Shurmur Mara and continuity

blueblood'11 : 11/12/2019 8:35 am
So thought I'd listen to Francesa yesterday for his take on all things Giants, and while I agreed with most of what he had to say, the one thing that stood out to me was his use of the word continuity.

He says Mara will give Shurmur another year because Mara believes in continuity and given Jones is a rookie quarterback he will want to keep that continuity in place.

My thought was what continuity are we talking about here. He hasn't been able to fix Jones' fumbling woes. The offense is predictable. One inside hand off after another to an injured Barkley who probably shouldn't even be on the field as much as he is while totally neglecting a tough minded Wayne Gallman.

A Swiss cheese defense and a propensity for terrible clock management as was once again evident when using his time outs with four and a half minutes left in the game and the Jets deep in their own territory. Who does that?

Not giving help to a second string left tackle and letting him get over run time and time again and nearly getting his quarterback killed. Shoot, there's your continuity. A head coach who can't adjust when the game plan is no longer working.

I can't imagine any thing will change giving this guy anther year. I can't imagine how Mara can see any positive signs in the job this guy has done. It's gotten worse not better.

There are changes needed now

1 fire oline coach
2 fire Bettcher
3 give up play calling
4 use SB in space more if his ankle allows.
The re-build begins when a legitmate head coach and coaching staff...

Continuity in losing. Leave it to the adults!
Losing is acceptable in the Giants organization
Ben in Tampa : 11/12/2019 8:51 am : link
We need to accept it.

This franchise has been a loser for close to a decade. John Mara has no balls and no creativity and would rather take half measures and coddle his employees than build a winning franchise.
I look at Mara
blueblood'11 : 11/12/2019 8:53 am : link
His decision making over the past eight years has put this franchise in such an out of control spiral it may take years to rectify if he continues down this path.

There should be a boycott
Fishmanjim57 : 11/12/2019 9:01 am : link
Giants fans should stay away from Met Life until Shurmur/Gettleman are fired.
The only thing that affects Mara is $$$.
If he starts losing fan money from this form of apathy, maybe he'd get the message.
I know it won't happen though.
This team will suck for another decade before Mara hires another coach like Tom Coughlin!
In the meantime we'll have to watch these experimental coaches.
Shurmur may become the worst coach who ever stood on the sidelines of an NFL team.
Maybe that's what record Mara is trying to achieve.
Amen man
JerryNicklebag : 11/12/2019 9:13 am : link
I'm all for continuity, but you hit the nail on the head. This is only going to be negative continuity.

Shurmur is hurting Jones' development with his complete lack of common football sense.

It's time to go back to the well and this time hire a winner. Go pry Harbaugh away from Michigan. He did very well with the Niners and coming back from the college game he could have some valuable input in the draft.

Trade something for Sean Payton. Hell, if the ride finally comes to an end for Brady in New England, see what it would take to bring Bill home!

It's super frustrating watching Mara and Tisch make bad hires to coach this team. Stop rolling the dice and go get a proven winner!

I'm seriously debating not watching a game next season if Shurmur is here. My old man did it in the '70s when in law school & he didn't regret a second of it.

Watching the Giants should be an option at this point, not a default priority.

If it's a friend/family get together time, fine. But if the game is keeping you from friends, family, or anything worthwhile, then the Giants should drop down in the order of priority.

Some would call this a fair weather view, but I think it's a rational point of view. The Maras of the world depend on fans being foolishly diehard for no real reason.
Mike was resigned to the fate

that Mara will keep him for the whole "continuity" aspect as opposed to the change that the Giants will eventually make after next season when they OFFICIALLY come to the realization that he should be fired and basically wasting a year of everyone's time.

The Hail Mary scenario he threw out was the Giants losing the remainder of their games. Problem is, while the games against Chicago, Green Bay and Philadelphia (twice) are instant losses, Miami and Washington are on the schedule and they can steal at least one of them (I don't think they will win both) and then Gettleman and Shurmur can make their PowerPoint presentation to say that they are making progress even if the win-loss record doesn't show it.

Jones getting the job after 2 games was a job preservation strategy. Shurmur is just trying to do anything he can now to hold on. That's why I'm very curious as to why Barkley (who clearly looks hurt) is continuing to play even though just by looking at him, he has little to no explosion in his legs at all.

We can see this movie playing out...they will spend a truckload of coin to purchase a defense to save themselves and try to squeeze out 8-8 and buy themselves another year by saying (assuming they finish with 4 wins) that they improved the W-L by 100%, how can you fire us?
Wouldn't surprise me at all
fkap : 11/12/2019 9:40 am : link
to see PS back. He's owed a lot of guaranteed money.

Besides, even with his mediocre (being charitable), the team could win a lot more games with anything resembling a defense. It would be easy to rationalize replacing Betcher and some others here and there while keeping PS
This is why I wanted the game so bad on Sunday....

...we knew this loss wasn't going to lead ownership make any changes. Now we have to eat shit for 4 years while we fall further behind.

How can this D and O-line be fixed in one off season anyway.
you know what I don't understand is when did QBs become morons?
Dinger : 11/12/2019 9:45 am : link
They can't learn a new offense? They have to be mollycoddled(to use a phrase I'm SURE is in Gettlemans repetoir). So you keep a shit coach because youre worried about a QBs progression?! Then fuckit get a new QB too. I didn't understand it with Eli and I don't with Jones. Rodgers seems to have done fine with a change. Eli was fine with Macadoo. If he's a good QB and a smart player, which I think you want and have both of in him, then he'll be fine. You have to get a HC who knows wtf he's doing and have him put in a OC and a QB coach who can work with him. Its just ridiculous.
I can't see
Lines of Scrimmage : 11/12/2019 9:52 am : link
how you bring him back at even 5 wins. The players will have no respect for the organization wanting to win.

