and moving to a 1 point conversion from the 2 or a 2 point conversion from the 5 (or something like that; maybe 1pt from the 5 yd line and 2 pts from the 10 yd line).
I think it would be more exciting and games wouldn't come down to who has the best journeyman kicker.
Teams don't have to kick it if they don't want to.
Are you eliminating FGs as well?
If not, then what's the point? You still need a kicker.
Make the offense earn 1 or 2 points
Thanks for the responses.
Keep FG since you want teams to have a shot at points if they get the ball deep into enemy territory but either narrow the goal posts or push them back another 5 yards. Kicking is the most boring part of the game and the kickers are one trick ponies barely part of the team. Anything you can do do reduce their impact on the game is a good thing IMO.
This is kind of the root of the idea. Thanks for putting it more eloquently.
The new rule has ensured the PAT was not a wasted play. It means something. Coaches now strategize whether to kick or go for 2. LOVE IT

Nobody wants the outcome of a game decided by a kicker missing an XP.

Totally fair question and there's an answer that I really can't articulate well. Maybe because the FG is a scoring drive strategy and not a "tack on point". Someone else can probably argue it better than I can.
Prior to the new rule I'd be more open to eliminating XP's but right now its adding a lot of strategy to the end of games, IMO.
I'm surprised it has't begun yet
Only if you're team is the one that loses. If your team wins because of a missed XP then most people are all for it.
I'd actually move the XP back about 5-10 yards, to entice a few more coaches to go for it more often (early it games, not when they're forced to). Otherwise, I like it.
And I agree with the other poster that something needs to be tweaked with onside kicks. Teams used to recover them ~40% (IIRC) of the time, but I think that's down to 10-15%. I think the old percentage made things exciting, whereas now its basically pointless. They already have 2 sets of rules for the PAT determined by a pre-snap decision, so why not let teams similarly announce pre-kickoff that they are doing an onside kick and line up the old formation. Just prohibit kicks beyond 30 yards or something in this scenario. (Surprise kicks they can use the current formation).
I actually love that. Giggle my ass off. As long as it isn't the Giants.
Making it a running or passing play from further back would create too much uncertainty and would really slow the game down. Remember that every scoring play gets reviewed.
That would be cool.
There are a few Australians in the league already. :)
They do need to do something about the onside kicks, I think the Bears are the only team to convert one this year and they did so twice in the same game. Nothing but goose eggs outside of that. The easy fix is a "4th" and 15 from your own 35, convert that keep the ball or the opposing team gets the ball at the spot.
Knocking back the extra point fg has been more enjoyable than I thought it would be so I don’t think the rule needs changing.
