The Ultimate Best Off-Season Scenario

CMicks3110 : 11/12/2019 3:29 pm
So I am always an optimist and believe that, despite our record, we're not as far away as people think. We have have some very strong core pieces, especially along the defensive line. We head into the off-season with a ton of cap space (and that is relative to other teams too), no major contracts we need to hand out, and high draft picks. So here is my ultimate pie in the sky off-season:

Cuts
ED-Kareem Martin (save $5 mil)
S-Antoine Bethea (save $2 mil)

Restructure
LB-Alec Ogletree (Save $5 mil)

Re-Signings
S/LB-Deone Bucannon 1 year, $1.25 million
WR-Corey Coleman . 1 year, league minimum
DL-Leonard Williams 5 year $70 million

Trades
6th Round Pick to KC for WR-Sammy Watkins (Watkins will need to be cut as KC is at or near the salary cap threshhold, and I think he can be a good deep threat to compliment our current crop of receivers)

Signings
ED-Jadaveon Clowney - with no current star ready for a $100+ million contract, no reason not to go all out on the best player available, even if he doesn't quite live up to his potential, it adds to our potentially explosive defensive line.
S-Devin McCourty - CF from a winning program, local kid who almost signed here a few years ago. Pats are about to end dynasty, seems like a natural fit, and provides some good leadership with more talent than Bethea. Probably could grab him on a 3-4 year deal at $7-8 per

OT-Matt Feiler - Has been stellar as Steelers RT, wouldn't cost a ton since it's one year of success, but looks solid on film. Probably could get him on a 3-4 year deal at around $6 per year.

Draft Trade
Trade 3rd Overall to Miami for 6th overall and pick up a 2nd and 3rd orund pick.

Draft (Rounds 1-4)

1-Andrew Thomas OT, Georgia
2-Dylan Moses - LB, Alabama
2-Jared Pinkney TE-Vanderbilt
3-Jake Hanson - C, Oregon
3-Justin Jefferson WR - LSU
4-Jeff Gladney - CB, TCU

2020 LIneup

QB-Jones
RB-Barkley, Gallman
WR-Shepard, Watkins, Tate, Slayton, Coleman
TE-Engram, Pinkney
OT-Solder, Thomas, Gates
OG-Hernandez, Zeitler
OC-Hanson

DL-Williams, Lawerence, Hill, Tomlinson
ED-Clowney, Carter, Ximies
LB-Moses, Ogletree, Connelly, Bucannon
S-McCourty, Peppers
CB-Jenkins, Beal, Baker, Ballentine, Gladney

That's a pretty solid team IMO

Not that much different than current roster

Won't matter if this

Giants are the most fun when it's all theoretical
Awful

Sammy Watkins is injury prone and is not the kind of player that the Giants need. He's too one-dimensional and for his skillset, you don't commit any significant money to him. They can draft a receiver and be better off. The one guy I would commit some money to at the position is A.J. Green, assuming he gets healthy. He really could help Jones as a bridge to the young WRs.

Similarly, draft an Edge. You could make the argument that they could draft an Edge AND sign one, and I won't argue with that. But Clowney isn't getting loose. The Seahawks traded a 1st for him, they aren't letting him walk.

Compensation is too light for the trade down, but the trade also doesn't make sense, especially when Miami could be picking before us. If a team is trading up for a early first round QB, they pay a premium.

The McCourty signing would be strong but I think he's going to sign for more money than that.

I thought the Seahawks got Clowney for a 3rd round pick and maybe another pick. I don't thin ka 1st round pick was involved.

There’s a lot that needs to change especially the DC if not the HC ...
Spider56 : 11/12/2019 4:36 pm : link
But you’ll start 2 rookie OL, Engram at TE, no FB and expect us to run better ??? And you’ll keep Oglethorpe ? I do like the adds, but we need more.
True free safety Kevin Byard (turns 26 in August)
Danny Dimes : 11/12/2019 4:47 pm : link
We desperately need a legit free safety

Seahawks traded a 3rd round pick not a first, their not as dumb as Gentlemen and get actual value for their 3rd
Devin McCourty will be 33 next season. He's a great player, but we
Ira : 11/12/2019 5:14 pm : link
need a younger free safety to pair with Peppers.

God I love the irony of this post. Thanks for the laugh.
Best case scenario
Breeze_94 : 11/12/2019 9:11 pm : link
is Chase Young ends up a Giant. The rest will fall into place. Just get good players, that's what matters the most. This likely isn't something that can be completely fixed in one offseason.

The moves I'd make
Breeze_94 : 11/12/2019 9:21 pm : link
cut Ogletree, Martin, Bethea

Re-Sign:
Coleman (cheap prove it deal)
Williams (4 yrs, 48 mil)

FA Signings:
RT Jack Conklin
C/G Graham Glasgow
LB Shaq Thompson
S Anthony Harris

Draft
R1: EDGE Chase Young
R2: Best OT Avail
