I’m still in disbelief about the Eric Smith story posted yesterday — for those that didn’t see it, Smith stated he’s received zero OT reps since signing on September 1. Even when Remmers went down, thus leaving him one injury away from playing time, he only practiced as a TE (for use in jumbo sets).
We all spend so much rooting for the franchise, thinking they are doing everything possible as highly paid professionals, and they put in a guy who had NEVER PLAYED AN NFL SNAP to protect our QB’s blind side with ZERO PREPARATION.
Think about where you work, and what you do for a leaving. Would you ever allow a colleague/worker to do anything of any significance without any preparation?
When you hear this story and then think of how successful teams rally to prepare their players to, using Belichick speak, “Do their Jobs” it’s just ....
I’m not even sure the word. It’s just a sad moment in time for Big Blue.
The NFL is this highly competitive, cutthroat world, and Eric Smith admitted he had no idea he was in line to play until the actual moment they called for him to grab his helmet? I think this story the THE emblematic story of the Shurmur Regime.
This has to be some sort of hallucination I'm having. TC's pinky could out-coach Shurmdog
In the NFL, once the regular season starts, backups get zero practice reps. Zero.
The Giants are no different than any other team.

Did you say zero?

What about telling guys who’ve never played an NFL snap that they are one injury away from playing? Smith literally said he had no idea he might play until they called for him. Is that standard protocol too?

I see his point, being that teams can only dress a certain amount of players per game, and with all the injuries, I'm sure the Giants are not the first team this has happened to.

The Giants are no different than any other team.
This is not true.

Yes. Players are frequently led to believe one thing during the week only to have the coaches change their minds as they get closer to game day, or even on game day itself. Happens all the time. It's the player's job to be ready.
Eric Smith was claimed off waivers on September 1. Since that day, as with every other healthy player on the roster, he's participated fully in all the team meetings, the meetings with his position group, the classroom work, the film study, the weight room work with the trainers etc... And, he's done hundreds of on-field drills with the other offensive linemen prior to the team periods during practice. But practice reps in preparation for games are reserved for starters and rotational players.
Smith was well prepared for Sunday, he played 54 snaps, and he did an acceptable job.

Hah! Keep up these remarks and I’ll post another unwanted 1,000 word tome on bunker play.
How the fuck does this happen???

According to some, it’s a common thing. That the backup (who PS has never played an NFL snap, didn’t know he was the backup, until he’s literally asked to go into the game. He was 1 injury away from playing .... but didn’t know that ... but that’s normal.
As if...he didn't even recognise him after two years together .
