are we looking for tonight? A win obviously, but let's state the obvious and say that doesn't happen:
1. Is Shurmur capable of coaching a good, clean game with this roster? Methinks no, hoping to see some improvement with the coaching at any point here
2. Jones on the national stage vs Cowboys..let's see if he's up to task
3. Can we get Barkley involved early and sustain some long drives? Dallas seems to always have these 6-8 minute drives against us early...let's try and match that
4. Defense defense...looking forward to seeing Williams out there getting significant snaps.
will most likely do something stupid in desperation like he always does. Like go for it on a 4th down when he should punt, or punt when he should go for it. Or go for 2 way too early when he doesnt have to.
may apply to one game out of 12-16.:i think Monday night is different with some teams dominating Monday wins, and others losing in national games more frequently. I think, but havent done the stats that the Cowboys fall into the first over their history, and the Giants into the Second,
Given that, and with looking at our beloved giants team from coaching staff through all the players, our giants have little chance to win. I wonder if rookie qbs have ever won on a Monday night or national game? So giants should lose and given our secondary, should not cover.
only meeting turned out to be like most of our game plans- we talked about it, we set it up and then did nothing with it.
You know, thinking about it, the Giants don't really have any player leaders on this team anymore. There's not much leading Eli can do from the bench and even though Saquon and DJ seem wise beyond their years, they don't have any experience in the trenches. Nobody on the O-line that I can think of, nobody on the defense. Who are the player leaders on this team?
I hate these night games...just too late...midnight before getting to
bed. But I echo an earlier comment that I hope the game is competitive.
To me, this is the beginning of the evaluation of Shurmur and Bettcher...and I will be focusing on that. Are we getting better and is DJ continuing to improve?
Obviously, I would love to see us beat the obnoxious Cowboys and I hope and pray that they do but I am certainly not expecting it.
Our db's were nowhere near the wr's on multiple occasions.
My hope is that the secondary tightens up.
Perhaps it is just my delusional glass half full observation - but the past couple of weeks Baker seems a lot closer to the guy he is supposed to cover as opposed to running five yards behind him like the first couple of games.
Tighten up a bit more and we might have something.
Safeties are still way out of position too much
And then there is Amari Cooper... Hopeully Jackrabbit will be a bit closer this time...
The Cowboys scored on five or six straight drives in the first game
at 2-6, even after the way the past 8 years have gone and on the heels of a 4 game losing streak, I am still going into this game with the internal narrative of "If they win this game and the Jets game, they'll be in striking distance for the division going into the bye week." Dallas is the far better team, we just have to hope to contain Elliott and hope that the secondary can keep Cooper and Gallup, not to mention our old nemesis Witten and our modern day nemesis Jarwin, in check. The biggest source of hope that I have is that the pass rush, while not exceptional, has shown improvement since week 1. If they can force Dak into a few mistakes and end a few drives on sacks, this will be a winnable game.
sadly the script for this team has been the same since we played the Cowboys the 1st time. The defense hasnt shown up in the 1st quarter. Its like every team has early success and we have to play catch up.
I dont see us getting a win, we just dont have any legit top players yet. teams line up and do what they want on O. we have a lot of young players and they just dont know what it takes to win yet and we have very few vets who can show them the way.
I hope for a good competitive game and think we will continue to show some bright spots but the Cowboys are the better team right now and its not close.
RE: I don't see this defense consistently competing
poor (but building) teams get. At home, Monday night, against a hated rival, the players don't want to be embarrassed and the Cowboys are frankly overrated.
but they were missing their Oline that day. I am not sure what to expect with this team. I kind of hope they turn it up a bit and go hurry up, no huddle and make Dallas's defense stay in base for long stretches.
I think the offense could be good enough to pull off an upset but it's hard to imagine the defense being competitive.
I agree with you in general. But on the thursday night againt the Pats I felt like the D had their best game against an actual team even though we got thumped. If that D shows up we have a chance.
either they get completely blown out again or they get down three scores early, come back within one score and cant finish the deal or they tie/take a one-point lead and lose in the final seconds.
they should be able to move the ball. Dallas' defense isn't that good this season. Leighton Vander esch isn't supposed to play. Then it becomes a matter of red zone offense, which doesn't seem to be a Pat Shurmur strength.
The defense OTOH is a major issue. I expect that they'll slow down Zeke initially, but why should we have any faith in the pass defense? Baker is playing 1,000% better than in week 1, yet receivers still get open behind the defense due to the safeties and slot corner. Dak has killed the Giants. Bettcher's soft 3rd down defenses are horrific. The Cowturds are rested and the OL is relatively healthy.
TBH, IDGAF about anything other than Daniel Jones playing well and staying healthy.
Giants have given no indication at all that they can stop anyone
defensively and the Cowboys have one of the best offenses in the league. I expect Dak to have all night to pass the ball and Grant Haley to continue getting torched out of the slot.
Robert Quinn is playing out of his mind and Nate Solder looks like shit again. The turnover-prone Daniel Jones is in for a long night against this pass rush.
Gonna be ugly.
Giants 14
Cowboys 38
I have feelings that this is going to be shit show tonight

