Giants tried to claim Seahawks WR Gary Jennings

Eric from BBI : Admin : 11/7/2019 7:55 am
Field Yates @FieldYates

The Giants attempted to claim former Seahawks WR Gary Jennings off of waivers, per source. With Sterling Shepard (concussion) uncertain to play for some time, that’s a position of need and depth. Jennings wound up in Miami, who had waiver priority over New York.
Would like to see what Sills or White Jr. can do

We're 2-7, hopefully they get a shot.
I guess the rumored interest in Grier
Gatorade Dunk : 11/7/2019 8:05 am : link
was really just interest in his WRs.
Other than the rookie

I don’t think much of the WR on the team including Tate. It’s a position of need.
Interesting info re:wide receivers

Off topic a bit but a Atlanta sports radio station gave an interesting stat regarding the importance of great WR’s to the success of a team: of the top 20 current highest paid WR’s in the game today, only one, Agholor of the Eagles, has a Super Bowl ring.
They tried to claim Chris Carter but the NFL gave him to MINN
David B. : 11/7/2019 8:45 am : link
He had his bags packed and was on the phone with Parcells, ready to fly to NY, but the NFL overruled the Giants claim and honored the Vikings claim.

Just read that in Parcells' biography. I'm sure some of you knew that, but it was news to me.

Some things in the NFL never change.

Great stat.

Other than Plaxico, I can't think of a WR that has helped NYG with a Super Bowl that is was acquired on a major free agent contract of a top 10 1st round pick. Nicks was a late 1st rounder. Cruz an undrafted free agent, Mark Ingram a 1st rounder but not a superstar. Toomer an early 2nd rounder, Manningham 3rd rounder. Shockey was a mid 1st rounder, Bavaro 4th rounder, Howard Cross a 5th rounder, Boss 5th round. Ballard UDFA.

You need talent at the skill positions but if you don have your QB, a good line and a good defense it won't matter.
There goes our playoff chances
HomerJones45 : 11/7/2019 8:54 am : link
who cares? Probably a bum. 4th round pick in 2019 waived halfway through the season without appearing in a game. What does that tell us?

Now, watch Josh Gordon light it up in Seattle; that would be our luck.

Alshon Jeffery has a somewhat complicated salary structure but he's getting his money, more than Agholor, and of course he has a ring too.

Quote:
Jeffery's $11.75 million 2019 salary and $1 million of his 2020 salary are guaranteed for injury. The 2019 salary will become fully guaranteed on the 3rd day of the 2018 League Year while the $1 million vests on the 3rd day of the 2019 League Year.

Also, the fact that Cruz, Nicks and Manningham were underpaid per the NFL's anti-labor provisions has no logical correlation to the the importance of WRs to winning a Super Bowl.

They were the reason that the Giants, with a 32nd-ranked rushing offense, won the SB. "It's a Cruz and Nicks game", said BB.

And then it was Manningham's.

Tate's ok - not great; not terrible. I'm glad we have him, especially

with Shepard out. Slayton has his ups and downs - not bad for a rookie, but not someone you can depend on. I'd also like to see what White can do. If he gets a chance, he may turn out better than Slayton.
IIRC Sy liked Jennings and Sills both quite a bit.

Despite all the reasons folks are down on PS, you look at Darius Slayton, and going back to Theilen and Diggs, and wonder what PS can do to develop some WRs others didn't want much.

I'd rather develop 2-3 mid-rounders into a solid WR corps than invest a high pick - seems less likely to land a DIVA that way.
Mid rounders or of course waiver puckups

or low cost FAs.

Is White on our roster to PS now? That's quite a collection of WVU guys.
Wrong

White...
I Really like Tate
Festina Lente : 11/7/2019 12:38 pm : link
Tough, good hands, one of the best historic YAC, and seems like a winner.

He is NOT the problem with this team. He would be a very effective piece on a team with an actual filled-out roster.
should have
mdthedream : 11/7/2019 1:04 pm : link
claimed Gordon a big wr for free.
Sills
lawguy9801 : 11/7/2019 1:10 pm : link
is that the kid who committed to USC as a QB at 13 years old but flamed out and switched to WR? Or am I thinking of someone else?

He's pretty expensive for a guy that won't have an opportunity to be on a team with an actual filled-out roster for a while.

Yet another "let me make sure that I don't lose on the back page or WFAN" FA move by DG, which screams of John Mara's well-known sensitivity to the media. Tate makes sense for a team that is ready to win. He's dead money on this roster - he was the binkie that Gettleman tried to shove in the fanbase's mouth to quiet any noise about the OBJ trade, IMO.

You are thinking of David Sills and he is already on the Giants PS, right now.
