...of Lawrence Taylor, I just don't see how the Giants can afford NOT to trade down and gather additional picks.
For certain, we need at bare minimum 5 brand new productive starters at:
FS
Edge
ILB
OT
C
However, I think there are more than just a few BBIers who believe the Giants actually need two (not one) new starters at either Edge, ILB and/or OT. So, that means up to 8 brand new productive starters not on the current roster.
Which says nothing about whether or not the Giants also need another receiver and/or a true 2-way TE.
So, from the perspective of sitting at the bottom of the barrel, and the 2020 NFL Draft 165 days away (but who's counting?), it sure looks like the Giants book move is to trade down.
Maybe several times.
The same hysterics as when the great Tim Lewis was coaching are on display. Tuck Osi and Strahan all sucked right? Nothing changes until this staff is shit canned. LT at his peak couldn’t save Betcher
Markus Golden? While Gettleman squanders high draft picks for someone like Williams w/the hope of signing him,Golden is providing the only pass rush we have. He needs to be THE priority to sign in the off-season!
It's ironic how we were all so excited after that win and the win the next week.

Are there 1 or 2 big time free agents that can be difference makers at positions of need on defense?

L Williams was our best pass rusher yesterday.
Golden's been a great signing and for the right price I'd retain him, but Williams destroyed their OL all night.
Chase Young is only the 3rd human who can lift Mojnir!
Hammer of the Gods!
Considering we don't have our own 3rd rounder, it'd be nice to get something like:
2020 1st
2020 2nd
2020 4th
2021 1st
If you look at the Eagles trade up for Wentz, aside from the 1st round swap that year, the Browns got a 3rd and 5th that year, a 1st in 2017, and a 2nd in 2018. That should be the type of deal that happens if a team jumps up 10 slots or so.
I do not like trading down especially if a true difference maker was available. If they are at #3 or #4 and could trade to #6 while getting an additional #1 and or 2 #2s, it might be worth it. But who has those picks to trade while needing a QB?
At the least they need:
LT/RT
C
ER
ILB
FS
Next is ILBs. Two of them if possible. We have no idea what Ryan Connelly is going to do. Players with ACLs usually take two years to fully come back.
If we can get another edge player sure but we have two players that NEED to pan out. Lorenzo Carter and Oshane Ximines.
We don't know about safety because Julian Love needs to FREAKING PLAY!!!!

+1. It’s hard to discern who is worth keeping and who isn’t.

'Best' case would be losing to the Dolphins and jumping them in draft order since they have multiple extra picks this year.
This team is so far away from a personnel perspective with regards to competing for a playoff berth. They need so many more players it’s depressing to list: OT(2), OC, TE, WR1, WR2, EDGE, multiple LB’s, FS, Long Snapper, a threat at PR, maybe a better Punter, and better depth. Mara may as well hang a “HELP WANTED” sign on the front door.
This is a name we need to see more of on this board. If we pick 3rd, we probably miss out on Young, Thomas would help this team every bit as much.
Young could bust, or get hurt. We're also not one player away from being competitive. We have a million holes, and no third round pick of our own because of the Williams trade. The projected comp pick for Landon Collins won't be until the end of the third round.
But it's a moot discussion. The Giants are institutionally opposed to trading down, in any round. Gettleman has never done so, and neither did Reese. The last time we traded down was when Accorsi did so for Kiwi.
Just lose baby!

is the team's ability to evaluate and grade out offensive linemen has become trash even as those in the scouting field tell us about 'value'.
Gettleman needs to bring in an offensive line expert who’s only job is to conduct quality control on pro and NCAA Linemen scouting. There’s clearly an organizational problem here and it is vital to solve it. They need to spend the money and get the expertise to fix this.
I've been saying this for years. We need to do a much better job of scouting Oline. It's been years since we've had a decent lineman drafted. Snee was probably the last one IMO.
I think there are 5 1st rd QBs available...
Until most find out he is a Dematha product and you come to your senses. 2 years out of HS. talent or not dampen your enthusiasm.
Roster has big holes on the OL, WR, and throughout the back seven on defense. I'm talking about building a winner, not just an average football team. No more Solders and Ogltrees, bite the suck bullet and ride it out.

Really? Williams 1T 2A; Golden2T 2A 1 Sack 2 TFL
This Packers lite wco system just kills OL effectiveness .
That's over two coaches and two GMs.
Implement an entirely different approach on O and use top free agents at center and right tackle.
Not saying that gets you a winning season but it's still a two year project due to grabbing the w
Qb last year.
On D:
In addition to the list in this thread i'd say we really need 2 free safeties;
the speed burner ball hawk, and the great slot/s/FS (plus 2 top ilbs, one thats safety like but bigger, one great olb type, the other edge, keep golden and draft a true fatty 2 gap nose tackle to free up Dex and Williams inside ).
That's the whole draft.
Maybe the zone blocking heavy bully TE to get the new system going.
Oh, and an instant burst to the edge RB. For the same reason as the TE.