Cowboys offense is leaps and bounds better than the Pats O. Especially the O-line
Again, and I think we actually lose by more than week 1. Kris Richard and Marinelli will confuse and harass Daniel Jones into game killing turnovers and we will not do much offensively. Defensively, we still get gashed no matter what a team tries, passing or running. We have to totally commit to stopping one phase that whatever we choose to stop, the opponent simply counters and dumbass Bettcher does nothing. We trot out 7 DBs against the Cards and they see it and proceed to ram it down our throats. So we go bigger against the Lions and shock of all shocks they torch us passing. Everything is easy against this historically embarrassing defense. It's honestly sickening.
Dallas 42
Giants 10
I just don't see us keeping the Cowboys off the board...
I loved that 1997 Giants D. When you have a D like that you have a shot every week. This team obviously doesn't.
It's a bumbling error prone offense featuring a rookie QB taking his lumps combined with a non-competitive D. I agree with Joey in VA right above - no chance. This will go similar to the Vikings game IMO. Never really a contest.

All signs point to that, can't argue...
However, the Cowboys were 7 point favorites a few weeks ago in this building as well, and lost to the Jets.
I've just completely soured on Shurmur. I fully expect to come out in Shotgun with a rookie QB and a run blocking OL, winging the ball all over the place against an excellent D.
And Bettcher will be exactly as described above. Basically we'll look cluelessly outcoached on both sides of the ball. I supported both of these guys when hired but not anymore.
Cowboys get up early due to Giants defense nonexistent on 3rd down and some Giants miscues (blown assignments or turnovers).
Giants claw back a bit in the first half and make it somewhat competitive at half time.
Dallas pulls away in the 2nd half.
Shurmur says we have to clean it up.
This is how I have it mapped out in my head and why I will probably fall asleep at halftime, wake up in the morning and see the exact highlights of the loss that I expected to see.
Hopefully I'm wrong.
Expect Witten to score another TD against his favorite team
Cowboys should win by about 17 points in front of their home crowd. Thats what makes this game sickening. Expect to see Jerry Jones mug several times during the broadcast.
I am not sure how much of a difference they will make but it has to be an improvement. Baker is a better player since that game no doubt. This game will come down to executing a game plan on offense. You want to score but you also want to keep it away from Dallas. Let's see if Shurmur gets Barkley involved in both the run and pass game and helps protect Jones.
That is the key to the game IMO.

Yeah, maybe Shurmur will run SB up the gut for two on first down like he did against Snacks repeatedly in the Lions game, BRILLIANT!!!!!
I just want Dallas make it look difficult to convert 3rd and 17 against us. A perfect pass or something, not the guy is so open you could pass it to him underhanded and lobbed and still complete the pass.
On offense I would like Barkley to touch the ball at least 30 times. Don't care how, but that guy should have the ball. No turnovers...none. Limit penalties PLEASE.
Hope is all we have. We haven't changed anything to expect a different result. Haley trails receivers by two yards or more consistently. Bethea and Thomas have no footspeed to help the deep boundary or run with players crossing. Chandler and Hamilton are the walking embodiment of the term JAG.
If the definition of insanity is doing the same things yet expecting a different result then this coaching staff is crazy or stupid(more likely the latter). They've failed at nearly every opportunity to alter the personnel in situations where the results have been negative. That specifically applies to the DB's as I've discussed here and halapio at OC.
'Haley has a place on this team. He's most likely our surest tackler'
Advanced stats show him yielding an 80.6% completion rate for 11.7 Y/A. He's God awful. His primary job is as a DB. To cover receivers. He simply can't do it. He trails receivers by two yards or more consistently. He has 0 passes defended in over 30 targets. He's our worst defender in 3rd down situations.
I swear when people post stuff like this I want to break things. Yes, he can tackle but if he can't cover who gives a shit. That's his primary responsibility and he can't do it!

