So Tate, as expected in the slot has tight coverage and Slayton, a rookie are under league average. Yet Tate made play after play and Ellison kept dropping passes. The others were better than league average, no?
Slayton played awful last night - you would think a guy with his speed Â
could at minimum scare the D deep and yet that performance was an embarrassment. I know he's a rookie but that was brutal to watch. Along with Baker's mistake on the Cooper TD.
The coaching staff seems to be completely lost when it comes to accountability. Has it really made sense to make Baker a locked in starter all year? He's gotten abused. Ballentine started getting reps last night which was good to see but don't know why he didn't get some earlier in the year. And same with Beal over the rest of the year.
That's why coaches have to bunch, stagger, use motion with receivers, and play/run action passes to try and create space/separation. The stuff that people complained about with McAdoo doesn't seem to be any different now that Jones is playing QB. Shurmur seems to have fallen in love with 3 WR personnel groups and shotgun formations. The rare motion in the offense is likely bringing a receiver close into the formation to run block.
A lot of this is scheme, when you see guys running wide open Â
he's supposed to be an offensive guru but his plays are awful. We NEVER have a receiver running wide open. I was at the Game last night with a great view from the end zone and nobody was open all night. Jones had nowhere to throw the ball. Our most popular route by far is to run 5 yards and turn around.
WTF happened to the slant routes Jones was so good at throwing? We didn't run a single one last night!!!! What about an RPO play? A crossing route? A misdirection concept?
It honestly looks like we borrowed a HS playbook to run our offense. What's crazy is that when Shurmur first got here he actually DID run better plays. WTF happened to him? What is going on here???
the second half of the season I remember people being wide open. The lack of running game this year and teams adjusting to his scheme have created this.
