If this is common knowledge, my apologies, but I did not know this.

Too funny.

Side-by-side comparison: Zero Hour! (1957) Vs Airplane! (1980) - ( New Window )
This happens way more than everyone thinks

Check out "The Shop Around the Corner" from 1940 starring James Stewart. It is exactly what "You've Got Mail" was copied from. In fact they don't even hide it, Meg Ryans little bookshop is actually named "The Shop Around the Corner" in the movie You've Got Mail.

I was watching The Shop Around the Corner on TMC one night, and I was sitting there thinking I've seen this movie before so I looked it up.

I guess after a while people die/forget, and they just get redone.
I knew that one!

Never knew that. Pretty much scene for scene or in some cases word for word.

Actually makes it seem funnier now seeing what happened in the original.

we flew Leslie Nielsen out of Charleston WV. Flight attendant was awesome and told him we were huge fans. As he deplaned he stopped up front and said “Just want to tell you both good luck… we’re all counting on you “

Joey: I think you're the greatest, but my dad says you don't work hard enough on defense. And he says that lots of times, you don't even run down court. And that you don't really try, except during the playoffs.
Murdock: The hell I don't! Listen, kid. I've been hearing that crap ever since I was at UCLA. I'm out there busting my buns every night! Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes.

I remember watching The Big Sleep in a college film class and halfway through the film it hit me- this is The Big Lebowski!

Turns out the Coen brothers acknowledged the connection, citing the Bogart classic as their inspiration.

Same movie! Wonder how the folks who did Zero Hour felt after Airplane! Made a fortune. Lesson to be learned: In the words of Nigel Tufnel, there’s a fine line between clever and stupid.
NFL Hall of Famer Crazy Legs Hirsch started in Zero Hour

As for You've Got Mail, that definitely isn't a rip-off. Shop Around the Corner adapted a play.

YGM was a remake and modernization of the original play, which got credit.

I didn't know about the Airplane/Zero Hour connection, but it seems like it's recognized as a parody.
