...the Giants offensive line has regressed from last season's (way) below average unit.
So, too, has their defensive line, as well as their secondary, wide receivers and the run game.
And it's not like last year's team was firing on all cylinders.
(Oh, and Aldrick Rosas has regressed, too, but at least he was coming off a great season.)
So, what can Giants' fans hang their hats on? That Daniel Jones is getting much-needed experience while he coughs up the ball at an unprecedented rate? Or should we just blame the offensive line for that?
The only clarity we have about this franchise is that it's an utter mess with no solutions "right around the corner." I won't say "utter disarray," but the Giants certainly do not know how to win football games. Full stop.
As for the 17-41 Head Coach, his situational in-game decisions are terrible and -- based on the passion of his players -- Pat Shurmur's motivation and leadership skills are hovering right around zero.
Next April the Giants will have a Top 5 pick in the Draft, and the overall #1 selection is well within reach for this lackluster football team.
But the Draft won't make much of a difference until the current coaching regime is removed, and the ownership takes itself out of the football-making decision process.
It's time to start over.
Again.
By 2022 Shmurmur might, MIGHT challenge to break his HC career mark of a five win season.
Hog mollie master is the worst GM in the league. The Leonard Williams trade is quite possibly the stupidest thing that any GM has done in the past few years. Why are we trading away picks when we are 2-6???? For a free agent! It’s like he saw the Steelers do it for Fitzpatrick and he thought, “yes! We can turn it around too!” All these great draft picks i hear about, where are they? No line, no pass rush, no run stopping, no linebackers, no receivers.
They tore it down. Now it’s time to get a real coach and GM to build it back up. Because these two aren’t capable.
Shurmur is just not a leader. All I hear are things like "go back to work", "try to get a win" and a overall subtle demeanor of passing blame to youth and talent. This soft mentality and lack or urgency has infected the team.
It is really hard at this point to get a true value on what this team has with this staff which poses quite a dilemma for Mara and/or DG imo.
What is the upside of Shurmur? At best a 8-8 or maybe 9-7 team with what would probably be a very talented roster. Time to move on.
Jones is regressing. The coach is not helping him though. Simplify things for him. Roll him out, cut the field down for him for reads. Put him under center and utilize play action.
I felt the only you bring the staff back was if you beat Dallas and split with Philly. This is not happening. It's the NFL and there is a lot of parity.
He has played well - but think about it - the best LB play was coming from a rookie we drafted in 5th round. And, we're runninag 3-4 where quality LB is the core of your defense
And what were we doing last year, re-building? The 2019 Giants team is worse than the 2018 version. That's reality. Call it whining, if you wish.
The in game decisions as was said above are really really bad and emblematic of bad situational planning and awareness by coaching.
I don’t dislike Shurmur or Bettcher and they’re probably very good men, but I think changes are warranted. We’ve seen enough to know this isn’t getting better and my fear is Mara will get fooled into a couple wins against the Phins and Skins to keep it together another year.
oh really? where?
Great rebuild, tell me one position besides RB where the Giants are better than average, you can't. So it's a rebuild where they still need about 20 players!
Your words: "There was nothing about last night that was new."
O-line weak and worthless: Check
Non-existent run game: Check
Daniel Jones puts the ball on the carpet: Check
Defensive front 7 slaughtered in the run game: Check
Secondary lost and bewildered: Check
Stupid Head Coaching in-game decisions: Check
Rosas loses focus on PAT: Check
I may have implied that last night was pivotal, but that was not really my intent. It was to point out the obvious: this franchise is going no where for a very long time to come.
And one last thing. There is a BBI narrative that "at least" we've found our future QB in Daniel Jones. I do not subscribe to that plot line. The book on him is just beginning, and no one really knows how it will end.