This Giants team has been really tough to watch for past 4 weeks and it seems like they are going nowhere for 3rd year in a row. As much as I hate to admit it the Cowboys are more talented at nearly every position on the roster and should win this going away. Giants keeping it close into the 4th quarter would be nice, but I expect the route to be on by half-time. Would love to be wrong.
Cowboys 38 - Giants 17.
Guys, this is the Cowboys ! This is the team that always finds a way

Although he is playing the toughest position (slot) with pretty much zero safety help (as the other corners are too).
There is no team in all of sports that I despise more than the Dallas Cowboys and their fans. I'd rather see Philly win than Dallas. That's how much I hate them...

You need to tell the moron PS that its OK to run the ball two times in a row! I dont think I have ever seen someone call plays with LESS of a feel for the game. When they do run a successful play its like they dont know what the fuck to do next, mind-boggling!
Why not tonight? Remember Dallas lost 3 in a row. Remember the mighty Jets beat the almighty Boys a few weeks ago ,in this very stadium.
Tonight might just be the night! Danny dropping dimes!
Saquon taking the rock to the house!
The Giant D Yes the Giants D shutting down the Cowboy run game with our new improved D line.
You gotta believe!!
Seems kind of quite around here for a game that can define our season

+1. If we only win one more game the rest of the year I want it to be this one. I am so sick of losing to these assholes. I want to see Shurmur take some chances tonight. Just win.

Same here. They embarrassed us in Week 1 - play with an edge tonight. If we come out and meekly lose by 17+ points I'll be furious, and I'm mostly numb to the ineptitude by now. Shurmur needs to show a fucking pulse or pack his bags.
RE: Seems kind of quite around here for a game that can define our season
10m
Giants will have six healthy scratches (to join Sterling Shepard who is inactive with a concussion). QB Alex Tanney, OL Eric Smith, OL Chad Slade, DL RJ McIntosh, LB Chris Peace and LB Devante Downs in the inactive warmup group.
Assuming the Giants lose tonight it would setup a death match between Shurmur and Gase the loser facing unemployment. Mara really hates losing to the Jets and Gase appears to be on thin ice.

This. He has a fucking bulls eye on his back every week.
Slot receivers torch the Giants every single week. The one week they didnt (redskins) Keenum overthrew the slot receiver twice for two long TDs.

It's not like their is tight coverage and the QB is just dropping dimes
He is getting absolutely torched. And consistently.
RE: RE: Seems kind of quite around here for a game that can define our season
How would this game define their season? They're 2-6.
Because if they win tonight, they have the Jets and Bears. You never know, the NFL is a weird fucking place, and we have Eagles twice and that offense looks like doodoo without him.

Yup. Its insanely bad.
Also , for a more likely take, this game is pretty much a mini
I Have never felt more certain of a defeat against the Cowboys. I hope I am wrong of course, but I am anticipating an absolute whooping and I think it could get embarrassing.
Two hopes for this game: 1) I hope everyone comes out healthy and 2) that DJ doesn't look awful
RE: Seems kind of quite around here for a game that can define our season
I gotta get up at 4am. Theyre playing like ass. Never in the playoff hunt, meaningful football over by Halloween again, no faith in the coaching staff, questioning direction of the franchise.
And thats all valid. But who am I kidding? Im gonna watch, and its probably not gonna do anything but raise my blood pressure, but what can we do? I dont know about anyone else but I never consciously "picked" this team. Ive loved them for as long as i can remember. At this point its not really a choice. And when they do finally get it turned around itll have been worth it.
Oh, and fuck the Cowboys. And fuck Jerry Jones. Fuck them right in their stupid assholes.

So hes really great at tackling after a 11.7 yd gain
RE: I'd like to see Barkley break a long one tonight....
More
A comparison of tonight's starting tackles (per @pff):
-Tyron Smith and La'el Collins have combined to allow 2 sacks, 2 QB hits, 11 hurries and 15 pressures
-Nate Solder and Mike Remmers have combined to allow 8 sacks (7 by Solder), 3 QB hits, 45 hurries and 58 pressures

Daniel Jones is reason enough to keep watching. Even though they suck it's still nice to see him playing well.
I know we've seen sophomore slumps from Mayfield, Darnold, and Rosen but I don't expect that to happen to Jones. He's too smart and works too hard for him to not take a step forward next season.
changes to the OL apparently. My guess is that the Cowboys simply do what everyone else does, namely control our OL with four or five DL, dropping six or seven into coverage. That will make it very difficult to move the ball.

So what is worse when it comes to playing Haley- that there is no one on the roster to replace him or that the coaches CANT get anyone else ready to replace him?

