How high is Amari Cooper on your wishlist?

Anakim : 11/7/2019 11:12 am
The way I see it, with Shep's future in doubt and with Golden Tate being a better fit in the slot, we need two outside receivers next year. Slayton, IMO, is more suited to be a downfield threat and a #4.

Just asking, but if Cooper reaches free agency, would you break the bank for him?
Yes
cjac : 11/7/2019 11:13 am : link
but as long as Shurmur is the HC it wont matter.
I don't think so
UConn4523 : 11/7/2019 11:15 am : link
I just don't trust his health. Very good WR, but i'd like to see us spend on OL and the pass rush first, draft a WR instead.
Not worth the money
ryanmkeane : 11/7/2019 11:15 am : link
he's a really good player, but tends to be oft injured and goes quiet in big games
I'd rather spend
LakeGeorgeGiant : 11/7/2019 11:18 am : link
the cash on defense and draft 2 or 3 receivers.
He's not on my wishlist
Jay on the Island : 11/7/2019 11:20 am : link
There were reports that Gruden traded him because he didn't like Cooper's drive. He was concerned about Cooper mailing it in once he receives a big contract.

He is too big of a risk for the Giants to take. Again the focus needs to be on fixing the offensive line first.
even if we lose Shep
Dinger : 11/7/2019 11:22 am : link
A wide receiver is so low for me. I am desperate for them to improve the OL (C, LT) and for ANY kind of LBer. A capable inside or an Edge. After that its Saftey. After that its a toss up between a WR, a good all around TE or CB depth/someone to supplant JJ. Cooper is down the road.

This, Slayton is a great piece moving forward. Sy said this is one of the best WR classes he has seen, let’s grab one or two young guys to develop long term with Jones. We have the vet in state here, unless we can grab someone like AJ Green at a discount restock and build through the draft.
I would love to see him in

Giants Blue, but Dallas has almost $90M of cap space, so I am sure both he and Dak will be resigned.

Just toying around with our roster next year:

QB - DJ
RB - Saquon
WR1 - Cooper
WR2 - Tee Higgins or Michael Pittman Jr. (second rounder) or TJ Vasher (third rounder)
Slot - Golden Tate
TE - Engram
LT - Andrew Thomas (first rounder)
LG - Will Hernandez
OC - don't know
RG - Kevin Zeitler
RT - Nate Solder
DE - Leonard Williams
NT - Dexter Lawrence
DE - BJ Hill/Tomlinson
EDGE - Ngakoue
EDGE - Carter/Ximines
ILB - Connelly
ILB - Shaq Thompson
CB - Beal
CB - Baker
Nickel - Ballentine
FS - Love

My guess if they draft an OT high in the draft and keep Solder, Solder will stay at LT while the young OT gets his feet wet at RT.

He isn’t.

You don’t trade a better player, eat his salary, only to sign a guy for more money.

I wouldn’t put it past Gettleman though...

I don't think they'll spend stupidly though. I think if Cooper's demands are unreasonable he'll make it to FA or get franchised.

What's obvious is that the Giants shouldn't be entering into any sort of bidding war for his services.

As an aside - I really thought the whole Mayock/Gruden thing in Oakland was destined for failure, but they've been better than I expected. Better than the Giants, sadly.
Dallas Has a lot of players hitting free agency
Archer : 11/7/2019 11:45 am : link
Here is a brief summary of the potential 2020 free agents:

Veterans: QB Cooper Rush, WR Amari Cooper, TE Blake Jarwin, OT La'el Collins, G Xavier Su'a-Filo, G/C Adam Redmond,DE Robert Quinn, DT Antwaun Woods, LB Sean Lee, LB Joe Thomas, CB Byron Jones, CB C.J. Goodwin, K Brett Maher

Class of 2016: QB Dak Prescott, DT Maliek Collins, CB Anthony Brown, CB Kavon Frazier, RB Darius Jackson

1-Year Contracts: RB Alfred Morris, WR Randall Cobb, WR Tavon Austin, TE Jason Witten, DE Kerry Hyder, DT Christian Covington, LB Justin March, S George Iloka, S Darian Thompson, LS L.P. Ladouceur

The Cowboys have approximately 11 significant players who will be free agents.
Cooper is the best route runner in the NFL...
bw in dc : 11/7/2019 11:47 am : link
Very appealing.

But fortunately for us this is a draft rich in WRs. WRs who are going to make big contributions in the NFL. So I think that will be the better market to solve for our WR issue.

This would be great but I doubt we get/can afford Cooper.
I don't think Dallas will let him leave
David B. : 11/7/2019 12:02 pm : link
He's due to torture the Giants for years.

But if he were available, I'd much rather get pass rushers, LBs, or OLs. They are all higher priorities.
Dallas Players
Archer : 11/7/2019 12:08 pm : link
If I am going after Dallas players I would pursue;
TE Blake Jarwin, OT La'el Collins, CB Byron Jones, and WR Tavon Austin.
My wishlist for now consists of only OL and LBs

I think that what we learned from the big contracts for JJ, Vernon
Ira : 11/7/2019 12:09 pm : link

KWALL2 : 11/7/2019 12:15 pm : link
Spend the money on OL and defense.

