An observation of note from last night's game

YANKEE28 : 11/5/2019 11:14 am
The pass interference call late in the game against Baker had more of an impact on the game that just that one play.

Shortly after the 27 yard PI penalty, Cooper scored on a blown coverage long 42 yard TD.

Immediately following the extra point, Shurmur ran down to about the 20 yard line and engaged the officials in a very heated argument. The argument continued for some time and Shurmur was incredibly animated.

Eventually all the officials went back to their positions, including the Side Judge, Greg Gautreaux (#80) who moved to his position along the Giants sideline. Gautreaux was the official that made the very questionable call of PI on Baker several plays earlier.

Shurmur then came over to Gautreaux and another heated exchange continued with Shurmur very animated. Shurmur continued and continued, even as the 2 teams lined up for the next kickoff.

The kickoff happened, and the Giants offense was back on the field. It was very obvious that their was confusion with the offense. I was happy that Shurmur gave Gautreaux hell for the call, but it simply went on for too long.

Now the Giants needed their plays called, and Shurmur was clearly not prepared. A quick 3 and out for the offense without any of the 3 plays resulting in positive yardage.

I will hold back on my opinion of Shurmur, but one thing is clear to me. A Head Coach (any Head Coach) should not be doubling up and calling the plays on offense.

Fans talk about firing coaches and more, but I think that first and foremost the constructive move that needs to be made is the GM and ownership telling Shurmur that he no longer has this dual role.
Yup, I've pointed it out for a season and a half

Shurmur is way too emotional and thin-skinned, it pours out of him and it's in no way useful to the players. He's a whiner on top of it.

No bueno.

He is my worst fear realized when we hired him.

Cleveland was not a mirage.

...interesting observations and you're probably right about Shurmur giving up his play-calling responsibilities.

But what to do about Pat Shurmur's utter lack of leadership and motivational skills? He's not cut out for Head Coaching in the NFL and there's simply no way of getting 'round that unalterable fact.

bitch. Not surprising he hired the guy.
There are a lot of little concerning things like that adding up

across the entire staff. Imagine where things would be if TB makes that chip shot FG.

Agree. You can't allow him to make changes. He has in no way earned the right to try to make himself a CEO coach at this point.

is he back even at 4-12? If they lose the Jets or Washington? Is he back no matter what?
They need to replace Shurmur
Jay on the Island : 11/5/2019 11:27 am : link
but I think ownership will make the wrong decision and just force staff changes on him. If they do they need to blow it up. Fire Bettcher and Hal Hunter. Then move Shula to QB coach and bring in an OC to call the plays.

There should be some very good coordinator options this offseason with the likely fires. If Garrett is let go Rod Marinelli, Kris Richard, and Kellen Moore will all be free. Dan Quinn will more than likely be fired by Atlanta and could be a great choice for DC as well.

If Doug Marrone is let go John DeFilippo will likely be available. IIRC Shurmur wanted to hire him when he first came to the Giants but had to settle for Shula.

Bill Callahan would be my choice for OL coach.

this head coach can't handle the pressure
Shurmur had lost it at that point
Rudy5757 : 11/5/2019 11:31 am : link
He should have never challenged the PI, yes it was a PI but its already been proven that unless it's over the top one way or the other the play will stand as called. The PI on Baker was another shitty call but what can you do. 1st and foremost he has to be the head coach and then call plays. To do that you need to stay in the moment and he was stuck on the bad calls. the game was already over at that point but it is a good point that you make, he left the team unprepared by worrying about things that are over.

I too now believe Shurmur has reached Peter Principle.
He shoulda threw the 2nd challenge flag

As I said above, I will hold off on my opinion of Shurmur at this point, but certainly I see what so many others have mentioned.

If you are looking for me to direct anger toward anyone, it would certainly be toward Mara and Tisch. These are the greedy bastards that soaked their long time customers with PSL fees for a terrible stadium.

As a family that has had season tickets since 1948, my fond memories are of a stadium packed with loyal Giants fans.

Last night's game is typical of what happens at every Giants game since Mara and Tisch made the game more about money than about team loyalty.

Stop and think about my game experience-more than half the seats filled by fans of opposing teams. Listening to the the Cowboys chants last night. Listening to the Eagles chants when they are in town. Having yellow terrible towels waived in my fact throughout a Steelers game.

And think about having a front row seat, but I clearly can't see well because of the Mara, Tisch, and Johnson decision to block the view of the game with metal bars.

And John Mara telling me that he actually sat in my seats and determined that the view is perfectly fine. And of course he did it in an empty stadium for 2 minutes- not on a gameday for 3+ hours.

The day the new stadium opened, everything changed for me as a fan.

There will come a day sooner than most think when there will be very few passionate Giant fans left.

People will go to the stadium as something interesting to do a couple of times a year. They'll gamble and play fantasy but the days of a loyal Giants fan base are dying right before our eyes.

Not the gravy train. The Mara's are richer than ever and the money will keep rolling in. But actual passionate Giant fans are becoming an endangered species.

You couldn't be more right about that dump they play in and the entire gameday experience. I won't go for free anymore.

Assistants aren't riders on a HC's contract. None of those assistants are free if they're under contract regardless of the status of the HC above them.

Yes, and Coughlin wasn't. He used to turn beet red and it wasn't even cold out.
The deeper point isn't about emotions

it's that he shouldn't be calling plays. Good post, Yankee28.

Two weeks ago I watched the Giants Chronicles Bill Belicheck episode and one thing Belicheck said that annoyed the hell out of me about this rash of Offensive Coordinator / Head Coach craze in the NFL was Belicheck saying “My job as defensive coordinator was to take Bill (Parcell’s) D and tailor it to our opponent that week.” It was a nothing line in the episode but it still made me angry about this fad of current head coaches who refuse to hire a coordinator to implement their philosophy. If a head coach is unable to find another coach in the league who he could teach and could correctly implement their philosophy then they just shouldn’t be a head coach; period. It’s your job description as the head coach to lead the offense and defense, if you can’t hire effective coordinators to run schemes that you as the head coach want to run, then you are a failure of a coach.
Baker grabbed the jersey
Vanzetti : 11/5/2019 1:02 pm : link
It was completely unnecessary and had no effect on the play. But he still did it and any time an official sees the jersey get pulled, its PI. Especially when you are a rookie and have the reputation for being burned

Giants fans want to see their team as victims. But overall the officiating actually favored them

You should have began your post with, "As Cooper was grabbing Baker's hands and jersey, Baker grabbed...".

Just for accuracy's sake, I mean.
How about Shurmur be organized about this?
cosmicj : 11/5/2019 2:53 pm : link
If he decides he needs to really berate the officials over this, the solution is to tell Shula right away to call the plays on the next series and then go yell to the officials. The way it plays out, just like Jon pointed out, shows that Shurmur completely lost self control and stopped doing his job in the middle of the 4th quarter.

This also shows what pressure Shurmur is under.

Good thread, Yankee.
