Question: What's the Over/Under on How Many Years

clatterbuck : 11/11/2019 2:42 pm
before this gets turned around? I'm in my 70s, been a fan for more than 60 years. I'd like to experience a few more years of competitive, winning, playoff Giants football with my family before heading off to the man-cave-in-the-sky and I don't think I can afford another "15 years of lousy football." Is there hope?
maybe we can fly a small drone

that says 7 1/2 years of lousy football
No

quit sports and enjoy life elsewhere.
You may want to look at other teams

I think at minimum you have 2 more years for us to be competitive and if you have a coaching change again you never know what you are going to get. Are they going to tear it down once again.

The main issue with the team is talent. We are littered with either rookies or backup type players right now. Its going to take nearly a perfect FA period and draft to get us back on track.

I would take over 3 years at this point. When we were this bad last time we drafted Eli, but there was a lot of talent on that team and we turned it around. We dont have that right now, we have a lot of young question marks with potential. Guys like Lorenzo carter who I thought would have an impact this year, just hasnt shown enough to be more than a role player. Maybe teh light goes on year 3. I do think we have the QB but even that is a question. Barkley has not elevated his game. OL is still bad. The D is a complete disaster, maybe Lawrence is the building block.
The young guys make fun of posts like this but

I and many in our age group think the same way. I've been through all the bad years with this team and every time you hope you never see years of losing football with no hope. Hang in their clatterbuck it won't be that long I'm sure of it. We're done this year but I still hope for next. Maybe not a Super Bowl but this cycle will end soon.
I truly believe this team has a decent foundation.....

and is a few key starters away from being fairly good. I also believe a better coaching staff could turn this thing right around.

There's no looking at other teams. I'm a Giants lifer, for all that entails.

I tend toward optimism but the past two weeks have been very discouraging. Losing to the dog-ass Jets brought back the trauma of the Yale Bowl, 1969. But thanks for the encouraging words!
I'd say it will atke about 5 years...
BlueVinnie : 11/11/2019 4:23 pm : link
and that's assuming both Shurmur and Gettleman get the axe after the 2020 season. I don't think we'll be competitive in 2020 so the axe needs to fall.
At that point Mara needs to hire a GM who can evaluate talent. Forget the nonsense about a guy who knows "the Giant way" or has ties to the team - hire the best man for the job and then stay the hell out of that GM's way. Let the GM hire a coach he can work with and hopefully they can get us back to respectability (or better) within 3 years.
Not quite as old as clatterbuck, but have the same feeling
Red Dog : 11/11/2019 4:31 pm : link
about this lousy team.

If things go mostly right, Shurmur and company are replaced by competent coaches for next season, and good drafting continues, I think they might be competitive in two or three years.

But if things go wrong, like keeping Shurmur and company, or if they fail to develop Daniel Jones, or if they can't find the right players to fix this absolutely abysmal defense, it could be another decade or more.
Most of us

would have signed up for two Superbowls in 15 years with Eli, when he was drafted. Now we have to pay the price and reboot it.
We have the curse of the Coughlin firing so

~85 years.
Fix the offensive line
joeinpa : 11/11/2019 5:40 pm : link
And there will be a domino effect on improvement just as a poor offensive line for years has filtered through the entire team.

They could fix the line as soon as next season. Lot of times you don’t realize there are pieces already in place for success until a team turns it around
your main hope

is that DG retires soon, so that a competent GM can be hired. Giants tend to hold on to GMs a long time.

Best case scenario: a change of coaching staff this year lights a fire under the existing young uns, and we kill draft and FA for a couple years. We'll be competitive into the playoffs in 2-3 yrs.

Realistic good scenario: a change of coaching staff gets an extra couple wins out of this group, with an uptick in drafting/FA success. Gets us competitive for a playoff berth (not really that tough in this drek of a division). probably not much doing in the playoffs. a couple more good years could make us competitive in the playoffs. So, 2-3 yrs for mediocrity, 4-5 yrs to be good.

Realistic bad scenario: we get an OK coach, and do OK in FA/draft. we hover around or below .500 for the foreseeable future.

Nightmares set in: DG continues to bungle, won't retire, makes another bad coaching choice. 4-6 years go by, with occasional 4-6 win seasons, leading us to continue hoping, which is never realized. 6-8 years, they finally fire DG, and we start the rebuild again, meaning 3-5 years add'l before any real hope sets in.

I'm not a fan of DG, or the Maras, so you may want to bring your cell phone with you in the coffin so you can keep tabs on the rebuild.
I actually think we are in the midst of a turnaround now
PatersonPlank : 11/11/2019 6:42 pm : link
You can never see it when you're in it. We are playing a lot of young, promising guys who are high draft picks. We also have a few "Veterans", like Peppers and Williams, who are still pretty young and will be here a while. We're also very competitive on offense and getting better on D.

I think next year we get to .500

Great post. Feel exactly the same was about DG. I wish the Giants would wish him the best of health and buy him a nice place in a senior community. There are plenty of nice ones down here in Florida(just in case Dave reads this board).
If we were 2-7 like the Dolphins..
Sean : 11/11/2019 7:23 pm : link
rebuilding/competing - I’d be fine with it. Flores is building a program. I don’t know what this is, but it sucks.
If the team is run like the dolphins or lions now
giantsFC : 11/11/2019 7:29 pm : link
Then 25 years? 50? 100?

If they did their inner Giants mojo, I’d say 2-3 years.
Still way too many holes to expect them all filled this spring
The_Boss : 11/11/2019 8:56 pm : link
Next year likely is another sub .500 year. Maybe 2021 we get to .500?? My best guess is we finally are above water in 2022.
BUT.....
Who is in charge with turning this around? Is it that cocksucker DG? Who coaches the players? Shurm? If so all bets are off

To paraphrase Carl Banks this team is a few starters away from being...a few starters away!

If we had smart people in charge with a clear vision..
Sean : 11/11/2019 9:27 pm : link
It wouldn’t be that long.
I honestly don't know
rocco8112 : 11/12/2019 7:56 am : link
The team will soon be on coach three and I will believe the o line and defense improves when I see it.
