My Gettleman KPI Scorecard

V.I.G. : 11/6/2019 4:09 pm
|
Rated 1-10 in three phases of his job:
-free agency
-draft
-trades

The ratings are weighted based on the performance/outlook of the player versus the cost to acquire/dispose. It's subjective, yes. But player evaluations/transactions are subjective and it's at least a structured attempt at evaluating DG. For these purposes, I'm leaving Eli out of it assuming Mara was the major decision influence there.

NJBlueTuna : 11/6/2019 4:18 pm : link
To give Barkley a 3 yet you give Jones an 8. I get people were upset at taking a rb, even a generational one, with the 2nd pick. But given you gave Jones an 8 so now we potentially got our QB and stud RB defies logic.

Sorry, didn’t bother reading the rest after that.
Interesting perspective
regulator : 11/6/2019 4:21 pm : link
As you note, it is subjective, so I think you overvalue:

Jamon Brown
Michael Thomas
Spencer Pulley
Big George
DeAndre Baker
Weston Richburg
Ryan Connelly (nice player, small sample size, serious injury)

and undervalue:

Antonie Bethea (but not by much)
Saquon Barkley
Darius Slayton

I like the kind of analysis you're doing here, though.

I know that 3 for SB would be controversial. My view on using the #2 for any RB given the state of the franchise. If 5 is average return for the investment, I don't think a 3 is too harsh.

One guy was a fifth round pick and the other we traded up to get in the first

And I have my reservations about SB but to give him s 3 and Baker a 6?

You are not being consistent in considering the round. Sometimes it seems like you are and sometimes not

That’s not subjective...it’s personal based upon your contempt and not supported by any logic of what a value pick would have been. A 3 to a generational talent, even if taken too high based upon team need loses credibility. And most draft gurus hold to the theory not to draft on need. Would you have taken a guard or baker or Darnold instead?.....
Perhaps

How many starters or potential starters are there from the 2018 and 2019 drafts and college free agents

The Giants have 13 players who have started or who starting potential from the drafts and college free agency

No matter how you feel about Giants management that is great productivity

The Giants are 7–18 under his watch. 3-18 vs teams with starting QBs. 2-19 if Gay makes a field goal he probably hits 99 times/100.

The arrow is pointing down and I have no faith he can fix it with his record to date. Jones and Barkley have flashed but much too early to declare their picks a success. But hey at least organizational culture survey scores are high and everyone is singing kumbaya

I think Slayton's potential for a 5th round investment scores slightly higher for Baker's 1st round investment.

FWIW, I was in the if they don't love a QB, trade for a ton of draft capital camp.

Even generational RBs [who get injured too...] need an OL

a starter label itself on a 2-7 team doesn't make it productive. performance is the key and I don't see his draft picks really outperforming their draft capital. A 5 rating on a 2nd rounder should contribute more than a 5 rating on a 5th rounder.

well said. The point of this post is how much of this blame do you put on DG vs the coaching staff. IMO, this is not a winning roster that DG has put together.

last year barkley was arguably the best back in the league. this year he gets hurt after a good start and while he has been sluggish since his return...a 3? Right there with Halapio who missed last year, is our worst lineman this year, and likely won't be here next year in a starting role. His performance and outlook(is this future performance on the team?) is equal to Barkley? If you are trying to quantify this, try something with better criteria. Look into value engineering and AHP.
It's fine if you want to ignore the data on positional value
NoGainDayne : 11/6/2019 5:52 pm : link
analytically it's weaker to go against what the data says but that's your prerogative.

Acting like there is something wrong with the people that suggest going with the data on RBs is the correct thing that's becoming an incredibly tiring trope. "Generational talent blah blah" at least bring something new to the table if you want to fly in the face of strong analytical evidence.
Draft
Archer : 11/6/2019 5:59 pm : link
I agree that it would be harder to start on a team other than the Giants
I also believe that is disingenuous to diminish the players drafted
There are 5-6 players that could start on any team
The other 7 players are good players who have a chance to be part of the Giants future

Sure - but do our 2nd/3rd rounders really outperform their draft slot? Or is their return so so compared to their investment? It's why for example, I give Slayton and Connelly higher grades than Hernandez.

because pro bowl RBs do far less for a team's win / loss record than other positions. It's not the player, but the ROI on a #2.

Kind of tired reading about that missed fg. Did you give them any extra wins for the 60+ yard field goals made against them the past few years..... didn’t think so

They WON the game because Daniel Jones did something that hasn’t happened in the previous 15 years, lead a comeback from 18 down.

They won, despite your spin on the game
So Peppers is a 6. Baker is a 6. And Barkley is a 3?
Mike from Ohio : 11/7/2019 7:35 am : link
I don’t even know where to begin with this. You and I are watching different football games. Or is the assumption just that Baker and Peppers will just start playing better at some point because they were drafted in the first round, therefore they were nice picks?

So other than the Barkley pick, everyone is awesome regardless of on field performance? Would have maybe be easier to just write that.

Hmm, so you point out a FG that probably is made 9 out of 10 times, but didn't mention 2 or 3 FGs that are made less than 1 out of 10 - the +58 yarders.
The 2018 and 2019 FA columns are flipped
cosmicj : 11/7/2019 7:45 am : link
Also, the Jamon grading is inconsistent so I would look at that. Shouldn’t his outgoing and incoming grades be the same? And Jamon is a pair of FA transactions. He has nothing to do with the draft.

I also think you’re giving Baker way too high a grade. He’s shown some disturbing performance tendencies this season and is a 1sr rounder.

Most importantly, where’s the grade for picking Shurmur?

I want to see a v2.

The first jamon was the cost of picking him up on waivers. The second was the decision to let him go at his free agent contract he got elsewhere.

Thinking of Landon the same way. The decision not to match WAS contract was a good one versus his contribution.

For Connelly, I agree, great find in the 5th, but at this point, how can you give him a 10? He played a game and a half as starter. He definitely flashed, but who is to say that he will ever come back and be the same player?

Wouldn't his grade be "incomplete", but if you had to assign a number it be more in the 5-7 range? A 10 under any scale is the highest you can be.
