Minkah Fitzpatrick

jacob12 : 11/11/2019 3:24 pm
Minkah Fitzpatrick has won 2 games for the Steelers.
He has transformed their defense.

Pittsburgh's defense has gone from allowing 31 points and 445 yards per game before acquiring him to giving up 17 points and 300 yards per game.

The Steelers were (27) in takeaways before the Fitzpatrick trade, after Minkah joined the team, they are second in takeaways.

The Dolphins are inept.
I was skeptical

At the trade, since it was for a #1 and Pitt was trending towards a top 10 or top 5 pick.

But man... he is definitely worth a #1. A true ball hawking safety!
More likely the Steelers

know how to have safeties play. But it truly is an amazing transformation.
I wouldn't say they are inept.

They're going to suck for a few years and at the time the steelers had just lost their QB for the season. Mason Rudolph has played a lot better for them as of late.

Have so much respect for this trade and what they have done this season.

If Pat Shurmur and Gettleman lost the starting QB you would never head the end of it and they would fold up shop.
It just goes to show you how important a good coaching staff is

They lost their starting QB and this team has not quit. They even had to start their 3rd QB in a game due to the concussion for Rudolph and they still won.
This was a great pickup by the Steelers and I like Mike Tomlin...

But it also points out how sometimes all it takes is 1 or 2 really good players to make an ordinary defense a great one ... The Jets played great because Adams willed them to win ... look at Kuechly on the Panthers, Smith and Lawrence on the Cowboys ... plus a number of other teams.
Imagine if we had Adams paired with Peppers instead of Bethea.
He’s a beast
Nine-Tails : 11/11/2019 4:09 pm : link
Maybe he was the gold jacket player from last years draft, lol
It bums me out that we have the same orginizational structure
Zeke's Alibi : 11/11/2019 4:12 pm : link
as the Steelers, but they consistently put together the most talented 53 in the league. I don't even know what to make of Tomlin as a coach because he is consistenly given tremendous rosters to work with. Imagine what Eli's career would look like there probably very similar to Big Ben's, maybe better without all the injuries.
He hasn’t won 2 games

They are stacked on all levels of defense. Haden is healthy. The rookie LB is a monster. Pass rush is multi dimensional.

Fitz has been very good. Yesterday the refs gave them a gift on his TD but that play was made by the pass rush that hit the QB The ball bounced to Fitz with nobody near him.

His INT yesterday was off a diving tipped play by Haden. Haden made the play.

Pick vs Colts was a floater over the middle from a backup QB. Terrible throw.

He’s had some splash plays but several of them were tipped plays in his hands.

Steeler defense Is a force. I think they’re the most talented defense in the NFL right now. Watt dominates. Dupree is playing better. Fastest defense to the ball right now.
Good trade for both teams

As it turned out.

Ben lost after two games
Bell not resigned
Conner injured
Brown traded

If those things all happened to the Giants and they were say 2-6 or 3-7 instead of having the 5-4 record Pittsburgh has now, the lament would be that the coach can't be asked to do any better because they don't have the talent.

Pittsburgh may not make the playoffs this season (current standings have them in), but this may probably go down as one of their prouder seasons if they can persevere through all of that and STILL get in or being playing a meaningful game in Week 17.

But it does show you the value of not only coaching, but an entire staff. Tomlin and his staff didn't pack it up when Ben was KO'd for the season. Everyone bought in and it has worked.

Fitzpatrick...

just has a sense you can't teach - he's always around the ball whether he touches it first or it's touched by someone else first. It's uncanny. And then he has the ability to make points off turnovers.

All great safeties have this gift - Reed, Lott, Polamalu, Thomas, Dawkins, etc.

It was a brilliant trade by Colbert and Steelers Central.

Hell, you can argue that Fitz is now in the running for DPoTY.

I wanted him

To replace Bethea, but we couldn’t trade our possible top 5 pick for him. I knew they wouldn’t take a second round pick.

Always been a believer of big of an impact a stud FS can have an your defense. As bad as this defense is, adding a stud FS and ILB would make a huge difference
Look.. here is the reality guys...
EricJ : 11/11/2019 5:41 pm : link
if we made the trade, first this place would have a melt down over how much we gave up. I dont know how much he makes but that would likely be a popular thing to have a problem with here too.

Then, when he gets inserted into our horrible defensive scheme and as a result, is not in position to make the plays he is making for Pitt...we would be adding this to the list of reasons why we should fire DG
See? THAT'S a trade that makes sense
Anakim : 11/11/2019 5:43 pm : link
Minkah still has years to go on his contract. HE was worth trading for. Not an impending free agent like Leonard Williams.

Yeah, but we gave up a third, not our future #1-3 overall pick.

I mean, Minkah is great but he can't rush the passer and guard TEs at the same time.

But that's my whole point. Steelers weren't doing well when they traded for Minkah so everyone questioned why they would trade a potential top-10 pick for him. Minkah was worth it. He was a year removed from being a first round pick, he had a fantastic rookie season and he was under team control for the next few years.

Leonard Williams, by contrast is an impending free agent. Absolutely no need to trade for him in a wasted season like this one.
