The way I see it, with Shep's future in doubt and with Golden Tate being a better fit in the slot, we need two outside receivers next year. Slayton, IMO, is more suited to be a downfield threat and a #4.
Just asking, but if Cooper reaches free agency, would you break the bank for him?
He is too big of a risk for the Giants to take. Again the focus needs to be on fixing the offensive line first.
This, Slayton is a great piece moving forward. Sy said this is one of the best WR classes he has seen, let’s grab one or two young guys to develop long term with Jones. We have the vet in state here, unless we can grab someone like AJ Green at a discount restock and build through the draft.
Just toying around with our roster next year:
QB - DJ
RB - Saquon
WR1 - Cooper
WR2 - Tee Higgins or Michael Pittman Jr. (second rounder) or TJ Vasher (third rounder)
Slot - Golden Tate
TE - Engram
LT - Andrew Thomas (first rounder)
LG - Will Hernandez
OC - don't know
RG - Kevin Zeitler
RT - Nate Solder
DE - Leonard Williams
NT - Dexter Lawrence
DE - BJ Hill/Tomlinson
EDGE - Ngakoue
EDGE - Carter/Ximines
ILB - Connelly
ILB - Shaq Thompson
CB - Beal
CB - Baker
Nickel - Ballentine
FS - Love
SS - Peppers
Quote:
A wide receiver is so low for me. I am desperate for them to improve the OL (C, LT) and for ANY kind of LBer. A capable inside or an Edge. After that its Saftey. After that its a toss up between a WR, a good all around TE or CB depth/someone to supplant JJ. Cooper is down the road.

I wouldn’t put it past Gettleman though...
I don't think they'll spend stupidly though. I think if Cooper's demands are unreasonable he'll make it to FA or get franchised.
What's obvious is that the Giants shouldn't be entering into any sort of bidding war for his services.
As an aside - I really thought the whole Mayock/Gruden thing in Oakland was destined for failure, but they've been better than I expected. Better than the Giants, sadly.
Veterans: QB Cooper Rush, WR Amari Cooper, TE Blake Jarwin, OT La'el Collins, G Xavier Su'a-Filo, G/C Adam Redmond,DE Robert Quinn, DT Antwaun Woods, LB Sean Lee, LB Joe Thomas, CB Byron Jones, CB C.J. Goodwin, K Brett Maher
Class of 2016: QB Dak Prescott, DT Maliek Collins, CB Anthony Brown, CB Kavon Frazier, RB Darius Jackson
1-Year Contracts: RB Alfred Morris, WR Randall Cobb, WR Tavon Austin, TE Jason Witten, DE Kerry Hyder, DT Christian Covington, LB Justin March, S George Iloka, S Darian Thompson, LS L.P. Ladouceur
The Cowboys have approximately 11 significant players who will be free agents.
But fortunately for us this is a draft rich in WRs. WRs who are going to make big contributions in the NFL. So I think that will be the better market to solve for our WR issue.

This would be great but I doubt we get/can afford Cooper.
But if he were available, I'd much rather get pass rushers, LBs, or OLs. They are all higher priorities.
TE Blake Jarwin, OT La'el Collins, CB Byron Jones, and WR Tavon Austin.
Cooper is good but not an elite WR. You don’t want to pay him like one. I hope Dallas does and they don’t have the $ to sign CB Jones.
no receiver is going to make this team better if our offensive line is crap and our linebackers can't outrun a turtle.
OL+Defense should be the whole draft. look to FA for some young receivers.
The need to draft defense early and often has been glaring for years .
But, as always , wr envy rears its annual head.

Wait, what? Do you have evidence to support the notion he's the 'best route runner in the NFL'?

^This x1000.
Cooper's not in the Julio, Thomas, Hopkins, Beckham class but if he hits free agency he's going to get $20M per season. You can get two legit LBs or a good OL and a LB for that money.
To be honest, my free agency plan would probably be to go after a C or RT, an ILB, and a FS (with LW also being re-signed). Use the draft for ER and/or LT and more WR depth.
Amari Cooper is the type of signing I'd avoid like crazy.

Very appealing.

Like most of these topics when it comes to football evaluation, my conclusion is subjective. So my "evidence" is my eyes. Cooper has terrific ability to get in and out of cuts very smoothly and at different route distances.
The receiving corps is one of the worst units on the team . They need an infusion of young cost-controlled talent.

The defense needs a lot of help, but they need receivers too. These guys aren't getting any separation.
I don't think Cooper is a good idea, but let's not pretend defense is the only problem.
Now if Shep's career is in jeopardy we'll definitely need to re-invest in the position.
And if Scherf gets to FA jump on him. Get younger at RG or even see if he or Zeitler can play C. Anything to improve the talent level.
fumbling the ball each series. Turnover machine
Impact LT (1st round)
Impact RT (Conklin)
Center (2nd round/FA)
Edge (2nd round/FA)
Middle LB (2nd round 2020/FA)
It's time to address the offensive line and LBs with real solutions.
No more Remmers, Solders, Omamehs, Ogletrees, Martins, Halapios, Pulleys
I'm dubious of the excuses OAK is using for not signing their own FA's. With the NFL rule that teams have to put player bonus money in escrow, the word is that Davis is too cheap and/or poor to do that, so they trade away most of those guys.
I agree there are some red flags with Cooper, but I'd be hesitant to use the Raiders as any litmus test.
Remmers and Halpio .
Take the best edge rusher and a FS or Inside LB .
Thats Free agencey .
Draft LT LB and TE
I would use Engram to move up int the draft or aquire
another 2nd round pick .
Cap money needs to be pumped into the OL and front 7 on defense. That should be plan.
To the merits of the player, no I wouldn’t pay him even if the trenches were straightened out. He’s a bum hunter WR — huge games vs bad corners and vanishes vs good corners. Hell he was invisible Monday night until he got on Baker and he blew the coverage.
Boy that description sounds familiar!

I think Baker actually blanketed him for much of the game - until the blown coverage!
