I know its early and this team is deficient in alot of areas. so I've been trying to get a gauge on what Daniel Jones actually does well.
I'm struggling with this.
I'm not seeing him go through progressions often. it's more "1st read, force it in there".
Fumbles and interceptions are killers.
but to the fan that sees things more clearly than I do, what does he do well?
He's good at not yelling at his shit offensive line for not giving him time. He's good at extending plays when the opportunity is there.
Weaknesses: Little overwhelmed, ball security, a boneheaded decision or two each game. I think the scheme though is attributing to his holding the ball and some of the fumble issues.
I think he is being very poorly coached. Too much is on his plate. They are not creating easy completions for him and the heavy shotgun is hurting him imo.
I think Shurmur is being exposed as not the QB whisperer he is portrayed as. Think Reid, Shanahan, McVay would get more from him?
I’m hoping the following things are chalked up to being a rookie who played at Duke: doesn’t always feel the pocket, doesn’t seem to see all defenders on longer throws (tendency to lift it up there too often), and it’s no secret, the ball security issue is a biggie.
Big picture he seems to be a very solid rookie. I’m glad he’s getting this chance because I think he has a chance to be very good for a while.
He is right now playing with no protection, no separation from receivers, and moronic coaching and still flashing. So i am high on him still. Hope i am right on this one.
Btw, Shurmur is such and idiot. I don’t care how athletic he is, you don’t ask your franchise QB to be a lead blocker. That play was idiotic even though I think it got a first down.
I think the word you're looking for in your subject line is "access" not "asses"

No actually it should be "assess".
But we won't really know for a year or two. Let's remember how bad Eli was his first year. He was god awful. Rookies need to learn and the team around Jones needs to get better.
as others said, tough to fully evaluate him with this OLine and coaching staff.
Neither are his WRs. Between not getting open and drops, they aren't helping him much at all.

Or maybe a head coach who understands a rookie QB with no protection could use some help staying upright by calling more plays to get him outside of the pocket.

Shurmur's "QB whisperer" reputation is well-earned but I think he's the kind of guy who is a very good coordinator but can't handle HC duties too. He just doesn't seem to be able to handle all of the responsibilities that go with being HC while also being the team's de-facto OC and coaching up the young QB. It stinks really because if he was the OC and they had a real HC it would likely be great for Jones' development but he isn't and he can't handle it. It's a little bit like McAdoo where the Giants offense was far more creative when he was the OC and as a result was a whole lot better. Like with McAdoo, it's time to move on.
