So my wife got a new credit card from Pier 1 in the mail today that she never ordered. Hadn’t been in the store in years. She called the company and they told her someone opened and account with her correct date of birth, home address, maiden name, and social security number, and ran up a bill for $2,000 a few days ago.
The employee at Pier 1 credit said this looks like a classic case of identity theft, and to call the credit bureaus and local police.
Has this happened to anyone else?
What steps should she take?
How can she prevent this from happening again?
Should I be concerned or take any preemptive steps?
😂
1 file a police report. It’s required by the co pant
2 log into her credit report to see UCF there are any other fraud accounts to or charges
3 put an alert on all 3 reporting bureaus maybe a freeze for 3 months
4 sign up for credit Monoriting.
5 keep an eye on all your accounts (bank, credit etc)
That’s all you can do.
also, you're not responsible for the credit card charges. by law you are only responsible for $50, so not a disaster. the credit card companies are getting very good cat identifying fraud as well.
Your credit card companies may actually help you with reporting this.
Good luck!
