Never look forward to doing this as it takes all day. This time was no different. In an effort to expedite this, I did all my research online, Found the exact car I wanted and the price I wanted to pay. Made an appointment for a test drive in that car with a particular salesman. Figured that would get me out toot suite. Figure again.
First of all, the salesman hadn't come in yet so wait #1.
Second, he had trouble finding the car only to discover it was in detail. Wait #2.
Third, we get to detail and the detail guy had not detailed it yet. Wonderful.
Fourth, although there was no haggle over price salesman takes forever to get the contract to finance and finance takes forever to get the paperwork assembled leading to wait's 3 & 4.
Fifth, I get taken upstairs to finance (no one waiting in the waiting room, yet after a ton of time ("just a few minutes" I was told) nothing happens. Wait #5.
Sixth, the finance guy keeps getting confused with the stack of papers so... Wait #6.
Seventh, I get downstairs and nobody can find the car resulting in wait #7
Finally they find the car give me the fob but no one can find the paper license plates I need (new law in Calif.) so they say they will put the old dealer paper plates saying if I get stopped the registration is in the window.
I drive off shaking my head 5 hours after arrival.
A fun day!
Dealers hate cash buyers though. They love suckering average joe buyers with financing gimmicks since the average joe only cares about the monthly price and its easy to screw them with all sorts of financing number games.
All the smart people in my life always told me if you can't buy the car outright, then you can't afford it. Financing a depreciating asset is for suckers.

As car prices have gone up ($50k for a minivan) and wages have stagnated the auto loans have increased in length. When I grew up you could finance 3/4/5 years at various rates. These days? There now exist 72, 84 even 120 month loans! And because there are enough stupid irresponsible people out there, these loans are flourishing! Some are calling auto loans the new subprime risk.
I tried to buy a new car from a dealer one time. They couldn't give me a straight price. I walked out.
Look at it from that perspective.
Yes, the system could be much better. So could DMV.
New cars are fucking awesome. Plain Jane Honda Civic's are as solidly built and more feature-loaded then Mercedes were back when I was a kid.
Enjoy your ride!
At any rate, after we had the verbal agreement, dealer #1 calls me again and I tell him we have a verbal, THEN he says he can beat that price by another $500...(the one that they would've been "losing money on" if they accepted), we said no, because we weren't going to back out of our deal with the other guy.
Don't let them play games with you. Your best defense against that is their competition, and let them know you'll be contacting other dealers as well.
Most of those, like TrueCar, are designed to benefit the dealer, not the buyer.

You can look at literally *any* situation and always say that, "geez, somebody has it worse". But, while car buying is a privilege, complaining is a God-given right.

The thread title sounded like some serious First World Whining to me.
You did see who the poster was, didn't you?
Nope Kei Igawa
The balance of my sales, most are there initially for 90 minutes or so to pick out the car, test drive, negotiate and get approved by bank. They usually come back the next day for the car and that takes maybe 45 minutes.
There are exceptions but that’s the norm.

Kudos to you and your dealership. If only they all worked as you do.
I’ve bought our last 3 cars having come to terms via email/phone ahead of time, and had my financing in hand. But the car prep and document prep still didn’t start until after I walked thru the door. So it still ends up being a 2-3 hour process.

Volume internet sales are best for new. Last and only new car I negotiated over email. They still tried tricks when I went in to pay. When I went to walk out the door that changed. They still tried to get me to go through stuff like their finance and warranty but just say no. Last 3 cars have been used cash deals, two used minivans for my wife. She will sit there and grind them down, she got them to show her what was on their screen so she could see profit. when my new car hit 13 I bought a 2013 civic with 150k miles for 6k cash from someone who buys them at auction, adds 500, and moves them out. I spent 20 minutes on that one (not counting time at my mechanic to look it over) as I knew what I wanted.
This about sums it up.
Sorry for the delay, just seeing this...it was AutoNation I think in Pinellas Park, actually. Toyota dealer.
I've known about Toasted Monkey, it's just so far from me. I live in Brandon, so that's a hike, and I definitely wouldn't want to drive home after.
Maybe one day I'll stop in. I did help push a bar to become a Giants bar near me...The Forge in Brandon. They know have my Giants flag hanging in their bar.
