Teams are playing multiple WRs most of the time against us...most of the time against every team really. He's pulling a DL off the field to get a DB out there based on what offenses are doing. Which is why it is dumb that are we collecting 300lb DL in an era that teams are playing spread out. I agree that we should be getting LW out there more instead of Golden/Carter/X on run or neutral downs in sub packages though. But there's only so much these guys can do when our LBs and DBs are getting torched in the passing game and it makes soooo much sense to spread us out.
Why are we asking about the defensive allignment?
Rjanyg : 11/7/2019 12:12 pm : link
The issue is talent. If you think Golden, Carter and Ximines are traditional OLB you are wrong. Watch the game. They are in a 3 point stance quite often, basically a 4-3 DE. They are small for DE but when we are in Nickel Defense that is what happens. An interior DL leaves the field and a DB come on. You can call it a 2-4-5 or a 4-2-5. It is basically the same thing.

The issue is when we go with 3 OLB playing on a 4 man line. This won't work with the personnel we have.

The term Edge Rusher is either a DE or OLB in todays NFL. We need to start using this team and understand we need good EDGE players. Period.

Great post. It's crazy the amount of attention placed the alignments based on a very grey roster classification between OLB/DE...in the NFL in general and especially this defense. We are mostly playing 4 man fronts in these alignments, the problem is that 2 of Golden/Carter/X are basically playing end.

I'd argue they should've done this from the start, but certainly after they early struggles they should've adjusted to have:

Golden - Williams - Lawrence - Hill/Tomlinson

Carter - Ogletree - Mayo/Buchannon/Ballentine

Especially on 1st/2nd downs. Carter and even Golden were struggling at DE and couldn't maintain the edge, yet no adjustments were made to slow Elliott.

The adjustment should be to remove Mayo when they go to nickel, regardless of whether they are using a 3 or 4 man front. Carter's more athletic and better in coverage than Mayo, but was getting destroyed by the Cowboys OTs. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the big DL are faster than Mayo...
I agree adjustments should be made
AcesUp : 11/7/2019 1:03 pm : link
That's on Bettcher for sure, but there's no magic fix here. They'll be more stout up front but they'll also be much more predictable in their pressure and coverage packages. The likely outcome is a regression from an average to an anemic pass rush with teams carving us up through the air. We're not even in the clear against the run, teams can start running stretch and outside zone if you're plugging Tomlinson in at end.

The adjustment needs to be made though simply because a majority of our best defensive players play one position and the DC needs to find a way to get his best players on the field. 25% snaps for BJ Hill is ridiculous. A lot of that is on the GM though. It's hard to find snaps for 4 interior DL in a league that wants to run multiple WR sets. I get it's a work in progress but I'm genuinely concerned about his idea of roster construction in this era.

Shurmur said Nick Gates will play if RT Mike Remmers (back) can’t go. C Jon Halapio (hamstring) is a “ways away.” Spencer Pulley, who started nine games last year for the Giants, is the next man up.

The injury substitutions are moves I would have liked to see them make if everyone was healthy, so it kind of works out anyway.

Without both their starting CB's, unfortunately this may help us win

+1. We move between different formations all game long, like most teams do nowadays. There is no "one" formation, it depends on matchups and game situations. Formation isn't the issue, crappy coaching is.

Aren't those closely related? Good coaching puts you in the best formations to succeed. Bad coaching continues to run Golden/Carter out as DEs with Mayo/Ogletree/Buccannon at LB while you're getting gouged on the ground.

This was literally the dumbest thing ive ever seen a defense do. We have the worst coaching staff in football.

Think he wanted to play a 2-3-4 but realized that wasn't in his best interest........

Rather than reading. Connelly was diagnosing plays pre snap.

They're a step behind every play.
