, financial institutions, Police for certain. Maybe the IRS. Cancel all your cards and get new ones.

Your credit card companies may actually help you with reporting this.
Don’t be hasty

Find out what the thief looks like. Might be a good trade.
Thanks all.

You need to opt out of the Equifax class action settlement (follow the rules) and keep proof that you opted out.

how does Pier 1 let someone open a account without looking at there license? You got the card so it had to be a in store account added.
Lock her credit

Alerts won’t help! Follow up with a police report the rest of the list above.
Good luck!
