what do we have in Daniel Jones..?

riceneggs : 11/5/2019 6:40 am
I know its early and this team is deficient in alot of areas. so I've been trying to get a gauge on what Daniel Jones actually does well.

I'm struggling with this.

I'm not seeing him go through progressions often. it's more "1st read, force it in there".

Fumbles and interceptions are killers.

but to the fan that sees things more clearly than I do, what does he do well?
Ummm
LawrenceTaylor56 : 11/5/2019 6:46 am : link
he's good at taking hits I guess.

He's good at not yelling at his shit offensive line for not giving him time. He's good at extending plays when the opportunity is there.
Tough to fully assess
Lines of Scrimmage : 11/5/2019 6:50 am : link
Positives I see: toughness, gamer, good enough arm, accurate.
Weaknesses: Little overwhelmed, ball security, a boneheaded decision or two each game. I think the scheme though is attributing to his holding the ball and some of the fumble issues.

I think he is being very poorly coached. Too much is on his plate. They are not creating easy completions for him and the heavy shotgun is hurting him imo.

I think Shurmur is being exposed as not the QB whisperer he is portrayed as. Think Reid, Shanahan, McVay would get more from him?
Overall, I like the kid.

He’s got a strong arm, seems to be able to make the throws, he seems to also recognize changes in the defense and that’s encouraging at this stage. Clearly he’s a good runner who can use his legs for first downs.

I’m hoping the following things are chalked up to being a rookie who played at Duke: doesn’t always feel the pocket, doesn’t seem to see all defenders on longer throws (tendency to lift it up there too often), and it’s no secret, the ball security issue is a biggie.

Big picture he seems to be a very solid rookie. I’m glad he’s getting this chance because I think he has a chance to be very good for a while.
***loft it up there

.
I honestly think he is going to be really good
Essex : 11/5/2019 6:57 am : link
He has an accurate arm, he is athletic, and he is tough.

He is right now playing with no protection, no separation from receivers, and moronic coaching and still flashing. So i am high on him still. Hope i am right on this one.

Btw, Shurmur is such and idiot. I don’t care how athletic he is, you don’t ask your franchise QB to be a lead blocker. That play was idiotic even though I think it got a first down.

I think the word you're looking for in your subject line is "access" not "asses"

I like Jones and think he will be fine.

How good do you think Dak would be with our OL?
I see a young QB
Tim in Eternal Blue : 11/5/2019 7:13 am : link
Who doesn't get rattled. Still tries to make plays. Wants to win. Moment is never too big. Can extend plays. Give him time. He's getting his ass kicked out there.
The line is doing him absolutely no favors
Canton : 11/5/2019 7:48 am : link
Help be fine once we have a good line. At the moment it's abysmal.

No actually it should be "assess".
Way too early to tell

What happens if his next season looks like Darnonld and Mayfield look this season? The sophomore slump is real
He's a consistent fumbler/turnover machine.
penkap75 : 11/5/2019 8:10 am : link
Until he fixes it, thats so far what he has done consistently. I like that he is always looking downfield, and not checking down, but its a high risk/reward type play that so far is not paying off.
Who Can Say
Jeffrey : 11/5/2019 8:16 am : link
Too early to tell and too many holes in the offense to know who to blame. However, if the Giants find themselves in an Arizona Cardinals position of being able to take a top ranked QB next year or someone else, I would still say it is worth trading down and starting to fill the holes--even though I am far from sold that Jones is the answer.
I think he's looked good for a rookie
Heisenberg : 11/5/2019 8:22 am : link
Turnovers are his big problem. Can't win with those.

But we won't really know for a year or two. Let's remember how bad Eli was his first year. He was god awful. Rookies need to learn and the team around Jones needs to get better.
Slightly more good than bad
LG in NYC : 11/5/2019 8:44 am : link
worth seeing more of, but don't use a pen to put his name in at QB for the next 10 years.

as others said, tough to fully evaluate him with this OLine and coaching staff.
If Shurmur is the coach next year
arniefez : 11/5/2019 8:49 am : link
The Giants will be looking for a new QB in 2021 or 2022 the latest. With the right coach Jones could be very valuable. This coach will end his career quickly.

Neither are his WRs. Between not getting open and drops, they aren't helping him much at all.

Fucking idiot
He does a lot of good things
lax counsel : 11/5/2019 9:11 am : link
And he has cut down on the bad throws the past couple of games. However, he needs to do a better job with ball security and pocket awareness. I think that’s going to come with NFL experience. If not, the Giants will still be looking for their guy.

think he'll be really good if we can ever protect him, and give him some receivers who can separate. If not, we'll never know in all likelihood.
i like him
Dinger : 11/5/2019 9:52 am : link
I like his talent I like his toughness and his smarts. I don't like that he's trying to do too much. The interception at the end of the first half was just stupid. The lead blocking was courageous but not needed. The running and not sliding is going to get him hurt and that will change his career. Shurmur MAY have had him prepared from day 1 but he's not coaching him to be smarter. Its early. He's probably still trying to prove he's worth the 1st round pick. He needs a good coach.

Or maybe a head coach who understands a rookie QB with no protection could use some help staying upright by calling more plays to get him outside of the pocket.

Shurmur's "QB whisperer" reputation is well-earned but I think he's the kind of guy who is a very good coordinator but can't handle HC duties too. He just doesn't seem to be able to handle all of the responsibilities that go with being HC while also being the team's de-facto OC and coaching up the young QB. It stinks really because if he was the OC and they had a real HC it would likely be great for Jones' development but he isn't and he can't handle it. It's a little bit like McAdoo where the Giants offense was far more creative when he was the OC and as a result was a whole lot better. Like with McAdoo, it's time to move on.
