I researching a 4/3 vs. 3/4 defense I found an interesting commentary that made me think;
"In a 4-3 defense, pressure is mainly created from the front four. One tackle occupies two blockers, and the rest of the line get one-on-one match-ups. Linebackers do their fair share of blitzing, but their main responsibility is stopping the run and guarding against the pass."
"In a 3-4 defense, the pressure is mainly created from the backers. The job of the defensive line is to occupy gaps, and occupy multiple offensive linemen. The outside linebackers in a 3-4 have a much greater pass rushing responsibility, and the fact that there are two middle linebackers allows for a lot of creative blitzes and coverages." |
Why do the Giants employ a base 3/4?
Based upon the players they have it seems they are better suited to a 4/3. I know that the Giants use a 4/3, but it is occasionally. The 4/3 is less exotic but it allows the DL to attack and to play more physical.
The Giants do not have (4) play making linebackers. And the linebackers don't seem to be able to stop the run.
In looking at advanced matrix it appears that the 4/3 is generally better against the rush, while the 3/4 is marginally better against pass.
I would like to see a base DL with
Lawrence- Tomlinson - Hill - Williams liemen.
Golden - Mayo / Ogeltree - Carter as linebackers.
The Giants did well against the Jets anemic running attach but against good running teams they look lost.

I mentioned this on another thread about the defensive front, but the reality is, switching to a 4-3 would more than likely result in MORE of our mediocre LBs on the field, not less. Chances are, the DE positions would be occupied at least in part by our current OLBs, and then we'd still put 3 traditional LBs out there in the base defense.
Our personnel is at least nominally more suited to a 3-4 right now, but we lack the talent to make it go. We also lack the talent to make the 4-3 work, and it would probably be even worse right now.
We have at least 3 decent to better big DTs.
They can all (3)be out there at the same time. Be that a 4/3 with Dex on one end and Golden the other:
Dex,Williams,Tomlinson,Golden
(Carter set back)
Or a 5 look ""
Carter,Dex,Thomas, Williams,Golden
With 6 dbs
But to out only 2 true DL out there with these current lbs...i mean, it sucked less badly than it could have, which is amazing. But...ask the cowboys RB how he likes the 2-4-5...
I'd re-sign Golden than pay big money to Barrett.
for YEARS. back then we had the DE's to run 4-3 no problem. now we don't.
we've never had a great linebacker corp will to sam.
That was an almost every day occurrence here. Now, folks want to switch back. Too much.
I thought switching to a 3-4 while simultaneously trying to 'fix the offense' was a huge mistake. I liked some of the DG picks, but his resource management has been horrible.
If the Giants do resign him then you would want him to be in the best possible position to succeed
I would draft Young or Espanza they are 4 / 3 ends
Cmon' man.

What are you basing your hypothesis that LW is best suited as a 4-3 DE? Because you want him to be?
He fits the archetype of a 3-4 DE perfectly.
