Who was better: Chris Snee or Ron Stone?

nyjuggernaut2 : 11/8/2019 10:58 am
Talking this morning with a co-workers about our beloved Giants and how disastrous the OL has been for a number of years now. We both started reminiscing about when the OL was solid, and some of the great players that anchored the line. I mentioned how I long for the days of guys like William Roberts, Bart Oates, Chris Snee etc, and said how to me Snee was the best linemen the team has had in this millennium. He brought up that he’d take Ron Stone over Chris Snee.

I ended up looking up both players stats, and they are similar in all-pro and pro-bowl selections. So the question I have is, if you were building an OL and had to choose between either Snee or Stone, who you taken?

Although I will say that Stone had it tougher, playing on a much less talented line.
Snee

Borderline HoF player.
Ron Stone was very good
truebluelarry : 11/8/2019 11:07 am : link
but Snee at his peak was awesome.
Snee at his best was better...
Big Blue Blogger : 11/8/2019 11:07 am : link
...but I think Stone was very good for a longer span.
Snee. With him and McKenzie on that side
Jimmy Googs : 11/8/2019 11:08 am : link
our running backs really had heavy production running to the right...
Was going to suggest Snee for quality but Stone for longevity
jcn56 : 11/8/2019 11:10 am : link
but that discards the fact that Stone started off a backup. In the end, Snee started exactly one game less than Stone.
Snee was a road grader...

..Stone was excellent, one of the best guards the team ever had, but did not possess the ability Snee had to move people, create lanes and demolish at the second level.
Snee....

by a fair margin. He was also the victim of about half a dozen ghost calls in big spots where he pancaked quality opponents including Wilfork in the Superbowl.
if it weren't for injuries

Snee would be a HOF.
Ron Stone Jr. plays for WSU

Snee

Snee was all pro in several seasons and before injuries was regarded as the best or near the best guard in football
Absolutely Snee

Remember when we used to draft OL in the first 2 rounds and they actually turned out to be good players? Those were the days.

I can't believe I remember people on this board actually complaining about Luke Pettigout back in the day. I mean he was no HOF don't get me wrong, but Nate Solder makes Luke look like Jonathon Ogden.

Then again, Ereck Flowers made Nate Solder look like Walter Jones.
I liked Stone...

But Snee was significantly better. At least, until the elbow injury

Stone was a very good run blocker but below average pass blocker
Laughable

Like who was Don Mattingly or Duke Maas. I think Seubert was better than Stone also

Snee was a borderline hall of fame level player.

There's rightfully a lot of nostalgia for Snee, but Ron Stone was a very good guard.

His peak was probably a little lower than Snee, but his peak was very good. He also didn't completely fall off like Snee.

It's a lot closer than some here are posting.

Snee - I can't believe some of these comparisons
PatersonPlank : 11/8/2019 10:47 pm : link
Why would anyone thing otherwise? Its like who was better, Montana or Kerry Collins (now someone will say Collins just watch)

Kerry Collins. .........Didn’t want to disappoint you😄

Actually if I had to win 1 game, Montana might be the all time pick

At this point that's debatable.
Oh for cryin out loud

Ron Stone was a good rum blocker but wasn’t athletic enough to be a good pass blocker. Snee was a pro bowl caliber player.
Stone was good
Banks : 11/9/2019 8:05 pm : link
and the only consistent player on our line while he was here. Snee was arguably the best on a very good line. Snee was good immediately and dominant by year 2.
