NFT: Belin Wall 1989 - 30 years

GiantsUA : 11/8/2019 7:52 am
Well they blew the horns
And the walls came down
They'd all been warned
And the walls came down
They just stood there laughing
They're not laughing anymore
The walls came down
Sanctuary fades
congregation splits
Nightly military raids
The congregation splits
It's a song of assassins
Ringin' in your ears
We got terrorist thinking
Playing on fears
Well they blew the horns
And the walls came down
They'd all been warned
But the walls came down
I don't think there are any Russians
And there ain't no Yanks
Just corporate criminals
playin' with tanks

A great moment for humanity.
I was living in West Germany...

at the time. NOBODY saw this coming. I was stationed there and commanding an Army Air Defense unit, we were all chest deep in the Cold War and when the wall came down we all looked at each other and said, 'what the hell just happened?' NOBODY had the answers.

The only other comparable time when I thought we (the US military) were shockingly strategically clueless was September 11, 2001

worked in Army intelligence.

He was fluent in German and was stationed at a "listening" post in Berlin - early 1960's -

This was crazy. I was 33 at the time. All I ever knew my whole life was that wall and the division of Berlin. Watching it come down was surreal.

One morning in June
some twenty years ago
I was born a rich man's son
I had everything that money could buy,
but freedom I had none
I've been looking for freedom
I've been looking so long
I've been looking for freedom
Still the search goes on
I've been looking for freedom
since I left my home town
I've been looking for freedom
Still it can't be found
I headed down the track
my baggage on my back
I left the city far behind
Walking down that road
with my heavy load
trying to find some ease of mind
Father said: "You'll be sorry, son,
if you leave your home this way
And when you realize
the freedom money buys
You'll come running home someday"
I've been looking for freedom
I've been looking so long
I've been looking for freedom
Still the search goes on
I've been…

Wow, that's crazy. I knew it was a surprise, but not like that! Maybe the USSR found out that BamaBlue was in the 'hood!

If I recall from the walking tour of Berlin I did a long time ago, the East German leader was being interviewed by Western journalists and he was basically cross examined hard to the point where he said yes East Germans could cross into west Germany without having to show their IDs. And that was it

Escaped from East Germany before the wall was completed! She said it was the scariest moment in her life and nothing worries her anymore!
Sheer bravery!!

You can probably add Pear Harbor to that. Not totally clueless but we did not read the signs like we should of.

I was in the Air Force during the 80s as a C5 Crew Chief/flight mechanic. I used to fly into Rhein Main and Ramstein allot, among other places but Germany was where you really sensed the cold war atmosphere. I always felt that it kept us and the Russians in check, nothing was going to come it and nothing did. Ultimately Gorbechev and Reagan became friends.

press was terrified Gorbachev was going to abuse Uncle Ronnie at the negotiation table in Reykjavik? I remember SNL did a skit where Reagan was sleeping during a Cabinet meeting and the minute they all left, he "woke up" sharp as a tack...

The Soviet collapse was stunning. Just like in WW2 we out produced the Axis, especially Japan, Reagan economically found their Achilles heel....
