Anyone in favor of just ditching the XP kick...

and moving to a 1 point conversion from the 2 or a 2 point conversion from the 5 (or something like that; maybe 1pt from the 5 yd line and 2 pts from the 10 yd line).

I think it would be more exciting and games wouldn't come down to who has the best journeyman kicker.
I thought it was exciting that the Raiders kicker
ZogZerg : 11/8/2019 9:56 am : link
missed the XP, giving the chargers a chance to win with a long FG. Especially when they panned to Gruden, where he basically fired the kicker.

Teams don't have to kick it if they don't want to.

Are you eliminating FGs as well?
If not, then what's the point? You still need a kicker.
I didn't say eliminate FG
DC Gmen Fan : 11/8/2019 10:01 am : link
just eliminate XP kicks.

Make the offense earn 1 or 2 points
Just leave it in, sheesh.

I like the new XP rules as it stands now
figgy2989 : 11/8/2019 10:04 am : link
There adds a level of uncertainty to every XP kick. In the past, these were essentially automatic. With games on the line and kicking what amounts to a 33 yard kick, anything can happen.

XP is part of the game.
johnnyb : 11/8/2019 10:05 am : link
I was in favor of the rule to make the kick longer so not so automatic. A missed XP could be the difference between winning and losing, as mentioned last night the miss by the Raiders allowed SD a chance.
To the OP
Tuckrule : 11/8/2019 10:10 am : link
It doesn’t make sense to eliminate the xp but still keep field goals in the game of football. As long as they are kicking field goals the extra point should remain. Moving it back was a great move.
Interesting perspectives

I'm surprised. I figured more of you would rather see offensive plays rather than kicks for XP.

Thanks for the responses.
eliminate it altogehter
bluepepper : 11/8/2019 10:15 am : link
teams automatically get 1 after every TD unless they choose to go for 2. Nobody wants the outcome of a game decided by a kicker missing an XP.

Keep FG since you want teams to have a shot at points if they get the ball deep into enemy territory but either narrow the goal posts or push them back another 5 yards. Kicking is the most boring part of the game and the kickers are one trick ponies barely part of the team. Anything you can do do reduce their impact on the game is a good thing IMO.
if you aren't eliminating FG's
UConn4523 : 11/8/2019 10:15 am : link
then I see no reason to eliminate XP's. The rule change pushing it back is actually one of the few new rules I like and it gives you what you want - a legitimate decision to go for 2 or 1.

This is kind of the root of the idea. Thanks for putting it more eloquently.
but what's the difference between losing the game

on a 33 yard FG or a 33 yard XP? Both scenario's the Kicker lost the game.
Love the PAT option
djstat : 11/8/2019 10:24 am : link
Kick and get 1 point or go for 2.

The new rule has ensured the PAT was not a wasted play. It means something. Coaches now strategize whether to kick or go for 2. LOVE IT

a 33 yard PAT is the coaches choice. Part of the game. I think it is great a game can be lost on it. Why not? Coach could have gone for 2 and had the ball on the 2 yard line.

Totally fair question and there's an answer that I really can't articulate well. Maybe because the FG is a scoring drive strategy and not a "tack on point". Someone else can probably argue it better than I can.
i hear what you are saying
UConn4523 : 11/8/2019 10:29 am : link
but the XP is still a scoring choice. And lastnight the missed XP didn't cost them because the other phase of the game showed up and got in River's face - he couldn't step into any throws.

Prior to the new rule I'd be more open to eliminating XP's but right now its adding a lot of strategy to the end of games, IMO.
Eventually the league will phase it out by choice
Giants in 07 : 11/8/2019 10:32 am : link
No one will kick XPs unless it's strategically advantageous, like to make an 8 point game a two possession game.

I'm surprised it has't begun yet

Only if you're team is the one that loses. If your team wins because of a missed XP then most people are all for it.
No but the onside has to go
V.I.G. : 11/8/2019 11:25 am : link
Make it a one play on offense to get a first down. 4th and 25 or something.
NO.

Even if I was it'd be way down on the list

I think they need to do something about the onsides kick first.
XPs are still made at about 94%
giants#1 : 11/8/2019 12:14 pm : link
Can't find updated stats, but 2 PATs were converted around 47% through the middle of last season, so the expected points are roughly the same.

I'd actually move the XP back about 5-10 yards, to entice a few more coaches to go for it more often (early it games, not when they're forced to). Otherwise, I like it.

And I agree with the other poster that something needs to be tweaked with onside kicks. Teams used to recover them ~40% (IIRC) of the time, but I think that's down to 10-15%. I think the old percentage made things exciting, whereas now its basically pointless. They already have 2 sets of rules for the PAT determined by a pre-snap decision, so why not let teams similarly announce pre-kickoff that they are doing an onside kick and line up the old formation. Just prohibit kicks beyond 30 yards or something in this scenario. (Surprise kicks they can use the current formation).

I actually love that. Giggle my ass off. As long as it isn't the Giants.
If the NFL wants to make the XP or chip-shot field goals interesting,
Diver_Down : 11/8/2019 1:12 pm : link
they should mandate that any XP attempt or FG where the line of scrimmage is at the 15 yard line or closer, then the kick must be made as a drop-kick.
Leave it in. A missed extra point is usually not critical but often
Ivan15 : 11/8/2019 6:14 pm : link
influences how the rest of the game is played.

Making it a running or passing play from further back would create too much uncertainty and would really slow the game down. Remember that every scoring play gets reviewed.

That would be cool.

There are a few Australians in the league already. :)
I kind of like it as is

I'm still surprised that teams don't go for more 2pt conversions in neutral situations, the math checks out to do so.

They do need to do something about the onside kicks, I think the Bears are the only team to convert one this year and they did so twice in the same game. Nothing but goose eggs outside of that. The easy fix is a "4th" and 15 from your own 35, convert that keep the ball or the opposing team gets the ball at the spot.
the whole concept
Enzo : 11/9/2019 12:13 pm : link
of an "extra point" or a "conversion" is weirdo nonsense from the 1800s. Just give teams 7 points for the TD and go right to the kickoff. In just about every other sport, you score and then the other team gets the ball.
Just giving 7 takes away a huge strategic element, IMO
UConn4523 : 11/9/2019 12:49 pm : link
if they went that route it would have to be with the option to go for an extra point (not kicking, use current 2pt conversion yardage) to get 8 or fail the attempt and get 6.

Knocking back the extra point fg has been more enjoyable than I thought it would be so I don’t think the rule needs changing.
I think teams should get an extra point for...
Milton : 11/10/2019 5:50 am : link
...punching it in from the one yard line. They should get two extra points if they can punch it in from the four yard line. Three extra points from the nine yard line. Four extra points from the 16-yard line. Five extra points from the 25-yard line. Six extra points from the 36-yard line. And guess how many points if they can throw a successful Hail Mary from the 49-yard line?
