The one thing I got most wrong about Gettleman and Shurmur

Giantimistic : 11/10/2019 6:18 pm
I didn’t know how they would be and I did think we were getting a much better play caller than we have. I had hope that things would be better; however I was certain our oline would be fixed. Between Gettleman’s history of finding oline and Shurmur actually having been one, I thought this would be fixed. I was excited when Gettleman said it was a priority. How are they so bad?

How is the coaching this bad? This is the biggest area of failure in my opinion.

As much as I would want Belicheck, I would equally want his oline coach.

The whole org needs a reboot

the scouting was never fixed - so why would the players selected get any better?
Right about the scouting
Giants86 : 11/10/2019 6:23 pm : link
They are terrible and outside of no brainer picks. Odell. Saquon. Jones to an extent they aren’t very good
I agree about OL

My big problem with DG was I thought he would build a good OL and try winning games with Bark running the ball. Kinda 1980s football

So I thought we would be a ten win team that was a tough out but never challenged for a championship

Boy, was I wrong

I don't think it's this clear. Other than the Lauletta pick, the 2 drafts DG has put together seem to be pretty good, including Hernandez at G, and Connely at LB, 2 positions the Giants have had many problems with in the past. His FA decisions have not been good, but to say the scouting is "not fixed" seems like a significant over reaction.

Really? Has BJ Hill done much? What about Lorenzo Carter? They just seem like JAG's at best. No better than what we've seen over the past 10 years or so.

I have no particular interest in defending Gettleman but Dexter Lawrence and Darius Slayton have been pretty good, Ryan Connelly looked excellent before the knee injury and Ballantine is overperforming his draft slot. Those aren't no-brainer picks.
Ugh

I was one of those folks who didn’t expect much this season. I will tell you I expected the team to be more competitive than this. No doubt that injuries have played a role when there is little depth. I was hoping we would win 5 to 7 games maybe even get to 500 so we wouldn’t have to overpay in the free-agent market. We have a lot of money they can disappear quickly when you overpay. One of the things that does not get enough press is when you are a bad team a lot of free agents will not consider you unless you add a years or several million dollars. I believe we can do a decent job drafting but I am worried about how long that actually takes when you have so many holes. We clearly need two starters on the offense of line at least
We may end up needing another receiver. All of us know we need help on the edge we need help it inside linebacker and we need at least one safety. And at this rate we’re going to need a new place kicker.

Our playcalling is pretty bad but the limitation of talent each Sunday makes it harder. Game management is another issue. Our defense is roadkill
problem is less gettleman than it is shurmur

. other than zeitler and hernandez, the giants were playing backups today.

sure, you can blame gettleman for signing remmers halapio and solder in the first place (and of those, halapio is the worst), but injuries happen. this team barely has any depth at any position, OL is no exception
The thing I got most wrong about DG and PS is

I assumed it would get better, even somewhat...
scouting?
thrunthrublue : 11/10/2019 9:37 pm : link
I bet, within the secret closed doors war room of the giants scouting braintrust, its a chimp, dartboard and some player print outs.....to the mara family's delight.
They took over a team

With 0 startling caliber OL under contract. Tasked with finding the next franchise qb. No cap space. Vastly overpaid players like snacks, ov, jenkins and unfortunately eli. The best player (beckham) a head case with a contract hanging over his n the franchise heads, no fs, no lbs and they decided to change defensed. Its literally impossible to fix that kinda mess that quickly. Only so much $ and so many picks available.

Theres no quick fix out of this hole. Theyre gonna have to have a draft and free agency perfection run like on 05 when they added pierce, plax, mckenzie, tuck, webster and brandon to get this franchise back to the pt where they can compete w playoff caliber teams. Until that mass talent Influx occurs This team is at least two yrs aways and thats assuming jones is good which is at best a coin flip. Think it cant get worse? It can.
There is no patience on this board or in this fanbase

This team needs more work. We had a terrible roster and limited cap space. It was always going to be year 3 before we had a chance to be competitive.

The biggest problem facing DG right now is it looks like he got the head coach wrong. That's really bad because we should have a much more solid talent base following the Draft and free agency going into 2020. I don't trust shurmur to get the positive momentum to turn the corner no matter what he's given to work with on game day. He's a bad head coach.
And yet with 'limited cap space'

They made it worse with the Solder contract, the beckham contract, and other mistakes.

That's bad work.
