2006 Vibes

NorthCountryGiantsFan : 10/22/2019 4:09 pm
Hi everybody....1st time poster, 15 year lurker! Go easy on me!

Who else is getting the 2006 vibe? After 3 years of Coughlin the pitchforks were out. I was definitely in that group. I had seen enough out of a coach I didn't want hired in the first place. He seemed too old school, couldn't relate to today's players, left Jax a mess, and the team always folded when they had a chance to succeed. Ownership saw differently, and changes were made at DC and OC. The rest is history. I was actually happy with the Shurmur hire, and in general, happy with the teams level of "fire" over the past season and a half. They definitely aren't folding from an overall lack of trying (some individual efforts notwithstanding). There hasn't been 1 game all season where all of the Offensive pieces have been available, and on the D side, our 1st competent ILB in ages is on the shelf...tough to overcome. That said, it will end up being a tough year, and like 2006, I believe changes will be forced. Instead of discussing HC changes, who's out there for DC and OC possibilities that have ties to Shurmur/Gettleman? That's what I really feel is in play for next year, along with possibly strongarming Shurmur out of playcalling. Thoughts???
Shurmur can't hold Coughlin's jock, that's my thought.

The 06 team had serious talent.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 10/22/2019 4:11 pm : link
This team doesn't.
They went 11-5 in 2005
Greg from LI : 10/22/2019 4:13 pm : link
It's not anywhere near the same situation. 2006, they had Strahan, Osi, Tuck, Pierce, Burress, Toomer, Shockey, and a much, much better OL. That team had exponentially more talent than this team.
No.
MtDizzle : 10/22/2019 4:14 pm : link
Just no. 2006 had far superior talent and coaching. Not to mention coming off a division winning season in 2005. The nucleus for our championships had already been in place.
Eh
BleedBlue : 10/22/2019 4:17 pm : link
Not sure about the comparison it this years team has been seriously hindered by injury.

I'm not too worried. Get healthy add more talent, we should be better next year
Welcome!
TyreeHelmet : 10/22/2019 4:19 pm : link
But no I don't see any similarities. Throwing out Coughlin's expansion first year with Jax, Coughlins worst year of 6-10 is something Shurmur has never accomplished.

Coughlin is a far far superior coach to Shurmur.

Part of the issue with those teams were they had A LOT of talent. It could be maddening how sloppy they played. But then it came together in 2007.

This current crop is not nearly the same.
Welcome!

I'm feeling more 2017 or 2003 vibes though. A team that's about to quit on its coach and implode.
Coughlin had success in Jax
LawrenceTaylor56 : 10/22/2019 4:25 pm : link
Shurmur hasn’t.
In 2006 we had a major injury bug hit the team
Rjanyg : 10/22/2019 4:36 pm : link
Kiwi was our only healthy DE for a few games and he was a rookie. Strahan, Tuck and Osi all missed some time and we just couldn't stop people.

This team has had injuries but we are just a young, poorly coached team. Big difference.
i'm getting more

Nice to have you posting NCGF

Hold this thought for a year and repost if Shurmur is still here!

Why did bbi want Coughlin to get ass canned?

I would sell my own father to the Chinese to be where the Giants were in 2006 in 2019.

By the way, I'm getting "every year since 2013, except for 2016" vibes from this team.

The 06 team had talent and underachieved
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/22/2019 6:02 pm : link
There isn't a comparison to be made here. Who's the strahan of 2006? Where's the Osi Umenyiora? Where's the Plaxico Burress?
Where's the excellent offensive line?

I don't see 2006.... or 2003.

2004 is probably the only season in recent memory that I think is even really at all comparable.
I think the closest comp is 2017
Go Terps : 10/22/2019 6:37 pm : link
The only question is whether we blow it up after the season.
Some 2006 memories:
ray in arlington : 10/22/2019 7:38 pm : link
-First Eli-Peyton matchup (ind wins 26-21)
-Giant comeback from 7-24 to win in OT at Philly
-Down 42-3 in SEA, giants score 27 unanswered to lose 42-30.
-Tony Romo replacing Drew Bledsoe.
-Devin Hester returning a FG 108 yards.
-Blowing 21-0 lead in the 4th Q to TEN, including Kiwanuka (?) holding up to avoid roughing Vince Young
-Beating WAS in last game to finish in a 4-way tie at 8-8. --Giants won the tiebreak on strength of victory.
-Tying PHI in the wild card game at 20 with 5 min to play, but
Garcia and Westbrook lead a drive that ends with a FG with no time on the clock.
I used 2006
NorthCountryGiantsFan : 10/22/2019 7:38 pm : link
as an example because of the level of anger directed at the head coach, and also how I think the offseason will go. Coughlin had given 3 frustrating years with a talented roster, but was given another chance after making changes to his coaching staff...rest is history. I believe Shurmur will be back, mostly because he has shown he can keep the team playing hard and mostly to its talent level. I also believe he will be asked to make changes to his staff in the offseason, ala Coughlin in 2006. Hopefully history repeats itself and we add a couple more pieces and Shurmur starts putting it together next year.

Exactly. Coughlin had just come off an 11-5 season AND he had a history of winning in Jacksonville. Shurmur has a 17-39 career record as HC. Shurmur is nowhere near the “Leader of Men” that Coughlin was (and neither was McAdoo) and that’s the fundamental intangible aspect you need to look for in an NFL HC in my opinion! Their job requires so much responsibility of managing all the strong personality types of players, staff, even media people to an extent, etc. and so much more than just play calling. That’s why we need a guy who’s actually had success as an NFL coach and has the balls to take on NY players and media and not blink. We can’t just hire a guy because he was an above average offensive coordinator somewhere.

One of the most painful seasons I've ever experienced as a fan. Just brutal. I was shell-shocked after that season.
The Saints game the offense never had an offensive play

just a miserable loss
A piece of 2006 trivia
ray in arlington : 10/23/2019 1:22 am : link
in the first game of the year, Eli's last pass was defensed by a rookie safety playing for the Colts.... Antoine Bethea.
Giants made the playoffs in 2006 and had 3 OL injured
Youtoo : 10/23/2019 5:00 pm : link
Giants lost 3 offensive line starts for the year and had other injuries. Still made the playoffs. They won 10 games the year before and made the playoffs. They lost in the playoffs bad in 2005 because

2 OL out
Ahmani toomer out
6 linebackers out. They had 3 guys they signed off the street
best cornerback and his backup.

Still won 10 games. This is not comparable.
In a sense
Sneakers O'toole : 10/23/2019 5:14 pm : link
At least on the fan reaction side. I think the talk here is premature to be so intense .