Cooper is good but not an elite WR. You don’t want to pay him like one. I hope Dallas does and they don’t have the $ to sign CB Jones.
We need linemen
Chip : 11/7/2019 12:15 pm : link
on both sides of the line. not WR. A big TE who can block and catch like Bavaro, Martellus Bennet.
i'd pretty much punt on receiver
Platos : 11/7/2019 12:16 pm : link
until the later rounds.

no receiver is going to make this team better if our offensive line is crap and our linebackers can't outrun a turtle.

OL+Defense should be the whole draft. look to FA for some young receivers.

^This x1000.

Cooper's not in the Julio, Thomas, Hopkins, Beckham class but if he hits free agency he's going to get $20M per season. You can get two legit LBs or a good OL and a LB for that money.

To be honest, my free agency plan would probably be to go after a C or RT, an ILB, and a FS (with LW also being re-signed). Use the draft for ER and/or LT and more WR depth.

Amari Cooper is the type of signing I'd avoid like crazy.

Like most of these topics when it comes to football evaluation, my conclusion is subjective. So my "evidence" is my eyes. Cooper has terrific ability to get in and out of cuts very smoothly and at different route distances.

Hey, at least

The receiving corps is one of the worst units on the team . They need an infusion of young cost-controlled talent.
He's not.
Torrag : 11/7/2019 1:08 pm : link
I'm not a believer in spending top dollars on FA WR. Even Plax when he was signed got less than expected on the open market because he had a bad reputation. For his three years with the Giants he earned a total of $15M.

The defense needs a lot of help, but they need receivers too. These guys aren't getting any separation.

I don't think Cooper is a good idea, but let's not pretend defense is the only problem.
Good lord no.
WalterSobchak : 11/7/2019 1:11 pm : link
I am convinced you do not spend top tier money (20 mill plus per season in this case) on a wr . Only positions that are worth top nfl money without question are Qb if great , a game changing edge rusher , and maybe a true lockdown cornerback. Other positions I would look at on a case by case basis if there is an elite player to sign . With factors being cap space available and other positions of need. Look at the Pats, the QB and Gilmore(and even he is a realatuve bargain) are their big $ contracts. Honestly the only 2 edge rushers I see now worthy of the big money is Donald and Mack. Basically , lets save our money for now and aqquire cheap manageble draft talent and any free agent money spent should be on cheaper up and coming free agents . We need to start making shrewed moves for a change if we are ever gonna see this ship of poo turned around.
'but they need receivers too'
Torrag : 11/7/2019 1:16 pm : link
Honestly as far as weapons and targets we've been stupid(tate suspension) and unhealthy(every other prime threat has missed multiple games) this season.

Now if Shep's career is in jeopardy we'll definitely need to re-invest in the position.
No shiny toys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BillT : 11/7/2019 1:21 pm : link
Ol, OL, OL then LB, LB.
I’m with the guys calling for OL & LB help, and I’d add edge rusher.
yatqb : 11/7/2019 1:52 pm : link
And I don’t understand people who worry about if a guy can play LOT. Get me a good RT and I’ll be thrilled. Just please add talent to the OL.

And if Scherf gets to FA jump on him. Get younger at RG or even see if he or Zeitler can play C. Anything to improve the talent level.
Cooper is injury prone - not playing vs. Vikings
joe48 : 11/7/2019 2:23 pm : link

Our QB
mdc1 : 11/7/2019 2:33 pm : link
Is not ready for playmakers, he can barely avoid
fumbling the ball each series. Turnover machine
I wouldn't spend another dollar/pick on any skill player

until the following needs are addressed.

Impact LT (1st round)
Impact RT (Conklin)
Center (2nd round/FA)
Edge (2nd round/FA)
Middle LB (2nd round 2020/FA)

It's time to address the offensive line and LBs with real solutions.

No more Remmers, Solders, Omamehs, Ogletrees, Martins, Halapios, Pulleys

I'm dubious of the excuses OAK is using for not signing their own FA's. With the NFL rule that teams have to put player bonus money in escrow, the word is that Davis is too cheap and/or poor to do that, so they trade away most of those guys.

I agree there are some red flags with Cooper, but I'd be hesitant to use the Raiders as any litmus test.

Draft LT LB and TE

When the OL sucks ass and has sucked ass for a decade.

Cap money needs to be pumped into the OL and front 7 on defense. That should be plan.

To the merits of the player, no I wouldn’t pay him even if the trenches were straightened out. He’s a bum hunter WR — huge games vs bad corners and vanishes vs good corners. Hell he was invisible Monday night until he got on Baker and he blew the coverage.

I think Baker actually blanketed him for much of the game - until the blown coverage!
