How does Jones stats compare to top QBs rookie seasons ?

Archer : 11/11/2019 11:39 am
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

In order to create a comparison, I took Daniel Jones stats for (8) games and prorated them over a full season.
This is not an accurate comparison as it relies upon projecting his stats and anticipating that will be similar in a full season. It is likely that his actual stats will likely differ.

Jones stats prorated over 16 games will be as follows;

63% completion rate, 3,968 passing yards, 416 yards rushing, 4,384 total yards, 30 TDs, 4 RTDs, 34 TTds, 16 INTs, 64 sacks, 88 rating, and 18 lost fumbles.

The Good;
How does Daniel Jones compare to some of the young star QBs?
Daniel Jones would have more TDs, Yards, Total Yards than Baker Mayfield in his record breaking season, 3,725 Passing Yards, 3,856 Total Yards, 27 TDs, 14 INTs, 25 Sacks, 93.7 Rating.
Daniel Jones prorated stats compare favorably with Zak Prescot (3,667 PYS 23 TDs, 4 INTs, but he was Sacked only 25 times) , Russell Wilson (3,118 PYs, 489 RY, 3,607 TYs, 26 TDs, 10 INTs, 33 Sacks) , Carson Wentz ( 3,782 PY, 150 RY, 3,932 TY, 16 TDs, 14 INT, 33 Sacks, 79.3 Rating) and Deshaun Watson ( prorated Rookie Year ( 3,883 PY, 608 YR, 4,492 YYs, 43 TDs, 61% CR, 18 Int, Sacks 40, (2) lost Fumbles.

The Bad and the Ugly;
Jones will have fumbled 18 times that is significantly worse than any of the good rookie QBs.
While this can partially be better explained when you look at the number of times he would be sacked (64) times, which is only (8) sacks behind David Carr’s rookie season of (76). David Carr by reference had (15) INTs and (21) fumbles (7 lost). It is still a point of emphasis. Daniel Jones must protect the ball better.
Also, while the OL is awful some of the sacks can be attributed to Jones. He does hold the ball too long and occasionally does not recognize or feel pressure.

Other things to consider when evaluating Daniel Jones performance;
Jones leads the league with tight window competitions, Jones leads the league in tight window TDs, Jones completion rate when throwing in a clean pocket is 71%, Jones has been sacked or hit more than any other QB, Jones plays behind a porous OL, the Giants receivers average only 2 yards of separation, and most of his fumbles have come by Jones trying to make a play, either holding the ball to long in the pocket or attempting to get a first down rushing the ball.

Jones has had three games where his QB rating was over 112. In those three games Jones accounted for an amazing
(12) TDs.

There is a lot to like about the Giants Rookie.

2 important things to watch for in rookie QBs

Peak games: glimpses of their ceiling. Jones gets an A/A+ here with 3 games with 3 games (out of 8) with 4 total TDs and 325+ yards.

Learning from mistakes: D's are going to attack his weaknesses, so does he keep making the same errors again and again, or is he learning and adjusting to the Ds he's seeing. The fumbles are mildly concerning here, though I think he'll need an offseason of reps to work on this and I'm not too concerned long term. In terms of making reads though, the INTs look good (2 in the last 4 games), but I think you have to really watch tape and All-22 to make a good determination here.
I find it

pretty incredible as a rookie on this team he has more TDs than INTs. His decision making is very good, and although we are ringing our hands around the fumbles, his INTs have been relatively in check albeit a few DB's drop one or two over this season.

wonder if he has the Dave Kreig/ Phil Simms smaller hands issue regarding fumbling
Jones Hands

Jones hands are 9 3/4"

The preferred size is 9 1/2 " or larger.
Weapons

what’s most impressive to me is the production w/o having top flight weapons. Engram hasn’t shown anything outside of the Tampa game. Saquon is a shell of himself. And his best option has been a rookie 5th round pick!

Add to that the fact that he’s playing behind a terrible line, and I have hope for DJ. Now if we could only fix the other issues, we might have a team that plays meaningful games in Dec and Jan at some point.
When the Giants bring in olinemen who can protect him better

Daniel Jones will become a top tier qb. By the way, yesterday was not a total loss, the cowturds lost!

No matter the era if you have a control the line of scrimmage on offense and defense your chances of winning increase.
