Nate Solder is the 2nd highest paid LT in the NFL. He has allowed 8 sacks so far this year. That’s 2 more than Ereck Flowers ever allowed in a whole season.
Not everyone performs to their expectations or those of the fans. At the time, we just lost Andrew Norwell to Carolina and our OL was a shambles.
Did we overpay? YES
But we can't shoot Getts for that signing when there was little out there on the OL at the time. Remember, we drafted W. Hernandez later that draft...and Zeitler was this off-season.
what happen to make him look better was Eli just started throwing the ball to the check down as his 1st option. Which made life easier for Solder ... Jones is on the other end of the spectrum he is holding it too long make his job that much harder.
Jones needs to get his internal clock in order and he need better OLs to boot. Not to mention a WR that can cause some havoc on his own.
Solder is bad but Flowers was still worse. And it's not all about the sacks. Flowers openly admitted to not studying for his opponent. The guy didn't even try. Just a giant buffoon - no pun intended.
Solder didn't play this badly last year. He's obviously fallen off but you can't predict when it'll happen. Andrew Witworth went to the Pro Bowl at age 35 (who everyone lambasted Reese for not even looking at because of his age) and is still playing for the Rams at age 37. There are a lot of other linemen who play into their late 30's as well.
The gamble in signing an older player is not knowing when they'll stop being effective. It's a gamble they had to take at the time. I don't miss Flowers at all.
Lets just hope they finally fix this OL mess after the season.

Still waiting for any Gettleman defender to answer the question: who was Gettleman's target at OLT if he had successfully signed Norwell? We can all agree that he couldn't afford both Norwell AND Solder, so if he had signed Norwell, he would have needed an option at OLT.
No matter how much you want to support Gettleman's signing of Solder, it is impossible to claim that he didn't have any other options at OLT unless you want to suggest that he was planning to just figure it out as he went along (or perhaps even keep Flowers at OLT) if he had signed Norwell. That, to me, seems even more difficult to defend than the Solder signing.
So which is it? Did DG never have an OLT plan for the scenario where he succeeded in signing Norwell? Or can we finally put to rest this silly argument that signing Solder was a good idea because there were no other options?
Either there were other options at OLT besides Solder or DG didn't ever have a plan for OLT to go along with signing Norwell. Which DG foolishness do you want to defend?
Short memory for many here, but I remember Eli having to get rid of the ball much quicker than he should have because Flowers was getting beat all the time. As bad as Solder has been, not in the same ballpark. These comparisons need to stop.
It should be "Where would the Patriots have been with Flowers instead of Solder?"
Of course the missed games greatly impact that and he has more receiving yards but still...
or piss in your soup?

Sorry.

Same method same results from different players over two coaches two gms

I thought a good LT was supposed to protect a rookie QB, not blame sacks on him.

Solder has been terrible. At no point was his play in NE as bad as it was last year and this year is worse
BTW Norwell Is playing just as bad as Solder
I really believe if he was a rookie or UDFA, he'd be on the pine.
Forget about value, forget about the contract. Just his play has been below replacement level.
