Baker admits that nine games into his rookie season, he still doesn’t understand the Giants’ scheme. “Just the plays and everything like that,” Baker said was what he needed to improve the most. “The playbook. Just knowing the plays. Knowing what I need to do. Knowing my assignment." |

When asked if he needs to do a better job of learning his coverages Baker responded, “That ain’t a problem for me." |
Him sounding like a moron is on the coaches? I’m not defending the coaches because they’re terrible but come on!
We have to remember that he is being asked to do many things he did not do in college. It takes time to get a feel for the NFL game. I still am not sure if the Giants were playing zone to Bakers side on that Cooper TD. Bethea looked very late to react.
Admit the mistake and move on.
Has been on a pedestal all his career. Time to bench him and watch for a while until he learns the play called. If the other teammates know the play this idiot can too.
No free passes. If they don't do this and bench him for a bit, it sets a bad example of acceptable play. Soft coaches won't bench him lets see what transpires
Apple has been rated as one of the worst DB's this season and isn't he actually hurt now??
Is the implication that Apple was a decent pick and player?
Lombardo does suck, but it doesn't change the fact that Baker actually said that unless he's misquoting him.
I mean if he doesn't have the situational awareness to give a non answer, you have to worry about his ability to pick up a defense. Quotes like that start to sound a lot like Mr. Collins from last year, me first.
And if the coaches aren't putting him in a position to succeed, that's a whole other problem.
It's not like he's been playing well either, he's been torched the entire year do far. Teams are purposely targeting him.

Gettleman gem. Meanwhile Apple is having a productive season

But Fatman he plays on a good defense and with the transitive property that makes him a good defensive player, don't you know anything?
I don't want you ever agreeing with my posts.
Our CBs are the worse in the league
This post is proof you haven't actually watched Apple play this year and are probably just parroting what you heard from some dumb beat writer.
Kind of lazy but hey, its cool. Thats what 95% of BBI does anyway. When in Rome...
I know, but it's a problem for most of the defense, not just Baker. That falls on Bettcher and he's failing on multiple fronts.
This. I think Baker has talent and he's screwing up his coverages, but Bettcher isn't doing anyone any favors with his coaching schemes and styles. I don't think the Giants have been entirely sold on him, dating back to when they tried to bring Kacy Rodgers in here as a "consultant" before he chose to go to Tampa. The Giants have been evaluating Bettcher and from what I can see, they should move on from him pronto. They are building up a young defense, and if you do that, you need to work with them and coach them. They brought Bethea in specifically to help as a coach on the field/mentor in that aspect. But Bettcher strikes me as a guy who falls in love with complicated schemes and outsmarts himself while teams hit bread and butter plays on them. You've got a young defensive line, a group of linebackers who might not make the XFL, and either washed up veteran DBs (Jenkins/Bethea) or rookies who are getting confused (at least he played Ballentine yesterday and he looked pretty good).
Bottom line, no other professional sport is as impacted by coaching as the NFL is. The Giants have 2 ham n' egger coordinators (I'm still not really sure what Shula does) and Bettcher is a disaster. And they have poor man's Norv Turner as a head coach. The Giants are building a new young core to play, and honestly as much as I want to kill them for the talent level, they aren't exactly being coached up by the best group.
The ridiculousness on here is absolutely amazing. Veterans take time to adjust to different defensive schemes, but its newsworthy when a rookie admits that he is still learning 9 games into his rookie year.
Is there anything some of you won't bitch about?
Do you meant to say he twisted the statement and transformed it from something that should be interpreted as a positive thing?
That said, I'm not too worried about.
He's a rookie, learning in a tough spot, and that's part of growing.
He makes some nice plays, and sticks to his receiver when he isn't getting lost, and that's where you want to start.
The rest will come.
The announcers continually referred to his struggling in coverage and being picked on.
Yet, we have people here insisting he has played well. Just shows people see what they want to see. And on BBI, few can admit they were wrong
you're good in man coverage? you're going to play your guy man 90% of the time.
last night there was a play pre snap some receiver goes in motion and i swear FIVE of our guys moved/looked lost. one guy went in motion... ONE
BUT, I can't forget his mindset from training camp after he got hurt, he just didn't want to do shit.
Two points
1. Apple is trash
2. Apple is complete garbage
We already have that clip from camp when he was injured where one of the vets tell him to watch closely and take mental reps and he responded with “I don’t gotta do shit today”
Sounds like we got another scholarship guy.
Les, Apple is a HORRIBLE cover corner. He was a classic example of a guy whose draft status was positively impacted by the school he went to.
He has no feel for the position, has horrible footwork, no ball skills or awareness, etc. The only thing he did well was tackle.

I heard this too, and that was very alarming. Suggesting the baker wasn’t putting in the work and only now is beginning to realize what he needs to do as a professional football player. Bisignano is pretty well plugged in. It is certainly consistent with what we’ve seen on the field.
