How much more can you watch this year?

Ozarkman : 11/9/2019 12:21 pm
Been a fan since the late 60's. I watched every minute of every game in the 70's....brutal! These past several years have been as bad or worse to watch. I semi checked out after the Lions game. Oct and we're done....again. I'll watch if I have nothing better to do and will turn it off if its another bad game. No longer giving the kind of commitment I used to. This team has earned the worst label I think a team can have....irrelevant. Anyone else feel this way? Or maybe I'm just a grumpy old man.

Will watch every game for whatever positive progress to be gleaned

Canít watch and be concerned about wins and losses. Past that now.
OP had expectations too high
giantstock : 11/9/2019 2:07 pm : link
You had ot either ignore or believe way too much to believe they wouldn't be bad. It's not just one thing but it was the accumulation from below:

1--- You had to believe in the coaching staff.

2-- You had to believe that 4 of teh 5 wins vs backup Qb's from last year was irrelevant.

3--- You had to believe that their end of season performance meant a damn thing.

4--- You had to believe that by replacing an awful wheeler with a bad Remmers and replacing a bad Pulley with a bad Halapio meant a damn thing. The RT and the center are 2nd and 3 most important OL positions.

5--- You had to believe in preaseason hype. For some reason there's a big deal thought of preaseason.

6--- you had to believe that the youngest team in football wouldn't have significant growing pains.

In summary you have a poorly coached team- and was extremely awful last year that didn't do a lot in FA and are the youngest team in the NFL - ofc you are going to suck. You hang in one game vs the Pats then bow a game vs Zona. That's what lousy coached youngest teams dooooo.

I try to watch specifics

DL play....should start being a strength.

DB should start playing better. Ballentine is much better then Haley.
We need a replacment for Bethea.

I hope Pulley makea better defensive calls....Halapio and Jones were doing a poor job

Is it really better than the 70's? At least the Giants had a defense back then.

Way worse - before free agency, it took forever to turn things around. Good teams stayed good for years. Now adays, 2 good draft/FA years and your back.
Agree with OP

I have the same background from the late 60s and the terrible 70s. Dropping the ticket next year. Certain things you do not want to repeat.
I'll keep watching every game. Gut wrenching at times but makes

I have tix. Not attending the Eagles game, too many knuckleheads from Philly drive up.

I will likely be attending the Packer and Dolphin games.

I will watch the away games on TV. If I have time, I will watch live. If not, I definitely view via DVR. At this point, not budgeting time if thereís something else to do during game time (which is mostly anything else lol).
Still watch....
John In CO : 11/9/2019 2:48 pm : link
Been a fan since 1976; first game I attended was the first win in Giants stadium. So they stunk when I started watching and they stink now. But there has been a lot of successes in between. There's always hope. But I will admit as I get a little older that the losses dont affect me like they did back when I was in my teens and 20's. A Giants loss used to stick with me for the entire week; now, not so much. But that is pretty much all sports to me. If im not playing then I have no control over the situation, so its not even worth getting upset about if there is nothing I can do about it. If they win, fantastic, if they lose...try again next week. And hope that management somehow makes the right moves to improve for the future.
Acting as a spoiler against Eagles would be awesome

I torture myself every week in hopes of seeing anything. Watching the Giants now is essentially like looking for Bigfoot.
There are two questions for me:
81_Great_Dane : 11/9/2019 3:21 pm : link
How much more of the Giants can I watch?: Probably a lot. Though I'm disappointed that they're not making more progress, and I'm losing patience, and I'm disgusted watching the same defensive problems year after goddam year... The games are watchable. I have some hope.

How much more of the anger, name-calling and negativity on BBI can I take? Less and less. That's not a swipe at Ozarkman or anyone in particular. But on discussion threads, there are so many people who want the team to tank, so many people insulting each other, so many people who seem to think that this organization is worse than the Browns and the Washington team. Why do I want to read that?

For me, football isn't supposed to be a source of anger and bitterness. Life is short. There are enough awful things in the world. I'm not looking for football and this community of fans to add to the awfulness. So, I dunno.
All of it, this shit is easy.

I think that because so many Giants fans are Yankee fans, expectations are somewhat skewed. The Yankees' sustained success is not normal in American sports. The Giants' up-and-down is much more so.

But Dane, there's been unconscionable shit here all the time. Before the team really stank to high heaven, guys would be snarky, demeaning, insulting, all kinds of puerile or worse behavior, and sometimes administered by some of our better posters, in terms of football acumen.

It's the internet, the anonymity, the ego and testosterone mingled with games of one upsmanship on many sides.

I seriously don't think that's changed all that much during the maybe 15 years I've been reading and actively posting here.

You really think it's gotten worse? I don't see it so much.

It feels worse to me. More name-calling and anger on threads.

Game threads were always very negative, people wanting players cut and coaches fired every time the other team made a play. It's the discussion threads that seem worse to me.

Great Dane 100%

. This is not directed to any particular poster, but I ve often found it extremely annoying when Fans come to an NFL forum as Giants fans, to share that they really arenít interested enough to watch the Giants or the NFL anymore.

FINE, donít watch, there s no law or consequences for not watching.

But why do you bring that negativity to a site where guys like Dane and myself, who have always understood it s just a hobby, something we enjoy come to read about the team.

Seems weird, you donít really care anymore, but take time to come to the Internet, to a site, dedicated to the thing you donít care about

Weird.
I watch every game and will continue to
PatersonPlank : 11/9/2019 3:42 pm : link
IMO, if you stop watching just because your team isn't winning you really aren't a fan. If you can only root for winners that root for the Patriots, and when they suck (which they eventually will) then go root for whoever is on top then.

