Interesting stat on BBV

ajr2456 : 11/12/2019 10:42 am
Nate Solder in 26 games: 15 sacks allowed

Ereck Flowers in 46 games: 15 sacks allowed.

Not great.
I Wonder How Many of Nate's Sacks Allowed...

Were with Jones at QB vs. Eli.
just incredible

but I , like most people on BBI, thought it was the right signing at the time. And the pats wanted him back.

Just a bad signing....

There are years worth of film showing him as a decent LT. Decent run blocker, adequate pass protector. That guy hasn't played for the Giants. Don't get it.
OK

I agree Solder has been bad, but he is better than Ereck Flowers regardless of that stat.

The Pats did try to retain him. And yes we for sure overpaid him.

In my mind however, this is more on coaching. Solder was a solid player until his son got sick. He played like crap after the initial diagnosis and then he leveled off and played well the rest of his last year with the Pats.

I'm not a fan of Hal Hunter.
That's WAY more about Eli getting rid of the ball immediately

than the skill level of the two players mentioned.

For a guy who has been in the league as long as Solder, I don't think we can blame the coach.

Solder's 7 sacks with Eli last year were more than Flowers gave up in a year.

Has nothing to do with Eli getting the ball out quick, he's just been bad.
To my eyeball test Solder is at least a bit better than Flowers was,
BlueLou'sBack : 11/12/2019 11:04 am : link
because when beat he's often getting outmuscled or shoved aside or whatever but at least he makes contact with the guy he's trying to block.

Flowers far too often "ole'ed" his opponent, and was so slow getting out of his stance or taking a lateral step, he didn't even TOUCH the guy he was supposed to block.

That's something, albeit a small something

To be fair, they played in different offenses. Do you have access to Eli's "Time To Throw" numbers?

The Patriots knew what kind of player they had and could design their offense to enhance his strengths and decrease his weaknesses if overexposed. This is being highlighted this year by the fact that Marshall Newhouse (yes, him) is starting for them at left tackle.

They valued him a certain price number. The Giants paid more.

How many former Patriots o-lineman have gone on to success elsewhere? Can we even name them?

The whole thing should have been "Buyer Beware" to start with.

The idea of "who else were you going to get?" is not a good argument. After Solder leaves, they trade for Trent Brown, who the 49ers found expendable, and he grew into a good player for them, leaves to get paid by the Raiders, and has continued to play well.

I guess the Giants didn't want to (or can't) take the time to invest and develop. It had to be "ready made" because the team is incapable of doing the full research and finding a player that could be a little green and coaching them up.

What nobody is discussing

Is the negative impact solder has had on Hernandez development. You think your vet left tackle would assist a young guard. It appears that he’s hindering the development of Hernandez and the revolving door at center doesn’t help either. We are a total mess. 2 hold overs for next year are the guards. Our starting center is playing for temple right now. People should check it out. Give me Thomas round 1 and Hennessy round 2.

I think you are agreeing with me. We overpaid for him, he's better than Flowers, and our coaching is exposing him (and the whole OL. For that matter the whole offense). I am very down on this whole coaching staff.

Yes Flowers would have helped develop WH.....just as soon as he finishes developing himself. Did NS know part of his job is to make sure you coach your teamates correctly?

Nobody is saying that. And nobody is saying that Flowers is better than Solder, just that he hasn't been better than Flowers

Nate Solder was coached to the max to go from benchwarmer as a rookie to decent in year 4. Giants mistake was that they thought that improvement could be attributed to Solder rather than the Patriots.

Rewatch his few plays in Superbowl 49. He got abused on almost every play he was in...

I agree with "he was coached to the max." But I disagree on him getting abused every play in SB 49. I mean they were facing a pretty good defense, And they did win... lol.

He took over for Matt Light in 2012 after he retired. He was a solid if unspectacular tackle. But he was way better (or at least more consistent) for the Patriots. I fully believe we have more of a coaching or a combination of style and coaching working against us here. This line should be playing better than it is, I fully believe that.

Sadly, when you adjust for salary, Flowers was about the same
jcn56 : 11/12/2019 4:56 pm : link
or better than Solder.

The scary part - and stop me if you've heard this before - as a rookie starting at OLT (a difficult spot to pick up from day 1), Flowers did better then regressed starting in year 2.

Does that sound familiar?

Of all the moves that must be made for this team, and we know almost all of them won't be made for many inexplicable reasons, Hal Hunter has to go. It's was a perplexing hire to start and there is nothing to suggest he's been doing a quality job since.

If even Hunter is brought back next year it tells you just how upside down this organization is...