I have to agree with Torraq, it's time to insert Pulley at C. He's not a good starting center but at least he's good at making the proper calls.
Sucks that once again Giants are done by November...BUT
Kinda cool that they do have a decent core of young players and some salary cap relief on the horizon.
Dont think this is the 1991 Cowboys necessaibut at least there is hope. Puzzled by the trade with the Jets-seems counter to what a team in the Giants position would do. Hopefully it pans out and we nail down another good draft and some decent free agents.

^This. I think Dallas wins this game easily, principally by controlling both lines of scrimmage. My guess is that they win by at least two touchdowns.
I think we thump them
Also heard Dallas D on 3 rd and seven overall has only allowed a 7% conversion rate.
I hesitate to share things I hear when I m casually listening, but pretty sure this is what I heard, I apologize if inaccurate
But if true in todays NFL where rules favor the offense, those stats are Astounding.

They should. And release Tanney or Haley
Yeah, he's not the best corner but he's shown he can play.......not a guy to be discarded at this time.
On offense I would like Barkley to touch the ball at least 30 times. Don't care how, but that guy should have the ball. No turnovers...none. Limit penalties PLEASE.
Check it out if that's your thing. One of Giants Stadium in 1976 with the NY skyline - black and white - was really neat.

I swear when people post stuff like this I want to break things. Yes, he can tackle but if he can't cover who gives a shit. That's his primary responsibility and he can't do it!

Lol. Seriously.
Cowboys 38 - Giants 17.
Giants need to keep it close, realize they can compete, and finish strong.

Although he is playing the toughest position (slot) with pretty much zero safety help (as the other corners are too).
See them doing a good job against the run, but Dak having all day to throw, like he usually has against this team.
Dallas will score 5 times and they will all be TD's - the Giants are not scoring 5 TD's
Biggest thing I want to see is Jones against a good defense and good defensive coaches

Distilling it to basics
Defense
Get off the field on third down
Prevent a series of long drives
Offense
Convert third downs
Score TDs in Red Zone
No turnovers
Youd think after a while you might start thinking the people who you want to shut up might have a point.

You need to tell the moron PS that its OK to run the ball two times in a row! I dont think I have ever seen someone call plays with LESS of a feel for the game. When they do run a successful play its like they dont know what the fuck to do next, mind-boggling!
Tonight might just be the night! Danny dropping dimes!
Saquon taking the rock to the house!
The Giant D Yes the Giants D shutting down the Cowboy run game with our new improved D line.
You gotta believe!!
How would this game define their season? They're 2-6.
Ah yes, the stupidest celebration in NFL history

Giants will have six healthy scratches (to join Sterling Shepard who is inactive with a concussion). QB Alex Tanney, OL Eric Smith, OL Chad Slade, DL RJ McIntosh, LB Chris Peace and LB Devante Downs in the inactive warmup group.

This. He has a fucking bulls eye on his back every week.
Slot receivers torch the Giants every single week. The one week they didnt (redskins) Keenum overthrew the slot receiver twice for two long TDs.
Quote:
Advanced stats show him yielding an 80.6% completion rate for 11.7 Y/A. He's God awful. His primary job is as a DB. To cover receivers. He simply can't do it. He trails receivers by two yards or more consistently. He has 0 passes defended in over 30 targets. He's our worst defender in 3rd down situations.

It's not like their is tight coverage and the QB is just dropping dimes
He is getting absolutely torched. And consistently.

Because if they win tonight, they have the Jets and Bears. You never know, the NFL is a weird fucking place, and we have Eagles twice and that offense looks like doodoo without him.

Yup. Its insanely bad.
Go Giants!
...a Giants football game.
And I'm talking about well over half a century of watching (and being at) their games.
This is a bad football team overseen by an even worse coach.
Two hopes for this game: 1) I hope everyone comes out healthy and 2) that DJ doesn't look awful
I suspect our season has already been defined.

Go Giants!
If that happens we might see an upset but historically
we suck in primetime games .
It would be nice to knock those SOB's off for once

Grrr I loathe that SOB

A lot of cheers for some of the Cowboys as they run out of the tunnel for the special teams portion of warmups.
Tonight we win !

So what is worse when it comes to playing Haley- that there is no one on the roster to replace him or that the coaches CANT get anyone else ready to replace him?
I have to agree with Torraq, it's time to insert Pulley at C. He's not a good starting center but at least he's good at making the proper calls.
Dont think this is the 1991 Cowboys necessaibut at least there is hope. Puzzled by the trade with the Jets-seems counter to what a team in the Giants position would do. Hopefully it pans out and we nail down another good draft and some decent free agents.
Go Giants.
What is there to talk about with the giants? Right now just DJ and thats about it.
The performance of the OL with Pulley last year was better than the performance of the OL with Halapio. That much is obvious.
ummm yeah...about that