This coaching staff is also really effecting DG's judgement particularly the defensive side. Betcher was the one very high on Baker who I think still has potential but maybe a better corner was available. All the Arizona guys and I suspect he pushed for Ogletree as well. On offense, Shurmur pushed Halapio and Remmers.

Shurmur has said the OL is the pulse of your team and he is a former Center. In year two, should it not be a good unit? Did he think Hunter was a very good coach?

Hopefully the fire chants are prevalent at home games and then I think Mara will have to act.

Think about what we are saying in that one sentence.

They would be going into year 3 of their "plan" (whatever that is) and you probably couldn't count on one hand the amount of offensive and defensive lineman from this current roster that you would even keep.

That is extremely problematic because if they are not on the team by then, when are you going to get them? You can't buy them all.
Yep this is exactly my fear
Oscar : 11/12/2019 10:10 am : link
Just said as much in another thread. I fully expect Shurmur to return next year unless they lose every game the rest of the way.

It’s obvious to anyone who’s watching that Shurmur is in over his head. He can’t manage a game, he can’t handle the media, he can’t win which is obviously the most important thing, his record is absolutely abysmal.

I’m sure Mara will say everyone needs to get better, blah blah blah, but it will ring hollow. This is the time for decisive action but Mara does not have it in him. We’ll be having a similar conversation about Shurmur this time next year.

Ben McAdoo only got fired because he benched Eli and the whole world freaked out and Mara needed a fall guy. That whole episode had long term ramifications for the franchise. Mara’s main takeaway was that Eli was the key to everything, he fired the old regime, reinstalled Eli as starter and hired a coach/GM combo that told him exactly what he wanted to hear - we can rebuild around this QB.

Burned another season trying to recapture the past, that failed, now we’re going to give Shurmur and Gettleman a freebie because of the quarterback change.

This is where being a fan genuinely sucks. I don’t agree with the direction the organization is going. I don’t have confidence in Mara to make the right decisions. My two options are to take repeated shots to the head and keep watching and hoping they get it right one day or just say fuck ‘em and take some time off. If Shurmur comes back next year the latter option will be very tempting.

Thanks BigBlue...

Also, Sequon and Daniel Jones' rookie contracts are here before you know it. Gentlemen, please I am not saying this out of frustration of the player, but would it be the craziest idea to trade Barkley next year to a team who is a RB away? Only because it looks like we are not going to be able to complete in his rookie contract window and maybe we should use the cap space towards building and hopefully maintaining an improved offensive line and defense.
Francesa nor anyone else

Knows what Mara is going to do with Shurmur at the end of the year.

He fired a coach in the middle of the season last year, his critics insisted that coach would be kept for continuity

My opinion baring a win against maybe Philly, combined with maybe 2 of 3 against Dolphins, Redskins, Bears, I think he’s gone.
What good coach is going to want this job???
Rudy5757 : 11/12/2019 10:19 am : link
The roster is a disaster and you will now have fired 3 coaches in 5 years. Any good coach is going to steer clear of this job since its a 2 year opportunity. I am sure any good coach will have much better opportunities to coach a team that has talent.

So what are we left with? Take a gamble that we could lure a good coach from college or hire a young coordinator from some team?

My choice would be Dan Campbell who I think would bring some toughness to this team and has ties to the orgamization. Some have mentioned Rhule from Baylor but why would he leave there for here? This is a bad job opportunity.

I hate the continuity argument. This guy isn't the QB coach- he's the head coach tasked with winning games. And he's proven over 60 games that he has no ability to win games.

And stop with the nonsense that firing another coach after 2 seasons will put off candidates. Theres only 32 nfl HC jobs and the Giants are still an attractive place. It would take 1 day to find a group of candidates better than this guy.
Continuity
lax counsel : 11/12/2019 11:31 am : link
Only works if there is evidence of winning, or past past success. There is none of that with this current regime. Continuity for sake of continuity is an exercise in futility.

Just a reminder no coach has ever won a super bowl with 2 different teams except Don Shula I think ...... I’d like to see a guy like Matt Rhule from the college ranks for a change
Jones would be fine with a new offense
Rjanyg : 11/12/2019 1:24 pm : link
Part of the reason we are losing is the inability to run the football. Part of that problem is personnel but a huge part of that problem is the formation and play calling. Jones is doing well with no running game and dropping back over 30 times a game. Imagine if we were committed to the run game with a running formation with Jones under center. Jones is throwing into the tightest passing windows in the whole league. If we actually showed a run look and play action passed more he would have great success because of his accuracy. The thread of the run opens up the passing game.

Committing to the run would also help our O Line. I formation runs will help Barkley too.

This constant spread shotgun is not a good thing especially with the defense playing 8 in the box. We need to audible to pass. We need to change the formation.

Shurmur is ramming his offense down our throats and while they have has some success throwing, we would have more wins if we could run the ball, which Shurmur looks like he doesn't want to try.

Jones will be fine with a new offense and a new head coach. No reason to keep Shurmur.