IDK. No one likes their team losing, but I actually think this has been an interesting season despite the finishes.

I know there's a segment of the fanbase that feels we should be angry all the time, as that somehow motivates Mara.

As a Giants/Mets/Islanders/Knicks fan, I've rooted for a lot of bad teams and still managed to have fun.

As for BBI, this site has always been nasty as shit. I have 10-year account and was lurking at least five years before that.

Eric decides what this community will be, and so, you just have to have fun with the twats.

now I have Sunday ticket......paying, to watch garbage. until the regime changes, I'd be better off burning the 400 bucks from the ticket, and driving to the dump every Sunday, spend four hours watching the free shit show. worst coach, general manager in the league.......and, no chance these two will ever improve, yes, the giants hired a 17 and 42 leader. please ownership, get to the sucking point where the franchise is endangered to the point you clean house. scouting flat out sucks, a penchant for drafting slow, ill equipped, dumb players who follow their loser coach's lead. Thereís no benefit from a win. A loss pushes us closer to a total housecleaning at the coaching and front office levels and improves our draft position. I am also actively rooting for teams like the Bengals and Dolphins to win games.

You can call me whatever names you want but I insist there is literally No Upside to the Giants winning any game the rest of the year.

I've been a Giants fan since 1961 and never missed a game in all that time except for 2 that were recorded and I watched them as if live. Although I will watch, the games are a family affair in my house, my enthusiasm has dimmed. In addition to the Giants sucking, it may have something to do with age also.
As some have mentioned, a loss was a downer for a week, now its maybe 30 minutes. And even though I always root for a win while the game is on, after a loss I rationalize that its good in the long run Ö draft position, etc.

As far as BBI, I lost track of when I first joined, but it was several years before the institution of user registration. And yes, it has always been nasty, but there were always some immensely interesting and entertaining threads, but those are gone. In light of the present political nightmare, that's probably a good thing, but its still something missing. Never understood the reason for the nastiness of some posters, but it is in fact a function of the internet.

I used to be on BBI for hours every day with multiple posts daily, even in the off season. Now I rarely visit and almost never post Ö. Giants sucking, BBI nastiness and blandness (its not easy to achieve both), age? Probably all the above, but the Giants are a tradition in our family and I will watch every game.

I'd watch if they were like the Warriors before they became good: shitty, but at least exciting. But the Giants are just excruciating.
I watched the 1990 Super Bowl a week ago.
SB 42 and 46 and ? : 11/9/2019 9:04 pm : link
The game the NFL ranked as the 5th greatest of all time.

What a difference from today. No flag on every other play, with the officials often huddling first. No replay on every third play with more standing around by the players. The teams ran a play, went back into the huddle and ran the next play within thirty seconds. There was a flow.

No super slow motion replays of a "catch" by a receiver to see if the ball had begun to move in his hands before his knee touched down. Pass interference was the weakest part of the game then and it's still the weakest part, except that it stops the game while they review it now.

Why replay. The bad calls against you equaled out the bad calls in favor.

"Taunting" penalties? Two teams can slug it out for fifty five minutes on the clock only to have the game decided on whether one play "taunted" the other. Roughing the quarterback called if a DE gives the QB a light two handed shove in the back after the ball is gone?

But the worst part is the hardest to fix. Much less hard hitting, and penalties called on hits that would have been celebrated in 1990.

Not much you can do about that except maybe if someone came up with better protective gear then basically the same stuff you've been using for fifty years.
I like the players but

I have been to, watched, or listened to every game since 1966. I have seen MANY awful teams but what is happening currently, is as bad or worse the I have seen in all my years. We'll be picking in the top 10 again which is what, five of the last six years? With this management team and coaching staff, I don't see any light at the end of the tunnel. The team is a disgrace but, I'll continue to watch them eat my heart out.
Except for my time in Vietnam I watched every single Giants game that

I now have some cooking project(s) on the back burner every Sunday (or gametime); as the game deteriorates into a puddle of slime I devote more and more time to the kitchen, with the set still on and listening.

Oh I start with having the project(s) loosely set up, devoting commercials only to the kitchen. Gradually that devolves into full time cooking with listening to the game only since the kitchen space is open to the living room. If I hear something good happening, I step back into the LR to watch.

Later today, it will be 2 dishes: French onion soup and prepping a large dish of eggplant parmesan. The assembly of the eggplant parma has to wait for the consumption of the Pompano Morrocan style later this evening that currently occupies the large baking dish. The prep work (slicing eggplants, frying eggplant slices, grating cheese, making tomato sauce) can commence anytime.

Onion soup requires a shitload of onions to be thinly sliced and then caramelized and reduced in volume in a large pot. Over a small flame, it doesn't require too much attention while it caramelizes, but only the rather infrequent stirring and scraping of the bottom of the pot.
I still watch every game
Mike from Ohio : 11/10/2019 7:32 am : link
But many times on delay so that I can reduce the 3.5 hour commitment. I used to text though the games with friends about what was happening, but that doesnít happen anymore because there is nothing positive to say.

Each week I hope to see improvement out of the young players so that there is some hope going into next year. This team just doesnít have that. Barkley is Barkley, Jones makes some ďwowĒ plays but seems to be required by law to turn it over 3 times every game. Overall, the team is poorly built and poorly coached so they are frustrating to watch. But I will watch anyway and hope for something to miraculously improve.

One poster above said something about the losing not being tolerated for long. That is the worst part of this for me. This organization does accept and tolerate losing. The focus is on people, not performance. They evaluate Dave and Pat and decide if they are the right fit. They donít look at wins and losses and ask if they are the best people for the job. That is more frustrating than the performances on the field.

But I will watch this crap show they roll out there today hoping for no particular reason that there are signs of life.
