Daniel Jones: My Biggest Concern Right Now...

M.S. : 11/6/2019 10:51 am

...are the number of sacks (not to mention hits) he's taken in the 7 games he has started so far. Pro-rated over an entire season, his sack level would be 59, and while that's not in the same neighborhood as David Carr's rookie year with Houston (76), 59 sacks is a very, very alarming number.

How will this impact our rookie QB down the line. Will he start taking his eyes off the downfield and looking at his feet (ala Kerry Collins?); or getting rid of the ball too quickly (ala Eli Manning?); or develop some other early bad habit that will hinder his play in the years to come?

The Giants have got to be real careful now. More game-time experience doesn't mean shit if Daniel Jones continues to be harassed, bounced around and battered in the pocket. Our offensive line is melting down right before our eyes, and if this continues, I say sit Daniel Jones and let him watch the game from the sidelines. The last thing this desperate team needs is to develop a gun-shy QB who is supposed to be the future of this franchise.
Eli got absolutely murdered

his rookie season, it didn't effect him much. Jones is getting pressured/hit a good amount but he's not a rag doll back there. I don't think this will have any effect. He's a gamer.
A lot
cokeduplt : 11/6/2019 10:53 am : link
Of hard hits too. I agree it’s very worrisome
Maybe scheme some bootlegs
GiantsRage2007 : 11/6/2019 10:53 am : link
or move the pocket some

there are ways to limit the qb getting hit since we're not getting new OL till the draft or FA
Jones is often getting sacked b/c he holds the ball a little too long
GiantNatty : 11/6/2019 10:58 am : link
Carr was more often than not getting sacked because of free rushers in his face almost immediately.

Carr's situation will make anyone skittish. Jones's situation is less likely to, imo.

A valid concern. It's hard to predict what a players limit may be. I dont think Eli was ever the same player after the beating he took in the championship game vs San Francisco.
Valid concern, but what's to be done about it?
81_Great_Dane : 11/6/2019 11:08 am : link
They can't sit Jones because the line is playing badly. There's no way to upgrade the line at this point. He can't roll out on every play.

He's going to have to learn to go through his progressions faster and get rid of the ball sooner. That's just experience. Might as well get it now.
Jones has taken some hits, but Eli got clobbered in 2004
regulator : 11/6/2019 11:10 am : link
the Jerome McDougle hit was downright violent. Thus far Jones has protected himself a bit better (can't say the same for the football).

Its not the oline, its the scheming and coaching. How do you give up 8 sacks to Arizona fantasy football WR draft worst team in the league? Wake the fuck up Shmurmur.
some of you guys sound like Jone's mother
Platos : 11/6/2019 11:16 am : link
its football, if he can't take these hits let him walk.

we can't be worried about having a glass QB. if he's glass, get rid of him.

Jone's is tough, he needs to strengthen his damn grip lol
This is why the #1 prority fo the Giants is to olinemen who can
SterlingArcher : 11/6/2019 11:18 am : link
protect him! Every single game you see blizters and dlinemen getting to Jones without being blocked! Would better coaching help? Perhaps, but better talent certainly will.

What a ridiculous post. Is Wilson not a franchise QB? A couple of years ago he took 200+ hits and the next closest was under 100. The Seahawks changed their offensive philosophy and wanted to run the ball way more to take the pressure off of Wilson. Wilson has been fantastic the last 2 years because of it.
It's all on coaching and scheming
Coach Red Beaulieu : 11/6/2019 11:26 am : link
How do you give up 8 sacks to the Cards? Our stacked Dline was playing out of their minds in the SB runs, but did Rodgers and Brady get sacked 8 times? No because those teams made adjustments.

Shuumur is like no adjustment Walrus letting Osi get 6 sacks in a game.
No question he is taking way too many hits
arniefez : 11/6/2019 11:28 am : link
It doesn't seem to be getting better.
Would Eli really be playing all that different right now?
mattlawson : 11/6/2019 11:29 am : link

Well the genius
mittenedman : 11/6/2019 11:55 am : link
otherwise known as Pat Shurmur keeps throwing him to the dogs. Giants come out 1-dimensional in Shotgun week in, week out.

Can't stand Shurmur, he's going to screw Jones & Barkley up with these terrible gameplans.

fumbling the ball

At the rate we are going
mdc1 : 11/6/2019 12:22 pm : link
we should seriously considering some of the other QBs in the next draft and trade him for picks. Not sure who goes after Tua, etc. but Jones is mediocre compared to that talent level.

His sloppiness with ball protection is something hard to solve.
He has to learn to get rid of the ball
Vanzetti : 11/6/2019 12:48 pm : link
Especially when the team is in FG range

I think Eli’s ability to avoid sacks even when defenders were on him in an instant was vastly under appreciated

With the new rules as soon as that ball is gone, qb is protected
The number of sacks is concerning
Biteymax22 : 11/6/2019 12:50 pm : link
for any QB. It means our oline stinks which causes a lot of other problems.

I get what you're saying about it ruining him, but he doesn't really seem phased by it.
The way Jones

Runs with ball or even blocks, scares the hell out me. Man he gets rocked sometimes. Kid has to learn to slide on those runs. That running play were he was blocking, he got lit up by a DB (Not sure who it was for Dallas). Looked so uncoordinated. lol Kid got guts I's admit that.

The Carl Nassib hit was Daniels version of that.
It's a concern

I agree.
It’s a legit concern

Who is keeping track of the issues and concerns of this team because that list is becoming quite long...
He has 16 turnovers
since1925 : 11/6/2019 2:20 pm : link
8 INT, 8 fumbles lost (10 total).

That pace would put him close to 30 turnovers this year. That is a much bigger concern than sacks.
The guy is gritty and can take a hit and bounce back.....
Simms11 : 11/6/2019 9:45 pm : link
Kerry Collins was never as gritty as DJ. Kerry got skittish in the pocket after getting his jaw broken by a hit by Romanowski, IIRC.
DJ had plenty of practice

Kerry Collins won a high school state championship, a college national championship, and got the Giants to the Super Bowl. He was plenty gritty enough.

DJ has won two NFL games. Let's not run down former Giants because we like a young player.
