I've asked before but one more time - why no QB coach?

jcn56 : 11/10/2019 10:22 pm
rookie QB with some obvious flaws and a lot to process - why isn't there a coach on staff dedicated solely to helping further his development?

I get that Shurmur is supposed to be a QB whisperer, but he's got enough shit on his plate.

Was there ever an official explanation as to why they decided to bypass this position, unlike most NFL teams?
He’s got Shula, Shurmur, Eli and Tanney

to assist him. What more would a QB Coach do?
you won't get a better answer than simms11 gave you

...there's plenty of coaching, mentoring and whatever else you'd like available for Jones with the people on hand to develop him.

Shurmur's the HC and Shula's the OC. Other teams have them and still have a QB coach on the staff.

Eli and Tanney are both players, not coaches.
Realistically, Tanney is a player-coach,

since there's zero intention of him ever getting into a game. Eli is a player-coach at this point, since he's no longer in "It's my job to prepare to win the game, not mentor the backup" mode.

Plus Shula and Shurmur.

So you feel that if Jones had a need to confide in someone for some help, he'd do so with a peer like Tanney or Eli the same as he would a coach dedicated to his own personal development?

27 teams in the NFL have a QB coach. One that doesn't is NE, figuring that Brady can get by with McDaniels.
dude, haven't you heard? shurmur is a QB whisperer.
japanhead : 11/10/2019 10:47 pm : link
we don't need a QB coach when we have the hand of shurmur guiding him!
We just had a ROOKIE QB

Throw for 300y and 4td? QB coach is the least of our problems

And fumbled the ball again resulting in points for the opposing team. Jones is definitely not high on the list of why the Giants are losing - but if he's the most important guy on the field, and his development is crucial, then why the hell don't they have a guy on staff responsible for it?
because
Steve in Greenwich : 11/10/2019 11:05 pm : link
our head coach felt it was such an important job that he couldnt trust the QB coach position to anyone else but himself; so rather than perform as the head coach like his title entails he is more worried about inflating QB completion percentages so he can keep his label as a QB whisperer since he knows it would take back to back undefeated seasons to be able to remove his other label as a loser Head Coach.
I'll add another question
Go Terps : 11/10/2019 11:09 pm : link
Why no analytics experts helping with game management decisions? We have a head coach who makes completely inconsistent mistakes week to week because no clear methodology exists... Why haven't we employed people to help him?

One of many of Gettleman's failings.
I'm not sure...

what a QB coach is going to do.

Jones has very dependable footwork and seems very comfortable in the pocket. Solid fundamentals most of the time. And he's certainly not seeing ghosts.

Yes, he's struggling with ball protection and likely waiting too long. But those are issues that simply require Shurmur's coaching, and just cleaning up some route issues in practice.

We have considerably larger problems on the offensive side with coaching - like the OL coach, game planning, mid-game adjustments, and game management.

To be clear, I don't necessarily agree with the Giants' plan, but that's what I think the plan is. A QB coach wouldn't be a personal coach for DJ; he'd be coaching all three QBs on the roster. So I don't that aspect of it is really a thing.
