Gettleman low key dissed Dalvin Tomlinson...

mjx1990 : 11/8/2019 7:35 pm
Surprised no one has brought this up...see the highlighted comments:

“Leonard is not just a run defender, not just a pass rusher. He’s a legitimate three-down player.”

Although the four defensive linemen have similar attributes, Gettleman does not consider them interchangeable.

“They’re all different,” he said. “Dalvin is a powerful point of attack run player. Leonard is a little more linear, but he’s long. Him, Dexter and B.J. all have run-pass ability. While the style of play has evolved, you have to do the same basics. You have to run the ball, you have to stop the run, because if you don’t stop the run, you’re not getting to third and long. You’re not getting to obvious passing downs. This gives us a real strong rotation. You just roll them in and out, which makes it very difficult for the opposing team.”

----------

He singles out Tomlinson as a one-dimensional run-stuffer by calling him a "Run player"

Then he states that Leonard/Dexter/BJ, all 3 of them, are versatile players who can play both Run and Pass.

Based on these comments...one has to conclude what Dalvin Tomlinson is the odd man out. Of the 4 DL mentioned, Tomlinson is the only one Gettleman did not acquire.

Gettleman specializes in D-Tackle and Guard play
mjx1990 : 11/8/2019 7:38 pm : link
Versatility is the key.

He loves D-Tackles who can Run-stop and Pass-rush, not just one-dimensional guys.

He loves Guards who can Run-block and Pass-block (see Hernandez and Zeitler, see Norwell and Turner in Carolina)
'low key dissed'

You're reaching for this one. I don't think there was a slight there of any kind. Describing players skillsets doesn't imply any stigma.

So...you agree that Dalvin Tomlinson's skill-set is unlike the other 3, then?

when LW and BJ Hill are both sitting there with goose eggs in the sack column and Tomlinson has one less than Lawrence at 2, you come to wonder how much you should trust the guy that just gave up a 3rd and a 4th to sign Williams to a contract extension.

I wish he was a good run defender. He's not even that. He's a JAG. He won't see a second contract with the Giants. As a second rounder, you could say bust.

5 is a good roster number for DTs
idiotsavant : 11/8/2019 10:32 pm : link
We could use one more, a pure NT.

And as you guys say one great olb/edge/4/3de. But that's a 'lb' on the roster.

Unless the lighter '3/4 des' can play on the edge well....why keep any of them?

With better LBs, Dex, Williams, Hill, Tomlinson and a NT can function well.
Tomlinson
k-five : 11/8/2019 11:23 pm : link
Is a true DT, not a NT. Leonard Williams could probably play anywhere along the line effectively. But most of these guys are really DTs, IMO, so their true abilities are limited in our current defense.
My whole issue is:
PetesHereNow : 11/9/2019 12:29 am : link
Is the improvement between Tomlinson to Williams more beneficial to the team than better play from the LB or FS position?

For years now, our opponents feast in the middle of the field against our slow LBs. Connelly looked like a decent option at that spot but he got hurt.

Not much else behind them. Carter, Ogletree, and Mayo have all been average at best.

As far as Bethea, perhaps Father Time has claimed another victory but he’s been very bad.

If we were trading draft picks, I’d have liked to made an upgrade in those positions rather than swapping Williams and Tomlinson.

What is our current defense? I still have no idea what we are trying to impose on the offense. The only thing worse than this defense is the trade for Leonard Williams.

You don't have to put on your tin hat to realize that the one player on that list who he didn't include in his run/pass versatility list was the one drafted by Reese.
Look Leonard
mdthedream : 11/9/2019 7:08 am : link
doesn't have to have sacks just needs to put pressure on the QB and other players cleanup. The Giants have tied for 16th in sacks only three 3 out of 8th.

the passrush has improved a lot and if we improve in coverage it will even get better.

Tomlinson has 2.5 sacks in 41 games played
Biteymax22 : 11/9/2019 8:12 am : link
Which means when you average things out, he averages just under 1 sack per season.

So why would anyone consider him a pass rusher? Just not his thing, the same goes for a lot of other good players in the NFL.

pass rushing isn't DT's strength

But he pushes the pocket, which is an ignored aspect of pass rushing. And he has gotten pressure. And, Giants do not always play 3 man fronts. and, like Parcells a long tme ago "the big guys get tired" so roptaion is important

I agree that there was good yardage gained from cutbacks
Jimmy Googs : 11/9/2019 10:03 am : link
particularly on their outside zone runs. The LBs were non-value added all night...no question.

But the D-line got moved very easily creating that space, and they weren't getting off blocks either. No Sacks, low tackles for loss.

The elite Dallas O-line ate them for lunch...

The problem with DL that are good run stuffers
.McL. : 11/9/2019 11:41 am : link
is that it doesn't guarantee that your team will be goo at stuffing the run...

At the end of the day, you still need linebackers and sometime a SS who can stuff the run also. Consider that the offense has 6 sometimes 7 guys blocking, 3 guys no matter how good can't deal with all those blockers. Other people need to step up and make plays.

The Giants don't have LBs that can run defend well, nor can they cover the middle on passing downs. Frankly, I'm not quite sure what the the Giants LBs are good at... Modeling the uniforms maybe?

No but he talks specifically about a rotation and stopping the run on early downs which is what he described as a strength for Tomlinson.

What makes you think he's not part of the rotation other than who he was drafted by? It sure didn't sound like DG was dissing DT to me, and he liked his depth/rotation possibilities on the D Line.

It's not a hard and fast rule and we could use one true two gapping NT monster type.

Cut some of the smaller "3/4 ends" , such as Pierre, who we just cut, and allow our current 4 to rotate at that, mixing in the two gapper situationally.

Leonard/BJ/Dex: "Run-Pass players"
