Surprised no one has brought this up...see the highlighted comments:
“Leonard is not just a run defender, not just a pass rusher. He’s a legitimate three-down player.”
Although the four defensive linemen have similar attributes, Gettleman does not consider them interchangeable.
“They’re all different,” he said.
“Dalvin is a powerful point of attack run player. Leonard is a little more linear, but he’s long. Him, Dexter and B.J. all have run-pass ability. While the style of play has evolved, you have to do the same basics. You have to run the ball, you have to stop the run, because if you don’t stop the run, you’re not getting to third and long. You’re not getting to obvious passing downs. This gives us a real strong rotation. You just roll them in and out, which makes it very difficult for the opposing team.”

He singles out Tomlinson as a one-dimensional run-stuffer by calling him a "Run player"
Then he states that Leonard/Dexter/BJ, all 3 of them, are versatile players who can play both Run and Pass.
Based on these comments...one has to conclude what Dalvin Tomlinson is the odd man out. Of the 4 DL mentioned, Tomlinson is the only one Gettleman did not acquire.

He loves D-Tackles who can Run-stop and Pass-rush, not just one-dimensional guys.
He loves Guards who can Run-block and Pass-block (see Hernandez and Zeitler, see Norwell and Turner in Carolina)
So...you agree that Dalvin Tomlinson's skill-set is unlike the other 3, then?
Jim Burt another great example...
And as you guys say one great olb/edge/4/3de. But that's a 'lb' on the roster.
Unless the lighter '3/4 des' can play on the edge well....why keep any of them?
With better LBs, Dex, Williams, Hill, Tomlinson and a NT can function well.
For years now, our opponents feast in the middle of the field against our slow LBs. Connelly looked like a decent option at that spot but he got hurt.
Not much else behind them. Carter, Ogletree, and Mayo have all been average at best.
As far as Bethea, perhaps Father Time has claimed another victory but he’s been very bad.
If we were trading draft picks, I’d have liked to made an upgrade in those positions rather than swapping Williams and Tomlinson.
football equivalent of wine cork sniffing
What is our current defense? I still have no idea what we are trying to impose on the offense. The only thing worse than this defense is the trade for Leonard Williams.
You don't have to put on your tin hat to realize that the one player on that list who he didn't include in his run/pass versatility list was the one drafted by Reese.

not a diss, just stating a fact. Players like Erik Howard, Chris Canty, Damon Harrison, etc. can be good players without being pass rushers.
Jim Burt another great example...
Good days with Howard and Burt
So why would anyone consider him a pass rusher? Just not his thing, the same goes for a lot of other good players in the NFL.
Tomlinson will leave after next year, and add another position to the pile to upgrade.
One of us might have been able to churn out a decent rushing game against this line last Monday night.
Pathetic.
Every fucking play in the first qtr for the Cowboys gained 8+ yards.
Carl Banks was just choosing who to blame more...
I'll take Banks take on it, versus angry internet fan
But the D-line got moved very easily creating that space, and they weren't getting off blocks either. No Sacks, low tackles for loss.
The elite Dallas O-line ate them for lunch...
At the end of the day, you still need linebackers and sometime a SS who can stuff the run also. Consider that the offense has 6 sometimes 7 guys blocking, 3 guys no matter how good can't deal with all those blockers. Other people need to step up and make plays.
The Giants don't have LBs that can run defend well, nor can they cover the middle on passing downs. Frankly, I'm not quite sure what the the Giants LBs are good at... Modeling the uniforms maybe?
Why is Canty in this group?
Chris Canty was a slippery pass rusher.
He most certainly could rush the QB
Did he draft Tomlinson?
He has a very specific profile for his D-Tackles.
So why would anyone consider him a pass rusher? Just not his thing, the same goes for a lot of other good players in the NFL.
Why would you judge a D-Tackle by his sack total?
Tomlinson will leave after next year, and add another position to the pile to upgrade.
Tomlinson is being replaced by Leonard Williams, who will sign extension with NYG.
The 3 man front is LW/BJ/Dexter

Points out their strengths and goes on to say how strong a rotation it gives them. How exactly do you get Dalvin being an "odd man out" from what he said?

No but he talks specifically about a rotation and stopping the run on early downs which is what he described as a strength for Tomlinson.
What makes you think he's not part of the rotation other than who he was drafted by? It sure didn't sound like DG was dissing DT to me, and he liked his depth/rotation possibilities on the D Line.

The guy whose snaps plummeted last week was Hill, and the guy who lost a hat was McIntosh.

For such a smart guy you seem very unaware that most teams rotate on the DL. They need more than 3.
Not sure whats going on with BJ Hill but with zero sacks
after having like 7 sacks ? the year before . Now we add
another DT with two picks and we added Lawrence .
We have jack shit at LB FS Edge whats the plan ?
Cut some of the smaller "3/4 ends" , such as Pierre, who we just cut, and allow our current 4 to rotate at that, mixing in the two gapper situationally.

Dalvin will not be with the NYG beyond his rookie contract.
The writing is on the wall

Dalvin: "Run player"
Leonard/BJ/Dex: "Run-Pass players"
Gettleman likes versatility.
One guy isn't versatile.

"If a D-Tackle can't flip his hips, he will never be able to rush the passer"
This comment was a shot at both Snacks and Mini-Snacks (Tomlinson)

He traded Snacks (early down run stopper) for a 5th round pick.
Tomlinson = Mini Snacks.
He just doesn't value this type of player.
but i don't think tomlinson sees a second contract.
