“He was kind of the inventor of tight coverage,” Madden told The Chronicle. “He was one of the first guys, if not the first guy, that ever used it - and he did it better than anyone else. He would just get on top of the receiver and play him all the way down the field.”
In his 16 years, Brown had 54 regular-season interceptions. Sometimes, Madden said, Brown would let a receiver “get a step or two on him, just to invite the quarterback to throw it to him, just to get some action.”
“He loved the game,” Madden said. “And he made not only our defensive backs better but our whole team better, our receivers better, because he wouldn’t give an inch to anyone. Some of the biggest battles we’d ever have on the practice field were our receivers going against Willie Brown because he had so much pride … As a coach, you love that.”
When I think of Oakland's iconic CBs I think of Willie Brown and Lester Hayes.
There were other great CBs that played for Oakland (who may have been better players - Mike Haynes, Charles Woodson, etc ...) but, those 2 stick out immediately in my mind.
RIP
i sat next to him at a college basketball game once Â

Well, if I'm not mistaken, both Brown and Hayes played their entire careers for the Raiders, while Haynes started with the Patriots and Woodson went to the Packers.
I remember that NFL films highlight of that Vikes Raiders.

Exactly what I thought.
And Greg is right, the film of him returning that SB INT, with his helmet literally moving on his head, is classic.
