Is there a place for Coughlin with the Giants?

DC Gmen Fan : 11/12/2019 10:15 am
Read an article that TC may be released in JAX after this season, and that he still wants to stay in football.

Would the Giants offer him a return to a position in the senior management level, and if so, would he take it or is there too much bad blood still?

What contributions if any could TC make for the Giants?

Knowing Mara's value on "sentimentality" this is probably the type of move that he would make, but I just don't see TC wanting to come back unless he was given a lot of control of personnel and coaches.

Thoughts?
he's 73 years old and hasn't exactly lit it up in Jax
Greg from LI : 11/12/2019 10:18 am : link
Why do we want him? Sentimental value only?
I can see him in the front office as a kind of advisor/consultant. I
Ira : 11/12/2019 10:20 am : link
can also see Eli in a role like that.

I would say TC has a pretty good track record of turning teams around. JAX (1st time), NYG, JAX (2nd time).

Just seems like a Mara-esque type move. But what would Coughlin bring to the table and in what capacity?
love TC but..
richinpa : 11/12/2019 10:21 am : link
we already have a dinosaur in Dinosaur Dave G in place so another old school guy is not what this franchise needs

time to move on from the past

2011 and 2007 is a long time ago in football years
I think that would be a very bad mistake
Oscar : 11/12/2019 10:23 am : link
This franchise needs a fresh start, have to stop prioritizing nostalgia and familiarity. Coughlin should retire and go spend time with his family, but if he wants to stay in football I hope he finds work elsewhere. He just left the Giants twenty minutes ago, they don’t need him back now.

Jax second time?? What?
Greg from LI : 11/12/2019 10:23 am : link
How has he turned them around? They were 5-11 last year and 4-5 this year.
Wouldn't this hire
Drewcon40 : 11/12/2019 10:23 am : link
signal what has been frustrating us about Mara? That he is too loyal and continually brings in the same people?

I also love TC as well but I'd prefer a fresh set of eyes on this mess.
they'll have to clear it with
NoPeanutz : 11/12/2019 10:24 am : link
Coach Bellichek.
You just don't let football minds like that out of the building.
Britt in VA : 11/12/2019 10:24 am : link
Should have never happened in the first place. I'd have him on in a similar role to what he was in Jax. Not GM, but President of Football Operations or something.
We need someone to take that type of role
Biteymax22 : 11/12/2019 10:24 am : link
But I don't think Coughlin's the guy. He didn't leave on great terms and the bridge may have been burned. He's also in his 70's and has to be looking at retiring soon, though I'd say the same about Gettleman.

Weren't they in the AFCCC 2 years ago after a series of dismal seasons?

This is my thought as well. Time to figure out the future. Don't go back to the old guard at this point.
I'm thinking Coughlin at 73 is probably mentally and physically in

Yes, they were. What exactly were his contributions to that team? No one's quite sure, despite Shad Khan giving him tongue baths. What have the Jaguars done since then?

You make a fair point. I don't know if they'd be better off had Foles not been injured or not, but as Britt stated he still is a proven winner with good football acumen. Much better than it seems what we have now.

but it would also most likely mean a complete turnover of both the front office and coaching staff; yet again. As for the lack of results in Jacksonville, it's not like that team lacks for talent. So I put their failures on the coaching staff.
Move forward
TyreeHelmet : 11/12/2019 10:31 am : link
and move on from the past. It would do this franchise alot of good to hire someone from the outside without Giant ties to turn things around.

Hmmm, that's interesting-when the Jags made the AFC title game, the Coughlin Excuse Brigade was telling me what a brilliant hire Coughlin made with his Syracuse buddy Doug Marrone.
The biggest problem with the Giant org
Section331 : 11/12/2019 10:34 am : link
is its insistence on bringing in alumni, coaches and execs they know. They need to break out of that mold and bring in new blood. A 73 yr old TC ain't that.

No offense Oscar, but telling a man what he should do with his life is pretty dam presumptuous.

Don’t want him back with the Giants, got it, kind of agree. But Coughlin seems to be a high energy person, Why don’t we let him decide when it s time to move on from what he loves.
People realize TC had a massive role in player selection here, right?

NO! He is not a long term solution.

I think we need to move on from the same ole same old. This downward trend for the Giants started when he was still here and continues as we have our 3rd coach. I think its time to move on and start fresh.
Well, Brett, they used to know that
Greg from LI : 11/12/2019 10:49 am : link
But then they chose to forget.

I can remember how Gene and others would crow about how one of the reasons Coughlin was better than Fassel was because of his indispensable input into scouting. Just look at how their drafting improved after 2002!

Funny, I stopped hearing that chatter after 2012.
Yes
Lines of Scrimmage : 11/12/2019 10:50 am : link
I would be in favor him or someone else who has a few championships on his resume and understands the importance of controlling the lines of scrimmage.

The biggest reason would be to have someone that keeps John Mara out of decisions and gets him to just pay the checks and can accept being just informed of decisions and not for approval.

Sure. And if he doesn't work out
Mike from Ohio : 11/12/2019 10:53 am : link
we can bring Accorsi back in as the GM. Maybe Jim Fassel still wants to coach? Is someone putting in calls to Bill Parcells?

I do hope Coughlin comes back. I'd love to see him inducted into the Ring of Honor. Then someone should take him to a nice dinner and then to the airport the next morning.

You honestly think Dave is calling all the shots? Seriously? As for TC, three times Jacksonville has been to a AFC Championship game guess who was present? You may not respect him but that fan-base was thrilled with him coming back. They actually have a lot of nice pieces. If they get good production from Foles they may make a run.
He helped pick the groceries with Reese and Ross

No one in that fan base is thrilled with Coughlin any more, not after he ran off Jalen Ramsey.

On what basis exactly are you so certain decisions are being made by anyone but Gettleman? And, if so, why would he put up with that?

I believe Mara wanted Eli to finish his contract. Dave tried to assemble the best possible team to support that. It did not go as planned and they are moving forward.

I don't know what TC's futures hold in Jax. I only know he is a winner at all his stops and highly thought of by "The two Bills".

Getting rid of Ramsay will prove to be a good move long term. The salary relief, two first rounders that are getting higher by the week and someone who is going to even a bigger PITA in the future.
Even if he was available and age wasn't a factor, I doubt TC

would come back here. He seemed pretty disgusted with the way things went down. He's like this clown show is keeping Reese, but firing me!? I would have been a big fan of brining him in as GM, making sure we had a strong head of scouting and pro personal in place, and letting him run the show if he were amenable to that. Didn't seem like he would be though, his heart was in coaching.

I never said he was doing a great job as I don't follow them closely. I do know they have drafted some nice players and get rid of a headache. They have a lot of picks next year. I believe the window is only opening up for them if Foles plays well.

Zero facts. Gettleman apologists love Gettleman, and since virtually no one likes John Mara, it's very convenient to simply baldly assert that the bad decisions are all John Mara's fault.
